This is NOT a real wildfire. I visited Kissimmee State Park on March 20, 2014. As I was leaving the park, I came across this 'prescribed burn'. At one time they called them "controlled burns" but because the burns so often got out of control, they now call them prescribed burns. Before beginning one of these burns, they take steps to protect their live oak trees because the live oaks take so long to grow to maturity.

With my work I've been on some pretty interesting site visits. Today topped most of them by visiting a controlled burn. It was a very interesting and amazing experiece to watch these pro's in complete control, with a safety first montra. It's pretty amazing work they do to manage the forests. You can learn about controlled burns here - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controlled_burn
While hiking on Saturday, we came across a section of land that was scorched by fire for a prescribed burn. The contrast of the vibrant green foliage against the burnt dead plants was super cool to see and photograph. Hope you enjoy!

Controlled burns are used as part of a natural area management program to restore High Park's Black Oak Savannah. Toronto's rare Black Oak savannah contains prairie plants that grow more vigorously after a fire. The fire preserves and reveals.

controlled burning is well underway, I was suprised to see how much the horses were tucking into the burnt branches, maybe they enjoy the barbeque flavour, maybe they know the charcoal is good for them.
last day off for a while, enjoyed walking for miles, 5 hours worth, passed by several burnt area (controlled burning), the horses are still tucking into the gorse turned to charcoal, I like the way this gentle beauty stood out
Location: On a farm near Durbanville.
Description: When I got home from work yesterday and noticed a huge plume of grey smoke just outside Durbanville, I immediately grabbed my camera and went to investigate! While driving in the general direction of the fire, I realized that it was burning very close to that great big ammonia tank that I photographed a couple of weeks ago… which made me wonder what colour smoke ammonia gives off when it burns!?
I needed to take quite a number of different farm roads to get there, and when I finally parked a few hundred meters from this huge burning field (about 500 meters from the ammonia tank), I noticed a small fire-truck and some firemen standing around smoking… which made me wonder why they bother, don’t they get enough smoke in their lungs as it is?
So I walked over to where they were standing and asked permission to stick my camera into their flames... and that’s exactly what I did!!
Step closer and feel the heat!

Year number two of this great Photography Contest. Jim Watkins introduced Dave and myself to it. Last year was our first year to join in. The eight month duration to take pictures at your assigned privately owned land culminates at a beautiful Art Event at Harvard's Starline Gallery. Last year we had 6 of us from flickr there, it was a ball! I was blessed and won an Honorable Mention this year 2011. I am not particularly good at landscape photography but I am slowly learning how to see and shoot a landscape.*
