Native wiregrass (Aristida stricta) will only produce viable seed if burned during the growing season. Prescribed burns create favorable growing conditions for wiregrass and many other native plants.

A volunteer fireman with the Bard-Endee Fire District uses a drip torch to burn the dry vegetation away from the boundary surrounding Russell's Travel Center in Glenrio, New Mexico this past Sunday evening (4-15-2018) while the high winds that have plagued the southern Plains in recent weeks are briefly calm.

I spent most of the past week making round trips between Oklahoma and Santa Fe, New Mexico hauling a company's drilling trucks to a new school building site. The winds have frequently been fierce and I've had to detour around some of the large grass fires that are now burning in Oklahoma. Rain is forecast for much of the region in the form of showers and perhaps some storms, so there is hope that it will help bring some of these fires under control. On the day of my last load from Devol, OK, it was 97 degrees, 7% humidity and a very stiff wind, conditions that are ideal for the spread of such fires.

Hikers and runners were making detours around the charred areas of the landscape parts of which were still smoldering.

Inspiration: These monster trees, the Giant Sequoias, are from the Mariposa Grove in the southernmost part of Yosemite National Park. Two of its trees are among the 25 largest Giant Sequoias in the world. Visiting the Mariposa Grove is a bit freakish given the controlled burn the park service performs. See the face in the tree? Those are burn areas.

The U.S. Forest Service has proposed to burn North Carolina's Linville Gorge Wilderness Area entire 12,000 acres plus and additional 4,500 adjoining acres 2 - 3 times over the next ten years to "restore" it . The Linville Gorge is one of the few old growth forests remaining in North Carolina and as a Wilderness Area by definition, should not have human intervention.

"Restoring" or "returning" fire to the Gorge is the suggested reason for burning the forest, however a minimum of 4,000 acres of the 12,000 acres of the Gorge has had fire since the year 2000. The upper third of the Gorge is a temperate rain forest with an average of 67" of rain annually. The Gorge is a perfect example of Wilderness at present, why snuff it out? The USFS agenda is driven by large congressional budget allocations for "prescribed" burning and reductions in other budget allocations.

This is more than a 90 degree view, from NNW to ESE.

It's a 15 shot landscape view panorama.

Frankly, I'm amazed my Ps didn't crash trying to work on this.

I had to delete all the original image layers that created the pano for it to save as a tiff.

I should have probably saved it for Sliders Sunday as it has so many adjustment layers and slides.

It has more masks than a Guy Fawkes Day celebration...

This is the controlled, prescribed burn of the Pino fire in the Jemez mountains, part of Santa Fe National Forest.

Lightning had started the fire in early August. The forest service had plans for quite some time to do a controlled burn and since nature had already started the fire, they went ahead with the plan.

Today in ABQ was quite noxious. I can't imagine what pulmonary patients in Santa Fe have been going through.

All my COPD and asthma patients were having a tough time.

Even those without pulmonary problems were complaining of burning eyes and nasal passages.

We're supposed to get rain in the next couple days and I've read in the Journal that the forest service will let the controlled burn die out. They'll decide after the rains whether to do more.

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, California -- The U.S. Army conducted a prescribed burn of more than 400 acres in the northern portion of the Fort Ord National Monument, Oct. 5. The Army's prescribed burns on the former Fort Ord are being conducted as part of the munitions cleanup program. The burn season is limited to summer and fall from July to December of each year. Burns are conducted to both encourage recovery of endangered fire dependent plant species and to facilitate continued munitions clean-up. To learn more about

This Cadet Firefighter must have gotten a great education at this controlled burn!

In pre-modern times, wildfires hit the pine forests every year. Certain plants thrive under such conditions and these plants tend to better support wildlife. Each year my neighbor and I do controlled burning of the underbrush. Liatris is one of the many flowers that seems to thrive under these conditions. The butterflies love it.

A controlled burn removed most of the dead vegetation from this area of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

Only a few months following a prescribed burn, the natural area is lush and wildlife is thriving. Fire helps regenerate the plants that many animals need for food and shelter. Many-flowered grasspink (Calapogon mulltiflorus) needs fire to create bare areas for seed germination during its preferred blooming period (late March to mid-April). Weedy species that invade restoration sites can't survive frequent burning. Prescribed fire plays a vital role in habitat restoration, and it needs to be done frequently to ensure areas managed by the FWC are on track to becoming healthy ecosystems.

Prescribed burns, unlike wildfires, are brief. They generally start in late morning and are over by late afternoon. Skilled teams of experienced professionals conduct burns during optimum weather conditions that limit smoke. They use a variety of specialized equipment, tools and techniques to ensure that the fires are well-managed and safe.
