A contingency of Northwestern State University students visit Universitaria Tecnologico Comfenalco and Universidad Libre in Cartagena, Colombia as part of their capstone leadership program.

The Vermont National Guard sent a contingency of five soldiers along with Maj. Gen. Steven Cray, adjutant general, Vermont National Guard, to France celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the end of World War I. Each state that had National Guard representation in World War I were invited back to France to celebrate the anniversary. National Guardsmen visited monuments, cemeteries, villages, battle sites, trenches, museums, and attended ceremonies as part of their visit. The Center for Military History provided guides throughout the trip.

A contingency from the Royal Thai Air Force recently visited Travis Air Force Base to see firsthand how the USAF and David Grand Medical Center implements military medical training and manages health care and preventative medicine programs. They also had the opportunity to explore other facets of Travis by touring the Heritage Center, traffic control tower and a static aircraft display. Thailand and the U.S. are committed to strengthening the long-standing relationship and paving the way for continued cooperation between the two air powers. Al Quba Medical Clinic ribbon-cutting.

CONTINGENCY OPERATING SITE MAREZ, Iraq – Adal Ismail, Director of Health for Ninewa province Adal Ismail cuts the ribbon commemorating the official opening of Al Quba Medical Clinic, Feb. 14, 2011. The clinic, funded by the U.S., is the first and only medical clinic in the village. Tom Baker, right, an officer in the Forward Engineering Support Team-Advanced, a part of the Reconstruction Cell at U.S. Division-North, attended the event to witness the completion of the project. Baker worked with local Iraqi government officials to complete the project for approximately 2,400 people who reside in Al Quba.

“The fact that we brought care to people in need makes me feel terrific,” said Baker, a native of Eagle River, Alaska, and the project manager for the clinic.

CONTINGENCY OPERATING SITE WARRIOR, Iraq – Spc. Faith Bedwell, a chaplain assistant with Company C, 101st Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Advise and Assist Task Force, 1st Infantry Division, creates service bulletins at Freedom Chapel, Contingency Operating Site Warrior, May 19, 2011. One characteristic that helps ensure Bedwell’s success as a chaplain assistant is passion, said Staff Sgt. Timothy Seppala, Bedwell’s supervisor and 1st AATF chaplain noncommissioned officer in charge. “Her biggest strength is her personal courage,” said Seppala. “She goes to whatever lengths she must to help others and shows she genuinely cares about Soldiers.”

CONTINGENCY OPERATING LOCATION Q-WEST, Iraq —Iraqi Army Soldiers of 1st Company, 2nd Battalion, 26th Brigade, who just voted in Ninawa Province during the special elections talk with Soldiers of Crusader Troop, 1st Squadron, 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment of the Tennessee Army National Guard headquartered in Henderson, Tenn. These Iraqi Soldiers were permitted to vote along with other security personnel prior to the regular parliamentary elections scheduled for March 7. The Iraqi Army provides a protection force for a pump house on the Tigris River in Ninawa Province, and the 1/278th ACR, who has just recently occupied Q West, will be conducting patrols to that area on a regular basis, even after the completion of the election.
