Gluing Basilica windows to a foam and duct-tape armature. The armature should hold them in a nice, regular, pentagonal shape while I fit extra columns and a top to fix them together properly.

All the computing activity happens here, with no dependency on

controlling computer or any part of the robot body. It has heavy duty construction and is easily exchangeable, which is useful for upgrades or replacements.

My first attempt at using a strobe in landscapes, and I think I'm hooked. SB-28 off camera at 1/3 power with 20" exposure to burn in the rest. It was close to total darkness.

Control House at Gatún Locks, Panama Canal, 1965. Each control tower has a model board of the lock system governed by that tower. Note the wraparound deck, where staff often ate lunch. Approaching at the higher level of the canal.

View toward Pumice Valley, Aeolian Buttes, and West Portal from LADWP Mono Craters Tunnel West Control primary survey control point on Mono Craters. This control point lies directly over the tunnel and had a line-of-sight view to the West Portal and a middle control point at the bend in the tunnel.

I love the control room of this old bascule bridge. Apparently the bridge was built in the 1940s, and it looks like the control hasn't been refitted since then...

this is difficult to do. if i lay down what i think is a light tone with the pencil, it will almost always turn darker than i expect. if i really bear down on the pencil and grind out a dark tone, the brush or cotton swab scrapes it out in a really messy way. so to blend anything dark, i kind of loosen up the prismacolor with just a little bit of brushwork, then i rub it into the vellum with a little wadded up paper towel.

using a synthetic sable on these. really, really lightly or it will just scrape the pencil off. another weird thing is that if you're working pretty dark, little bits of prismacolor will flake off and puddle at the end of all your brushstrokes--like watercolor. sometimes you can adjust that dark edge, sometimes you have to use dry paper towel or cotton swab on it.

the whole thing is pretty fucking nerve-wracking. at first i was too impatient, and all i could do was lay in a huge background wash. it really takes some calming down and inner quiet not to get pissed with it, but the zone is pretty nice once you find it.

i think i was too obsessed with just churning out sketch after sketch of crap. it's better to understand these mechanics first and not put the cart before the horse.

not particularly great photos, but interesting as they are filming 'Control' the Ian Curtis story on our road this week. the lead singer of Joy Division lived and died on our road.

Looking across the mouth of the Cooks River over at the old control tower along with the popular planespotting site, The Beach. I was worried that the planes would be a bit too close for me to photograph with my large lens, so I stuck to the Mascot rock jetty. Not to mention walking over to The Beach would've added ten minutes to my walk all the way from Banksia railway station.

The only crisis going on with Elias "DJ Crisis", is which song he's gonna use to rock us with next.
