Advancing women’s empowerment contributes to national stability, says DSRSG Walpole at International Women’s Day celebration
Baghdad, 07 March 2019 – International Women’s Day was celebrated today at an event organized by the Directorate for the Empowerment of Iraqi Women at the Council of Ministers.
The event, which was supported by UN Women and the International Medical Corps, was attended by senior Iraqi government officials, including the two Deputy Speakers of the Council of Representatives, human rights activists, civil society representatives, the international community and many others.
Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (DSRSG) Alice Walpole addressed the meeting, along with Dr. Mahdi Al-Allaq, Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, who represented the Prime Minister; Dr. Thikra Alwash, Mayor of Baghdad and Chair of the Standing Committee on the Advancement of Women; UN Women’s Representative, Ms. Dina Zorba and UNFPA Representative, Dr. Oluremi Sogunro; as well as the Director-General of the Directorate for the Empowerment of Iraqi Women, Dr. Ibtisam Aziz.
In her remarks, DSRSG Walpole welcomed the upcoming discussions in Parliament on updating the Anti-Domestic Violence Law. “We need to acknowledge that domestic violence diminishes and shames all of society; it is a threat not just to women but to society itself,” she emphasised.
Reflecting on the challenges facing displaced women across Iraq, DSRSG Walpole noted that “They continue to suffer the brutal consequences of the recent conflict”.
“Female-headed households should be prioritised in accessing public services,” she said, and called on the Ministries of Defence and Interior, and the National Operations Command, to “to ensure that secure clearance mechanisms are coordinated among security actors to minimize re-screening of individuals already screened; and to consider removing security clearance requirements for civilians who have not been charged with a criminal or terrorism-related offence, so they do not face obstacles in accessing public services, including civil registries and courts”.
DSRSG Walpole also noted the high unemployment rate amongst young women, which is double that of men. She called on the government to “offer small business grants to female entrepreneurs to help them into the business arena, in particular to women returnees in the liberated areas, and those heading households”.
“Advancing women’s economic empowerment in this way will contribute to the government’s efforts to achieve national stability,” she noted.

The next group of talented, dedicated young men and women and the professionals who lead them in their high caliber performances have achieved not only a State championship title but also a National championship title. They are now the three-time defending state and national champions in US Bands Group 5A after winning the state and national championships in 2013! They have also gone undefeated in three consecutive seasons!
If that isn’t excellent enough, they were also the only high school group to be selected to perform at Super Bowl 48 here in New Jersey this past February. How big of a deal was it for this group to perform at the Media Day and Gameday events for Super Bowl 48? The game was watched by 112.2 million people in the United States, the largest television audience in United States history.

The next group of students are part of the school that was ranked among the best high schools in New Jersey and America by The Washington Post and U.S. News & World Report. This school was ranked Number 11 in New Jersey and Number 613 in America by The Washington Post and Number 30 in New Jersey and Number 836 in America by U.S. News & World Report. In its performance on state assessments, the school attained the rankings of ‘Very High Performing’ in Academic Achievement in a peer comparison and ‘High Performing’ in a statewide comparison, while achieving a ‘High Performing’ ranking in College and Career readiness when compared to its peer schools.

Next, we want to recognize another one of our high schools that was ranked among the best in New Jersey and America by The Washington Post and U.S. News & World Report. This school was ranked Number 1 in New Jersey and Number 34 in America by The Washington Post and Number 11 in New Jersey and Number 221 in America by U.S. News & World Report. This school has a 96% graduation rate with a total enrollment of 769 students and it has attained an impressive 99% proficiency or advanced proficiency on the High School Proficiency Assessment. Lastly, this school was recently identified by the State of New Jersey as ‘Very High Performing’ in the category of Academic Achievement in both peer and statewide comparisons.

Last, but not least, is a school that was one of 59 throughout the country to be nationally recognized as a National Title I Distinguished School for exceptional student achievement in 2013. This designation is awarded in honor of the efforts of schools across the country in making significant improvements for their students. The program has been in place since 1996, highlighting the success of hundreds of schools in the categories of exceptional student performance for two or more consecutive years and closing the achievement gap between students.

Built between 1913 and 1914, the Colonial Revival Gothic Revival-style red brick St. John Parochial School building was built to house the St. John Catholic Church congregation, the third-oldest catholic congregation in Covington, formed in 1854 and originally located at the corner of Worth Street and Leonard Street in Lewisburg. The building, which now houses the Prince of Peace Catholic School, was constructed on Pike Street to house the congregation, including a large auditorium with seating for 600 on the first floor, which temporarily housed church services, classrooms, a pastor's apartment, and rooms for the nuns of the parish convent. In 1922, the rectory was built to the rear of the school in the Flemish Revival style, and features a jerkinhead (clipped gable) roof, two one-story bay windows flanking the central entry, and a gable parapet with a large finial that announces the extensively trimmed door below. Following a successful fundraising campaign, ground was broken for the current church on Pike Street next to the school in 1922, and it was completed and dedicated in 1924. During the early-to-mid-20th Century, as the suburbs to the south and west of the parish continued to grow, it initially saw an increase in attendance, being slowed when St. Agnes Parish was split off and constructed in Fort Wright in 1930. In the 1960s, the parish began to see a decline in attendance at both the church and school, as Catholics left the surrounding neighborhood and moved to the suburbs, leading to the consolidation in 1986 of St. John School with St. Ann School in Botany Hills, Mother of God School in Mutter Gottes, and the St. Boniface School and St. James School in nearby Ludlow, Kentucky, forming the Prince of Peace School, staffed by the Sisters of Notre Dame, whom had ran the St. John School from its inception, as well as teachers who were not nuns. As the demographics of the area continued to shift, St. Ann Church in nearby Botany Hills ceased operating as a parish, and became a mission church of St. John in 1999. The St. John Catholic Parish buildings are contributing structures in the Lewisburg Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

The Meat Co. arrived in the UK back in 2008, opening inside and at the same time as the then brand-new Westfield, in Shepherdâs Bush (and back when Shepherdâs Bush was a bit more... âedgy' than it is now). Designed by New Yorkâs Jorge Castillo, the interior is various well chosen combinations of wooden and fiery tones, dark shades of crimson, amber and rusty orange - which works for me (but does it work for you?). This atmosphere is surprisingly warm and snug for a restaurant that essentially lives inside one of the largest shopping centres in London. Truly an oasis of food and drink amidst all the clothing retailers.
Whatâs The Meat Coâs shtick then? Steakhouse dining, South African perspective. And this is what makes them memorable in a city already so very full of excellent steakhouses. They donât push the South African thing to its logical/illogical limits, however - so whilst you'll find kangaroo on the menu, you wonât see the likes of zebra, wildebeest or crocodile (yet). You might, however, get a biltong aperitif before dinner (and how great is that?!)
Originally founded in 2000 by one of South Africaâs most prolific restauranteurs, Costa Tomazos, Meat Co went international a long time ago. Youâll find them in various parts of our wonderful planet, including the Middle East and Africa. Which is probably the reason they serve a full Halal menu, alongside their regular menu (diners are asked which theyâd like to pick from, before being seated). This seems to be working for them, as, in my recent trip there I saw quite a few Muslims (and Muslim families) dotted about the place. And whilst I am talking about families, this place is surprisingly family friendly, one of the families next to us brought their (well behaved) toddlers to dinner and as far as I can tell everything went just great for them
Like most London steakhouses, this place can get very pricey indeed. Start eyeing up a chateaubriand (£20 per 100g) or Wagyu (they donât even list how much thatâs going to cost on the menuâ¦itâs at âmarket rateâ), and you could soon see your portion of the bill creeping up into the three figures. However, like most fine-wine-and-carnivore oases dotted about the Big Smoke, this is to be EXPECTED (*sigh*) and by God, if you want to burn the money this is a fucking delicious way to do it. And another thong about that menu, it is pretty huge. If youâre the kind of person that spends 15 minutes plus salivatingover steak and meat selections, that can and probably will happen here. The âsteak tasting menuâ is a good bed for the undecided amongst us.
As for the layout of the place, downstairs you shall find the âPuza Barâ - serving bar food and cocktails (I have yet to drink there so I canât tell you if the cocktails or bar food is any good or not). Enter via a giraffe-skin patterned lift or up a stairwell that takes you past a one storey glass fronted wall of (probably) fine wines and you arrive upstairs - the restaurant area proper. Now, this place is a lot bigger than you might expect, and sure makes an impression. Stretching out in front of you is seating for around 260, an open kitchen, more walls of (again, probably) fine wine, an open fire, and the odd chair that resembles a sofa. Despite the size and openness of this floor, there are plenty of little alcoves, cloisters (can I use that word?) and more secluded spots for those who want a little privacy. Thereâs also a private dining area, hidden behind yet another wall of vino (no photos - it was in use by what looked like a large African family so youâll have to use your imagination as to what it looks like in there). All this fine upholestery and fine wine definitely contributes to what is clearly the atmosphere of a high end steakhouse.
Meat Co. also have a few loyalty schemes, the most interesting is the âPlatinum' (invitation only). Platinum gets you 10% off of your bill indefinitely, your very own steak knife (with your name on it and everything). Another good thing to mention is that The Meat Co supports the Nelson Mandela Childrenâs Fund (UK) - a few of their dishes include a donation to this fund which, in words, "is committed to creating a better future for children in South Africa."

Built around the turn of the 20th Century and in the early 20th Century, the larger part of this two-building complex originally housed housed the dance hall and bowling alley for Germania Hall, a large saloon and dance hall that catered to the local German-American community in Covington, which was owned by Joe Jansen, and opened in 1903. The building also housed the Germania Building Association, which was founded in 1882, and building to the north along Russell Street, today under separate ownership, housed the Germania Hall Dance Hall on the second floor and the Germania Hall bowling alley on the first floor. Germania Hall became a target of the anti-German xenophobic mob that terrorized and intimidated German-American citizens of Covington during the lead up to World War I in 1918, with the liquor license of Germania Hall being terminated by Stephens Blakely, the xenophobic and bigoted then-Kenton County Attorney, without due process, four days before the United States entered World War I, with false charges being leveled at Jansen. The charges were eventually dropped and the liquor license was restored, but the disruption to business and the painting of Jansen as pro-German and anti-American ended up dooming Germania Hall to failure, leading to its closure. Blakeley was guilty of multiple crimes while serving as the Kenton County Attorney due to his involvement with the Citizens Patriotic League, a xenophobic mob that terrorized the local German-American community with threats, violence, and intimidation tactics, and Jansen and other victims of the mob never received justice for the crimes committed against them. The smaller building, built a little later, was built to house a machine shop once the two-story section of the building ceased to be utilized as a dance hall, instead becoming a garage. The building features a painted brick exterior with stone lintels, gabled and hipped roofs, and simple, minimal exterior detailing. The addition has a gable parapet on the front facade, a large garage door, and larger window openings, while the older section of the building is two stories tall. The buildings are contributing structures in the Downtown Covington Commercial Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. In 2015, the larger building was rehabilitated for adaptive reuse as the offices of Biologic and Sidis by Hub + Weber Architects, followed by an adaptive reuse project on the smaller building in 2018, becoming the Warehouse at Sidis. Today, having outgrown the building in 2020-2021, Sidis and Biologic have moved to a larger building two blocks to the south, and the building now houses other office tenants.

What is Peace Museum Vienna?
Peace Museum Vienna is a very ambitious and meaningful project located in Vienna, Austria’s capital city. The museum strives to contribute to world peace by educating the public about peace heroes. The museum provides a physical space, which serves as a meeting point for discussions on peace, an exhibition hall, a center for the presentation of movies and documentaries as well as its wonderful peace kitchen events. It is also an educational meeting point and offers information sources for students, teachers, professors, and general visitors. Peace education is the central to both the current and long-term vision of Peace Museum Vienna.
Peace Museum Vienna is also known for its ‘Windows for Peace’, project which is the first World’s Street Peace Museum. As a street museum, it is open twenty four hours a day and charges no admission fees! The ‘Windows for Peace’ are concentrated in and around Stephansplatz in the center of Vienna. The windows are accompanied by posters and brief biographies of Peace Heroes.
PMV is committed to spreading the message of peace through various peace education programs. The target demographic for these programs is school students, who learn about peace through the lives of ‘Peace Heroes’ and how each of these heroes promoted peace in her or his own way – be it at a local or global level.
How are we different?
Peace Museum Vienna is unique in that it exposes its visitors to the lives and struggles of those who have worked for peace. It spreads the word of peace through discussions and encourages all its visitors to think about how peace may be achieved. A visit to PMV raises an individual’s awareness of peace and peace heroes. It is also unique in terms of its approach to teaching peace. The museum brings its visitors and students closer to Peace Heroes’ lives and amplifies their efforts to change people’s lives at a local and international level. We promote a culture of peace through the presentation of the lives of historic and contemporary Peace Heroes. PMV inspires students and visitors.
Why Vienna?
The historical city of Vienna, the capital of Austria, hosted the Viennese Congress of 1814/15, which set in place a new political order in place after the end of the Napoleon Wars. Vienna served as the venue from which an ultimatum against Serbia, the document that triggered off World War I was issued.
Today Vienna is one of the most popular conference sites worldwide, with a beautifully preserved architectural heritage, an abundant cultural life, excellent civic amenities and an open-minded population. Vienna is regularly voted amongst the top three places to live in across the globe. Its geographical location in the heart of Central Europe allows visitors to reach the capitals cities of Prague, Bratislava, Budapest and Zagreb by car or train within three hours or less. The cities of Munich and Venice can be reached in less than five hours.
