It really was amazing to see the amount of birds that flocked to the top of what I assume was the old "control" tower for the grainery. This was after the explosion. The sun rise, mixed with the dust was an amazing sight.

Universal Wrecking Corp. ( www.universalwrecking.com )was contracted to perform a very technical interior demolition / equipment salvage project that also included exterior demolition of a tank farm and associated piping, pipe bridges and concrete stantions and pads.

Universal Wrecking Corp (UWC) began by first by performing the interior demolition / fit-out work. The goal was to demolish the interior steel work and mezzanine but salvage all the reactors and associated pumps and motors. UWC is an expert equipment salvage company and carefully started at one end by cutting away the steel work and then cautiously removing the equipment to be salvaged. To accomplish this, UWC utilized skidsteers with demolition attachments as well as laborers with torches in manlifts. A fire watch was constantly mainted. This process of demolition and salvage continued until the entire mezzanine was demolished and all equipment was safely salvaged.

I've always been aware and mildly interested in the Red Road flats, so when I heard they were about to be demolished, well I simply had to go and watch.

With 1000's of people gathered to watch the flat's impending destruction you could feel the sadness in the air as former residents talked wistfully about the exceptional communal spirit in those buildings, and the unenthusiastic response to the new build homes that will replace them.

Apologues for the watermark, I don't usually watermark my pics but you know what the media is like these days...

If you are: the media, a former resident, or just interested I can send you an un-watermarked, larger digital copy (or a limited edition print). Any unauthorized use of these images is strictly forbidden

Crash! The top portion collapses in on the bottom portion.

I had a BLAST down at Steetley in Hartlepool this morning! The long standing but derelict town landmark, Steetley chimney was blown up to make way for a new housing development in the town. Hartlepool Mayor Stuart Drummond, Sirius housing group and lucky raffle winner Dave Fricker pressed the trigger to blast the 230ft chimney. Here is a sequence of shots from the demolition

FP&L's iconic Port Everglades smokestacks, in service since 1960, come down in a controlled demolition at dawn. It took less than a minute to bring down the boilers - seen in the first three images - and the stacks. In their place a new natural gas facility. Yes, it will have stacks. But half the height...and gray.

They're working on bringing down the roof of the Aud. It's slow going, since there's a lot of cleanup to be done after each section goes down.

The previous section was the first one. I didn't learn about it until after it had already happened. That was attended by the Mayor and other dignitaries. This one just had a bunch of spectators. Still, it was pretty awesome seeing this huge strip of roof come crashing down.

...Followed by getting a faceful of aerosolized Aud when the dust cloud engulfed the area. I really, really hope they got all of the asbestos out first.

Just prior to the demolition...

See, here I am wearing, for hilarity purposes, actual nuclear-worker scrubs that were passed out by a lady saying, "We had to wear these every day!" Addionally, note bandanna over mouth. The dust cloud doesn't come through in the photo, but if I were to turn around, my eyes would get full of grit from the demolition.
