During August and September, we observed 4 juvenile Piping Plovers in the same general area of the beach. They were usually in the tire tracks or up in the dunes on the dry sand. Nice images but I prefer my shorebirds in the surf or on the wet sand. It was late in the afternoon with about 90 minutes of light left when we came upon our 4 friends. Were where they? In the tire tracks of course. We had to make a decision. Do we wait and hope that the birds move to the water or continue on our way and hope to find something else to work with. We decided to give them 15 minutes. Boy am I glad we waited. They did indeed head to the water and were outrageously cooperative. They made up for all the hours we patiently waited over the summer. We took tons of images but this was my favorite.

Continuing my long lost pictures of Cuba, again taken on a Kodak compact camera.

I continue to replace images that I posted before with a new version that I like better. Morning Glory is one of my favorite flowers in the garden. I start them from seed and enjoy seeing than blossom. Each stage of the flower is fascinating to photograph.

Continuing my theme of reflections taken on my tour of Skye and the Highlands region this image just had everything. The clouds, boat, trees, the mountains and the small reeds in the foreground just made it, in my mind, complete.

The rains continue to fall. It rained on St Swithin's Day and so we expect another 40 days of it. As each drop of rain falls, I feel my fear and worries rise. I am once again picking our son up from the floor following a seizure induced fall. His new specialist epilepsy neurologist is seeing us soon and I am documenting his current condition in his ‘seizure diary’. It does not make good reading.

I fear how I will convey this crucial information. I can talk about epilepsy and autism as well as his other conditions fluently and with confidence. But this meeting will be about our son. When I talk about the pain and torment our son lives through each day, I am always overcome with emotion.

The diary will help, and it will contain thoughts and questions that I will refer to if I need prompts. I am not expecting anything in particular, we have been trying different things over many years now. But his condition is getting worse. In front of our very eyes, we see the changes.

My fears are as plentiful as the endless raindrops falling outside. I just hope this new neurologist listens to my story and commits to continuing to support us through whatever the future holds …

Continuing the theme of "quirky Indiana", today's feature is this old Impala sitting on the top of a metal tower.

One may ask "why", and I don't have an answer. But this is (or was) part of a menagerie of unusual stuff that included a vintage motel sign, old railroad cars and junk trucks. All located at a train station that was converted into a seafood restaurant. The business has since closed and to my understanding most of this stuff have been removed from the property. I'm not sure if this car is still there or not!

Charlestown, Indiana

UPDATE: Unfortunately this car (and everything else) has been removed from the property as of 10/2021.

The port of Kraten has become the gate of hell

(Tunisia) - The Kerkennah Islands have long been a small paradise whose inhabitants lived off fishing and tourism. But since 2018 paradise has become one of the gates of hell. Migrants wishing to reach Italy use the ports of the small Tunisian archipelago to reach the island of Lampedusa in Italy. Some local fishermen have become smugglers, a lucrative activity in a country severely affected by unemployment.

Others, who for moral reasons, prefer to continue to earn their living with fishing, bring up many corpses in their nets the day after storms.

The photo above was taken in 1996 in the port of Kraten, a blessed time when only the fish were caught in the nets.

This series of photos continues to show my fascination with misty scenes, all four were taken the same morning, but of disparate landscapes.

In this fourth and last image, even though the sun has been up for hours, it has only just cleared the mountain opposite and is finally burning off the last of the mist at Talybont Reservoir, the lake itself is still in shadow.

The distance traveled by car from the first to last shot is about 13 miles (although they are all much, much closer as the crow flies) and took 86 minutes, you just have to love the Brecon Beacons!

I continue to be in awe of the beauty I saw at Ox Bow Bend in Grand Teton National Park. Here is another look at this spectacular place. This image has a wider angle and less zoom than the one I posted several weeks ago. Any way you dice it, this is one of the most beautiful places on earth. Talk about a stress reliever.

He turned to her and began to tell a story of this and that, of pros and cons, of blacks and whites.

She listened for a while then her gaze turned uncontrollably skyward.

"I've never seen the sky like that...It seems to be split, right down the middle..." she said.

There was a brief pause.

Hoverfly on Nightshade

Bittersweet nightshade is a slender perennial vine, found in creeks and wetlands, as well as field edges, gardens, parks, and roadsides. This plant is toxic to people, pets, and livestock, apparently not to Hoverflies or Bumblebees!!

Continuing on the theme of one sparrow a day this week, here is a beautiful Chipping Sparrow spotted near Nutter's Battery, Central Park, New York. They are now coming in increasing numbers...

While many other places in the northern hemisphere are showing signs of warming weather, we continue to demonstrate why it is not the weather that drew us here. No, ironically we came for the jobs.

Framed in my last picture, this shows the trail continuing, hugging the lakeshore. If you look closely you can see a man and his dog.

The Broads are manmade waterways. Along with many other mills, Horsey Mill was built to drain the water to create more farmland. Here are some facts quoted from. www.nationaltrustscones.com/2019/10/horsey-windpump.html?m=1

“Here are some historical facts:

There has been a drainage mill on the site since the early 1700s

There are similar mills dotted all around this part of Norfolk - by draining the land using wind power, landowners could make more area available for farming

Drainage continues today - there's an electric pump doing all the work these days, but if it wasn't there then the area would be flooded:

The area used to be an island used for grazing or keeping horses (hence the name), with one access road that regularly flooded

The current windpump structure was built in 1912 on the foundations of the 19th century mill

Horsey Windpump was working until 1943 when it was struck by lightning

It was acquired by the National Trust and has been restored - its sails were set in motion for the first time in 76 years in May this year, which must have been a great moment

As with all mills, it's not the most accessible property - there are several floors and 61 steps to negotiate to get right to the top, most of which are very narrow (I can report that the young sconepals cared not a jot about this and were scampering up the stairs like squirrels)”

Despite the quarantine, I am still thankful to be able to get outdoors and enjoy the beauty of nature all around me. It is soothing to my soul... I love squirrels, and this adorable critter briefly posed for me in this lovely garden, captivating me with its beauty...

Praying dear friends you are continuing to stay safe and well during these trying times and grateful to those who take the time to view, fave, or comment. It is truly appreciated...

Meanwhile, winter winds slammed Florida, driving wind surfers to don half wet suits.

Continuing with BIF shots with this Brown Pelican coming in for a landing. South Padre Island, Texas.

Some Info From the Cornell Lab:

"Pelicans incubate their eggs with the skin of their feet, essentially standing on the eggs to keep them warm. In the mid-twentieth century the pesticide DDT caused pelicans to lay thinner eggs that cracked under the weight of incubating parents. After nearly disappearing from North America in the 1960s and 1970s, Brown Pelicans made a full comeback thanks to pesticide regulations.

While the Brown Pelican is draining the water from its bill after a dive, gulls often try to steal the fish right out of its pouch—sometimes while perching on the pelican's head. Pelicans themselves are not above stealing fish, as they follow fishing boats and hang around piers for handouts."

Continuing with the C-O-L-D theme...

This image was captured within minutes of yesterday violet-hued picture featuring the 'icebergs'. You can see the same-colored sky here.

At -10 below zero, the water near the shore has frozen and that is the blue and white ice here in the foreground. The darker blue on the horizon are the large waves rolling in the open water.

Fortunately the temperatures have moderated in the last few days and we feel warm at 25 f. :)

Enjoy the cold with me here!

My sparrow journey continues with one of North America's most common sparrows, very friendly, never flying too far, being a slow, methodic mover. I always thought its most prominent feature was a large chest spot....but unless I have the ID wrong, it's not always there! They form groups on migration with other sparrows and I never saw one in south Florida, although infrequently they are reported in the upper part of the state.

PETER and OLEG are on vacation and lost in the woods of Transylvania. BERNUS BARKULA found them and took them to his castle.

BERNUS looks dangerous, but is he ........

PETER and OLEG want to go home, but BB won't let them go. They have discovered an exit in the castle and are trying to escape.

PETER : Look Oleg, we can get out of here.

OLEG: Well seen PETER, we're going to try ...

First OLEG goes outside and then PETER follows.

PETER: What are you standing there, we have to get out of here as soon as possible.

OLEG: We're going back and taking BB.

PETER: But ... but ...

OLEG: We cannot leave him alone. He has saved us and given us shelter. So PETER we are going to ask BB if he will come with us

I think our friends SCOUT and PADDY would have done the same.

PETER: Okay then,

Don't miss the drowned building on the left ... usually people gather by the hundreds just in front of that building so they can share a picnic by the Seine.

Have nice day, my friends !

Continuing the shiny floor series, here is a shot of Nick Whale about to get on track at Silverstone in his Amspeed prepared 1990 BMW M3, sporting the same Auto Trader livery that it had during the 1991 BTCC season.

The BMW M3 was one of the most successful touring cars of the period, winning both the European Touring Car Championship and German Touring Car Championship twice, and having international success as well by winning the first World Touring Car Championship in 1987. In 1988, the BMW M3 took a 1-2 finish at the 24 hours of Nurburgring with drivers Pirro, Ravaglia and Giroix in car 1, and Heger, Grohs and Manthey in car 2.

In 1990, the M3's engine capacity was raised to 2.5ltrs in line with that years rules, and output increased to 340bhp.
