A guy from San Antonio called me on the phone and asked if I'd be willing to trade a speaker cabinet I had for sale in the Chronicle for a 1969 Ampeg SVT.
I had $200 invested in the cabinet, and gave San Antonio guy $100 cash and the cab for his perfect '69 SVT. That's a total of $300 for a geniune piece of history. (It also sounds like doom on a stick! YEAH!)
Traffic light controlled roadworks has narrowed the road to a less than ideal width.
By adopting the primary position I have asserted my presence. No traffic can pass. I control the following traffic. I am safer. No cars, vans or busses are squeezing past. This is not about getting in the way, slowing other traffic down or any other reason apart from safety. In this case the traffic was not held up due to my presence (and in any case there was nobody behind me anyway when the photo was taken).
Road cycling is a skill.
"What are the primary and secondary riding positions and when should they be used?
The primary riding position is in the centre of the lane. The secondary riding position is about a metre to the left of moving traffic, but not closer than 0.5 metres to the edge of the road (closer would mean no room for manoeuvre in emergencies and also riding over glass and other kinds of road debris)."

The majority of the times that I have encountered a conflict of space it is because I have not adopted the primary position and controlled the traffic. For example: at mini roundabouts, road narrowings, near pedestrian refuges.
From these conflicts one builds up experience.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone starting, re-starting or has been cycling for a while. It is written by John Franklin and is UK specific.

The wheel was a handy little invention and so was the flush toilet but remember those dark days of yesteryear when we actually had to get off our butts and go to the tv to change the channel? yech (I managed to get Flo, from Progressive Insurance in the shot-what are the chances? )

Hace 15 años que tengo esos controles...me vino la nostalgia.
Ya no hacen controles como éste, firme, resistente, e increÃblemente incómodo :P.
The Apollo-Saturn V Museum has a Launch Control Room on display for visitors. Here the visitors to Kennedy Space Center can relive the Apollo 11 launch, by listening to the countdown and watching the various consoles light up as they give their GO to launch.
This Control Unit was also seen at Hartlepool Show back in 1987. The prime mover for this trailer, was usually the Landrover which I enclosed earlier.
Daniel's RV-10 has a great control panel. The screen on the top right is touch-controlled. Nifty, although the Garmin database needs updating - it didn't have Kyneton in it. Fortunately OzRunways did :)
one late night looking at interesting photos on Flikr. goofing around i just decide to snap a shot to see what would turn out. this is what turned out and is one of my favs. (on a side note to the owners of the pics in the background... hope you dont mind that i used them but somehow it seemed fitting)

A steering wheel is a type of steering control used in most modern land vehicles, including all mass-production automobiles. The steering wheel is the part of the steering system that is manipulated by the driver; the rest of the steering system responds to the movements of the steering wheel. This can be through direct mechanical contact in rack and pinion steering, with the assistance of hydraulics in power steering, or in some concept cars and modern production cars such as the Toyota Prius entirely through computer control. To prevent motor vehicle theft, most steering wheels are locked if the ignition key is taken out of the ignition lock.
The first automobiles were steered with a tiller, but Packard introduced the steering wheel on the second car they built, in 1899. Within a decade, the steering wheel had entirely replaced the tiller in automobiles.
Plans are afoot to convert this disused site into a entertainment complex.
People living near the Derbyshire village of Crich are being asked for their views on plans to build a huge waterpark in a nearby derelict quarry. The Crich Quarry hasn't been used for more than a decade, but revised plans could soon see it become a hive of activity for the next few years.
Developers say the Amber Rock Resort project will create jobs for the local economy. During construction, it could create two hundred jobs, and once operational, the site would have a hundred full-time and part-time jobs. But many residents are worried it could all mean more congestion for the area.
The plans include:
a 116-bed hotel
148 straw bale lodges, with seven floating
210 holiday lodges
shops
restaurants
a sports hall
The project is likely to take over 5 years to complete.
68027 231118 York
Just a few weeks to go before the use of the 68's by TPE comes to a premature end and I still needed a couple of them having had 68023 the week before.
So imagine my joy when having seen 68028 out the day before and ending in Scarborough meant it was likely to be out on Saturday.
However the real suprise was 68027 working the early turn out of Manchester having spent the last few days stabled at Longsight.
It worked the 0627 Manchester-York which then worked empties to Scarborough and sat until 1548 when it worked a service to York which I drove to Malton and had it to York.
This was really like the good old days of the 80's with drives after work to get engines in the book. Anyway - Job done!
