Cook Out (3,078 square feet)

1634 General Booth Boulevard, Dam Neck Crossing, Virginia Beach, VA

Opened in September 2018

The newest purpose-built Cook Out in Hampton Roads is their location in Virginia Beach's Dam Neck Crossing. The building is constructed similarly to other locations of the 2010s with the dining room horizontally spread out across the front end, but it's decidedly smaller than most of the others which were usually 3,600-3,700 square feet in size. It's about the same size as their Norfolk location, but even that one had full-sized restrooms compared to the single occupancy ones here! It's also my first time seeing what was once the newer décor package implemented in one of these purpose-built units, as the previous two I documented with it (Ashland and Glen Allen) were recycled buildings. It seems that the company has gotten to a satisfactory point of expansion in Hampton Roads since no new locations have opened since this one, and they seem to be shifting their attention to new regions like NOVA; a location opened in Manassas last fall with a newer look than what this location has, so hopefully I'll eventually have a chance to check that one out or another with the new look.

While glancing through the Dutch edition of Jamie Oliver's cook book Jamie's Kitchen (2002) for a nice Christmas course, I found one of Invader's mosaics. It is a zoom in version of a space invader at Hoxton Square, London.

Last month, commuters on the Canada Line stopping at City Hall got a first hand look at the creativity and artistic vibrance of Vancouver students. Just above the Canada Line stop, students from Cook Elementary joined other students from Burnaby to perform an eclectic and colourful dance routine for dozens of passers by.

It was all part of the 2012 Vancouver Biennale, which aims to bring dance, music, drama and poetry to the streets to celebrate BC Arts and Culture Week and National Dance Week. This year, an unprecedented line-up of 28 outdoor BIG IDEAS performances over 8 consecutive days included 700 student performers and graduates from the 2012 Vancouver Biennale BIG IDEAS Artist-in-Residence program, The Dance Centre, SFU Contemporary Art, A Star Is/Boogaloo Academy, Youth Street Dance Council and Arts Umbrella.
