The Ahwahnee meadow during a controlled burn... #yosemite #california #capturedbybond

I was surprised when I saw this on the hiking trail – cut trees are being burnt with no one around. According to an in-park free shuttle driver, this is called "Controlled Burn", and that park rangers burn excessive and/or sick/dead trees and return their ashes to earth every winter, which is actually necessary to keep the forest healthy. It takes a few days for the woods to burn completely, but as it is done skillfully, a few days before rain, there is no risk of causing forest fires.

This operation is also the part of the beautiful park.

Window from the CONTROLLED BURN the other day.

Last evening the fire department had a controlled burn/training for new cadets. 19* out and Dave was gone for a good seven hours. I rode out for a few hours. One has to salute these men and women for their dedication.

"Controlled burns" are done to remove diseased plants, excessive dry brush that might be tinder for a wildfire, invasive species, or for other control reasons.

Sometimes, they lose "control". A horrible example is a controlled burn in Michigan several years ago, which was done to promote the growth of Jack Pine trees, a necessity to encourage the nesting of endangered Kirtland Warblers. A windstorm spread the fire to the devastation of almost an entire county of Michigan.

This picture shows the product of a controlled burn at Merritt Island NWR. New growth was evident throughout the area, which was probably the desired result, but a very large area was burned off. No one could say if that was the intent.

The weather forecast over the past week was good so we decided to head back to the New Forest for a few days.

Don't be alarmed by the fire, it's actually a practice of controlled burning which takes place in the New Forest between November and March. The burning encourages new growth which is beneficial to a variety of flora and fauna and also helps reduce the risk of wildfires in the summer months. I had a longish lens on (technical term 😉) so wasn't too close to the ponies or the fire but another group of people decided to walk closer. The ponies who generally ignore people came up to them and were trying to nudge them away from the fire. I can't say that was 100% what happened but it definitely seemed to be the case!

Many thanks for all the kind comments and faves on my images. Have a great weekend everyone.

The other night the fire department burned a old farm house. I went out and felt at ease taking these shots being it was a controlled burn. Good training for the new cadets. Here I processed HDR.

Learning from Australia's devastating fires, New Jersey is repeating its program of controlled burning in its precious Pinelands. This will clear out the dense brush and deadwood that has the potential for future wildfires. It is quite shocking to drive by miles of manmade fire, but it was very successful last year. And actually, it’s a practice that was used by New Jersey's Lenape Indians years before the state was settled. And settled we are; apparently this is the most densely populated state in the country. As I keep saying, tho, that's mainly North Jersey +))

The bush around Darwin has been subject to controlled burning at this time of year for millennia. When flying in after dark you can see fiery necklaces glittering all over the landscape. Sunset through the smoke presents quite another spectacle.

On a landscape striped with meadow growth and blackened scars, caused by controlled burns, a Zebra's stripes seem to make more sense. In reality, however, they are unrelated. Controlled burns are part of the ecology of the Serengeti. These burns are used to generate growth of new grasses and suppress the growth of larger plants that might convert grasslands to savannas or woodlands. Within one week of a fire, tender, new grass growth covers extensive meadows, home to numerous herbivores (notice where the zebras are grazing). Humans have been using controlled burns for hundreds and perhaps even thousands of years, but nature has used fire to sculpt the landscape for eternity. Controlled burns also help to mediate the greater problems caused by natural fires, that can burn hotter and more extensive areas. Controversy surrounding controlled burns use will likely continue, blurring the lines between mankind and nature, of which we are an integral part. #iLoveWildlife #iLoveNature #WildlifePhotography in #Tanzania #Nature in #Africa #Zebras #ControlledBurns #DrDADBooks #Canon #WildlifeConservation

A prescribed fire at Big Meadows in Shenandoah National Park, Virginia on April 6, 2021. Prescribed fires (also known as controlled or prescribed burns) are ignited under controlled conditions for various purposes. In this case, this was to stop encroachment of shrubs and small trees into the meadows.

A cluster of young pitch pines in the Albany Pine Bush Preserve. The Preserve periodically sets controlled fires to burn off dead or diseased trees, which provides a beneficial environment for the establishment of new trees while still preserving older healthy trees. Little stands of trees of the same age are therefore common.

Had to put up a picture of my husband last night at the controlled burn. He ran one of the three water tankers back in forth to town and back. Let the new young recruits learn and have the fire training. Dave has been on this department for 49 years. He's seen and done allot. Those are fire embers going over him and not snow.

At the beginning of Dec I saw smoke from a bushfire. I watched the smoke clouds change constantly and snapped a few shots for fun. This image instantly reminded me of a Jolly Laughing Santa Claus. It seems appropriate that Santa would appear in smoke clouds as in Australia, Xmas is in summer.

I wish everyone a very Merry Xmas and a great New Year.

A controlled burn in a near by town. Numerous fire departments came for training.

Burn away the old, to let the new take hold.

Burning is renewal for native prairies here in Illinois. Fire to spur growth might seem counter-intuitive, but it is part of the natural cycle - recycling nutrients into the soil, giving space for new plants to grow, triggering the growth of some types of plants, and importantly, helping to eliminate invasive plants that aren't adapted to natural burns.

Sometimes nature needs a leg up though, and every few years, the Oak Park Park District performs controlled burns (aka prescribed burns) on some of the planned native areas. This is from the burn a few days ago at the Taylor Park wetlands, which you can also see in my previous entry "Not Far From Home"

Here we see one of the fireworkers containing the flames with a water tank and sprayer suppression outfit. The water is often softened with a very small amount of detergent which increases the fire suppression properties two fold. She wears fire resistant, insulated clothing plus a special helmet with face mask to keep the intense heat at bay. They are professionally trained, and the burns are only done in weather conditions that are favorable for controlling the fire.

This image is interesting to me in that nothing is sharp really - the fire and hot ash cause great thermal distortion, creating a swirling, impressionistic effect (no filters!). Additionally, the ash is flying everywhere, giving a texturized appearance to much of the image. The contrast between the raging fire, the billowing smoke, the sharp delineations of the tree limbs, and the dynamic action of the fireworker give nice eye movement, and life to the frame. :)

Fire - a sure sign of Spring!

High of 18* today and winds were a whipping but the guys did a great job getting this house down perfectly. They have done practices all winter and that has benefited the new young fireman. Now they will get this cleaned all up and hopefully not too far in the future they can have a nice fire hall.
