The building has changed a little since it was originally built, and even since 1945. Notice the continuous roof line in the current building, and loss of chimney stack on left. The creeping vines are gone, too. There is a lot less vegetation around these old buildings. Not sure why. Perhaps budget cuts. Or just aesthetic preference of the head gardener.

Mount Cook is also called my its Maori name Aoraki which means "Cloud Piercer" here Mount Cook is seen piercing the cloud. It was difficuly to get a good shot of the mountain over the 2 days that I was there due to the cloud which covers the Southern Alps during the majority of the year.

Marc Clark

Bronze statue, 1973

Cook’s Cottage, Fitzroy Gardens (Melway ref. 2G, B4)

Marc Clark was born in London in 1923 and came to Australia in 1962. For the decade to 1973 he was the drawing and sculpture master at Melbourne’s National Gallery Art School, at which time his own practice shifted from figurative painting to sculpture.

In 1973, he was commissioned to create this life-size bronze statue of Captain James Cook for the opening of the Endeavour Hills housing estate. It was later donated to the City of Melbourne for display near Cook’s Cottage, in Fitzroy Gardens. It was installed in July 1997.
