M342 is about to knock down the intermediate at 180.2 and is lined clear into Shops. This guy was heavy and the hogger used a bit of sand to get tractiion.

CSX 619 (a GE AC6000CW) leads another CSX locomotive, 3 CN locomotives, and a combination of manifest freight and ethanol empties westbound under the historic Seminary Street arched timber stringer bridge just west of control point East Rockford (mp 85.6). East Rockford is also the interlocking for the Illinois Railway connection from Flag Center IL. This is the CN North Division, Freeport Subdivision. The train is about to cross the Rock River at mp 86. The Seminary Street bridge was built in 1901 and rehabilitated in 2008. It sees a daily traffic count of about 4,000 automobiles and 1 or 2 Hummers.

CSX train Q161 passes under the EAS CP-362. This signal was removed the next morning.

Like I did with Alice (you can find it in her dedicated album.) You may begin to think I like this session and the model. You wouldn't be too wrong.

A westbound CN mixed consist clears the snow melter equipped remote switch at East Rockford (CN M.P. 85.6W). The wye to the right is the southbound Illinois Railway to Davis Junction and Flagg Center. A little further down the main the switch into the huge Joseph Behr scrap metal yard can be seen. The IR services Behr most week nights via this spur and trackage rights on the CN. These two switches replaced the historic IC/CB&Q diamond at this location in early 2012. The tall brick building in the center background is the old Testor's Chemical Company plant which is empty and in poor condition. The old IC West Belt industrial loop tied into the IC main at the rear of this building. The West Belt is gone now. The photo was taken from the historic 1901 Seminary Street timber stringer bridge which was rehabilitated in 2008.

CSX 8739 leads CSX 5478 and IC 3101 westbound through Rockford IL with a unit train of ethanol empties bracketed by a pair of covered hopper cars. Shown here they are passing over the former site of the historic IC/CB&Q diamond and approaching the Illinois Railway wye that replaced it at the East Rockford control point.

A westbound manifest freight with a load of continuous welded rail rolls through the Illinois Railway interlocking at milepost 85.6 west on the CN Freeport Subdivision in Rockford, Illinois. This is also the East Rockford control point on the CN. In the background is Behr Iron & Steel which is serviced week nights by the IR. This was the site of the historic IC/CB&Q diamond for many years. The diamond was once controlled by a manned interlocking tower here. The actual diamond is still at the site tossed aside and overgrown with weeds and grass.

Clear signals at Tower 15 (CP HL120) and the first intermediate signal in the distance beckon a northbound train on UP's Hearne Subdivision in Hearne, TX.

Illinois Railway HLCX (Helm Leasing) 1003 waits patiently on the IR connection as CITX (CIT Group leasing) 3101 pulls a manifest train westbound on the CN Freeport Subdivision. This is the CN East Rockford interlocking and control point at milepost 85.60 west in Rockford, Illinois. Historically this was once the site of the IC/CB&Q diamond which was controlled by a manned tower located at this site. The actual diamond is laying nearby in an outgrowth of weeds where it has been since it was removed from service in 2013.

Line us up dammit!!

Block 4 is the throat of Murray Yard and is the start of the St. Joseph subdivision, which heads northwest to Lincoln, Ne. The CTC also starts here with a handful of pot signals guarding the control point.

Good luck using a grey card here.

This is the new dual direction signal tower at control point Buckbee (M.P. 83.55) on the CN Freeport Subdivision at 20th Street in Rockford Illinois. Just west of this grade crossing is the east end of the recently shortened and improved Buckbee siding. The traffic signal to the right controls the directional flow of single lane roadway traffic beneath the UP (ex-C&NW) railroad bridge.

CN has been upgrading this corridor as part of a $60 million project. Upgrading the Freeport Sub will also help to return Amtrak passenger rail service to the area after an absence of over 30 years. The passenger service project includes the planned construction of a new $12 million multimodal passenger station near the site of the former passenger rail station on South Main Street.

Course d'orientation.

Tower 68 once controlled the west end of Englewood Yard, including here with the junction of the Strang Sub. Although ownership has since transferred to UP, and the tower itself demolished, back in 2013 it was pretty easy to tell the heritage of the area with the abundant searchlights and SP-style signage for the CP and for an old DTC block.

On Easter Sunday NS 9538 and 9470 lead a long manifest train westbound thru Rockford IL on the CN North Division, Freeport Subdivision. Here they pass over the East Rockford interlocking and the wye to the Illinois Railway southbound connection at milepost 85.6 west. They are about to duck beneath the 1901 Seminary Street timber stringer road bridge then cross the Rock River at milepost 86.0.

CN2306 leads CN8862, CN(BCOL)4618, BCOL4616, NS9766, CN5789, and CN2136 westbound pulling an extra long combination manifest freight and ethanol empties consist at the East Rockford control point on a summertime Sunday evening. This is milepost 85.6 west on the CN North Division, Freeport Subdivision west of Chicago. This control point is also the interlocking for the Illinois Railway connection south to Flag Center Illinois and was the former site of the historic Illinois Central/CB&Q diamond. The actual diamond is still lying on the ground just on the other side of the 2306 where it has remained since its removal in early 2012.

This abandoned electronics hut was for the old IC (now CN) and CB&Q (now Illinois Railway) Buckbee diamond at CN milepost 85.6 west on the Freeport Subdivision. The diamond has been replaced by a pair of switches at what is now the East Rockford interlocking and control point. In the distant past the old diamond was controlled by a manned interlocking tower at this location. The 436 Buckbee lettering on the eave of the building appears to be a reference to the street address of the building which is at 436 Buckbee Street..

Less known corners of Central Park

CSX 3090 and CSX 5283 westbound on the CN Freeport Subdivision approaching the East Rockford control point and interlocking at milepost 85.6 west and the Rock River bridge at milepost 86.0. In the foreground is the Illinois Railway wye. In the background is the Behr Iron and Metal wye. This is the former site of the historic IC/CB&Q diamond which was replaced by these two switches.

Crossing the diamond at Control Point Mallin, pushing at the tail of a two mile long consist of coalers.

This North American Tank Line (NATX) car was westbound on CN train 5783-West at CP East Rockford (milepost 85.6west) on the CN Freeport Subdivision on Father's Day 2013. Behr Iron and Metal center cab switcher #502 is visible in the background.

"CP" stands for "control point," which often (usually?) means the location of a track switch.

A 360 degree sunrise panorama from Omaha Beach, Normandie, France. I did 20 or more panoramas that morning. Many of them didn't work out well. Partly due to long shutterspeeds, but mainly because the panorama software (PTGui) had difficulties generating enough controlpoints from the water surface.

I'll try to figure out how to publich this in a rotating manner shortly (I htave done this before, using JAVA and Photovista Panorama software, which unfortunately is discontinued).

But, I haven't tried this using PTGui and Flash player, but I shall give it a try shortly, and post a link ....

CN 8019 provides distributed power on a very long eastbound CN manifest freight and ethanol train through Rockford IL at the Rockford East interlocking on the CN North Division, Freeport Subdivision bringing the total horsepower for this train to 12,700. CN 2713 and IC 1029 are in the lead.

Check it on Black! After a 7 week journey I'm back. Hopefully I can share some beautiful places with my Flickr pals...
