Britanya'lı ressam ve çizimci Henry Cook (1819- 1890 yaklaşık) Londra'da Royal Academy okulunda ve Roma'da eğitim aldı. Doğu'da uzun süre seyahat ettikten sonra Şövalye ünvanını aldı, şiirler yayınladı ve sanatıyla ilgili birçok makale ve kitap yazdı. Özellikle peyzaj resmi ile tarih ve savaş konulu resimde uzmanlaşan Cook'un eserleri 1840 yılından 1855 yılına dek Royal Academy'de sergilenmişti. Ayrıca Cook İtalya seyahatine ilişkin tablolarını içeren kitaplar da yayınladı. Çok nadir bir kitap olan sözkonusu yayın 1852 yılı Nisan ayından 1853 Şubat ayına dek aralıklarla yayınlanmış olup Cook tarafından Lord Henry George Ward'a ithaf edilmişti. Cook, İyon adalarında genel vali olan Lord Henry George Ward ile birlikte eğlenme amacıyla (avcılık) Adriyatik denizini geçip İyon adalarına gelir ve Yunanistan'a uğradıktan sonra Anadolu ve İstanbul'a seyahat eder.
Yolculukları Avusturya'dan başlar. Dalmaçya kıyılarından geçerler, Korfu (Kerkira) ve Kefalonya adalarında gelirler; Patra'dan Korint ve Lutraki'ye devam ederler. Atina'da kalırlar, Nafplion, Argos, Mikene, Tirins, Hydra ve Nemea'yı ziyaret ederler. Nihayet Nisan ayı sonunda İstanbul'a varırlar, ondan sonra İzmir'i ziyaret ederler.
Gravürlerine eşlik eden açıklamalardan başka, Cook, her görüntüye ilişkin olarak o mekânı ne zaman ve nasıl çizdiğine dair bilgiler verir. Tarihî anıtların özdeşleşmesinde bazı yanlışlıklar olmasına karşın Cook, önsözünde de belirttiği gibi "böyle bir eserin insanlara ulaşabilmesi için gereken zahmet, sabır ve direnmeyi çok az kişi kavrayabilir".
