Using my glass cooktop again to make reflections.....this is actually a color shot...just wasn't any color around!
These pretty silver beads have found a new life with me....
They're from a yard sale and cost a dollar, and I wear them a LOT.
As I was trying out the new Nikon 50 f1.2S lens on a few subjects, a wild King Parrot landed in our franginpani tree out the back. He sometimes visits, mostly in spring mostly with his mate and we can sometimes feed them some seed if we are careful. I haven't seen the female for a few days, but we are speculating that she is possibly on the nest as it spring here in Austalia. The male, and female for that matter, have both been very keen to get food, so we are thinking that they are feeding young and are thus a little more bold and not so concerned with us. I took a tray of seed out and put it down in the usual spot, but he flew into the house and landed on my grandsons toy kitchen cooktop! What an opportunity to try out the lens! After I took a few shots, I had to then get the tray of seed and get him to jump on it and then very carefully take him outside whilst on the tray feeding! I did it this way as if we tried to shoo him out, he may have flown into a window and that would have been disasterous.
Anyway, I am really chuffed at being able to interact with these beautiful birds. I love these birds.

Cooking can be a fun and satisfying hobby. I generally cook soups in the winter and stirfry in the summer. Most serious cooks prefer gas burners because they react faster than electric burners. This is a portion of a burner on a propane cooktop. HMM
this macro was a happy accident.... cayenne pepper accidentally spilled on the cooktop while making dinner... cayenne, it turns out, is quite photogenic

I got a new toy: An ultrafast f/0.75 vintage X-ray lens, the Rodenstock XR-Heligon 50mm f/0.75. This lens was used for X-ray machines before the digital area. The flange focal distance is less than 10 mm, e.g. too short for Sony E-mount, which has 18 mm. I adapted (aka abused) a Leica L39 to E-mount adapter for this X-ray lens. I gained 5 mm by placing the lens inside the E-mount, resulting in a 13 mm flange focal distance. Close enough, but not to the point where I can focus to infinity. With this setup the focus distance is about 32 cm. So this lens has a fixed focus distance, and is always fully open. Ready for some test shots!
I walked around the home for scenes to capture. This one is a coil of the cooktop. As you can see, the center is reasonably sharp, and the outside is blurry and has some interesting lens flairs. The depth of field is very shallow at about 8 mm.

I processed a balanced and a photographic HDR photo from a RAW exposure, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

Our mystery machine, camping next to the Watauga River in Elizabethton Tennessee.
This is our transportation for this wonderful road trip, a 2024 Entegra Ethos 20T Class B van.

With 2 twin beds, cooktop, microwave, AC, heater, refrigerator, and a wet bath shower/toilet combo in the back it's all we need to get out and see all the wonders of the USA.
She's not like a class A or class C RV, it's meant for you to live outside the RV and enjoy your surroundings. We look at it like a hotel room, not a place to live but a place to take a shower and put your head down after you've spent the day exploring.
We found this spot down on the Watauga River in Elizabethton, Tennessee. Not a place that's on anyone's travel bucket list although it should be. Very quiet, peaceful, and a real pretty place altogether!
Macro Monday: #HotOrCold
Hot, obviously. Burning Down The House hot, actually. Well, almost. You all know this one moment, it's the day you can finally set off for your holidays, and about 100 km / 60 miles from home (or 10,000 km / 6,000 miles up in the air, depending on whether you're travelling by car, train or plane - please tick and fill in as appropriate), you suddenly ask yourself: "Did I turn off the iron and the stove?!!!?". Panic arises...
Actually, my idea was to catch gloriously evaporating water splashes as well, but I had to get really close to the cooktop (almost as close as the lens allows), and even though I'd kept an extra cm / inch or two as safety distance, it felt too close for (camera-)comfort. So this is really a very quick snap with only a hint of one water droplet evaporating (that weird white spectre). I set-up the camera, set the focus, switched on the stove, waited a few seconds until the cooktop was sizzling hot, splashed some water (almost all of it out of the frame) with my right hand and pressed the shutter button / remote shutter with my left hand. This had to do.

Zu der meine Kamera bei diesem Foto fast verschmort wäre. Na ja, fast ;-) Ihr kennt sicher diesen Moment: Es ist der Tag, an dem Ihr in den Urlaub startet, und je nach Transportmittel fragt Ihr Euch nach 100 km auf der Autobahn / Schiene oder 10.000 km in der Höhe plötzlich, ob Ihr das Bügeleisen und den Herd auch wirklich ausgeschaltet habt... Panik kommt hoch...
Ein ganz schnelles Foto, weil ich mir die Linse nicht kaputtmachen wollte (nachvollziehbar, oder?). Mein erster Gedanke war es, eine Chilischote mit den Zwischenringen ganz nah ranzuholen, aber der Herd schwirrte mir auch im Kopf herum. Und weil ich Chilies zu offensichtlich für's Thema fand, wurde es das kleine Zündel-Abenteuer am Glaskeramik-Kochfeld. Ich wollte hier nicht zu lange herumprobieren oder zu viele Versuche durchführen, weil man ja doch ziemlich nah rangehen muss und so ein Kochfeld eben auch ziemlich heiß wird. Also wurden es insgesamt nur sechs Aufnahmen (mein neuer Niedrig-Rekord für MM). Ein bisschen mit Wasser herumgespritzt habe ich auch, weil ich mir dramatisch verdampfende Tropfen vorgestellt hatte, aber davon ist so gut wie nichts zu sehen, weil das meiste außerhalb des Bildes gelandet ist und es mir auch alles viel zu heiß und gefährlich war, um den Versuch zu wiederholen ;-)

This is the tile we installed in the back entryway. I laid it out on a template created from big pieces of paper.
It is from the Tile Shop and is called Dusty Gray Pebble Mosiac.
I don't have a photo of it yet, but we coated it with an enhancer which brings out the colors in the stone. The enhancer is also a sealer. We are not 100% happy with how the enhancer worked...it is not completely even, some spots are dull looking. Also, the enhancer did its enhancing on the parts of rock that have "saw blade marks" from being cut in half with a saw. We wish we would have just sealed it so it stayed "dusty gray" or that we had brought the polished version of the rock. We intend to put this same stone behind the cooktop but we will get the polished version.
Blade to clean the ceramic glass cooktop. The handle suffered a bit due to the heat from the hotplate.
Back in November of 2022, Norfolk Southern performed adhesion tests on a pair of Knoxville Locomotive Works units on Starkey Hill, specifically ex Norfolk Southern AC44C6F 8520 and then brand new (and still) one-of-a-kind KLW 4400 AC-T4 rebuild 9530. Running as NS 996, one of those adhesion test trains is seen behind the aforementioned KLWX 9530 as it leads NS R&T Dynamometer Car #32, KLWX 8520, 2 AC44C6M's and 62 PGNX coal loads south over the Electric Road overpass as they grind up Starkey Hill.
At the time, (as far as I knew), rebuilds like the KLWX 9530, sporting Cummins QSK-95 prime movers and tons of other unique technologies like higher speed traction motors and all-new electrical systems, were going to be the next chapter for many EMD products of this generation, but despite extensive testing of the 9530 on CN, UP, and NS, no orders materialized, and the 9530 would be merely just a flash in the railroad pan.
I've been fortunate to have shot some relatively uncommon things over the past decade or so, but I didn't think this would be one of the rarest!

Today we took delivery of a new range with an induction cooktop, replacing our 15-year-old gas model. After all these years of cooking with gas, now I have to learn to cook with magnets. Apart from one aluminum stockpot and an ancient cast iron frying pan with a slightly warped bottom, all our cookware is compatible. But that's not going to stop me from spending lots of time on Le Creuset's website...
