Poppies, River Gade, Watford (Hertfordshire). 7Artisans manual lens at F1.2.
The image represents a true situation, but it is not the 'full' truth. You can't see the context (or, the environs). In fact, the Poppies were planted as a border to one of the car parks of Cassiobury Park, a scenic tourist location. Just behind, there are cars - plenty of them.

The stunning Somerset countryside deserved better than a simple 4:3 format for this grand working I thought. So this is the result of a stitch of a couple of images. After much flapping about the general cave in of the weather, and rumours of the tour terminating at Bristol TM due to flooding at Flax Bourton, the gallery was pleased to capture this quite unique working in the sun, albeit, a little too head on now that it was one hour behind schedule.
D213 and D345 (40013 and 40145 under TOPS) pass Nynehead working the 1Z40, 06.25 Preston to Plymouth excursion, operated by Locomotive Services Limited. They sounded great on the climb to Whiteball, complete with squeaky horn blowing approaching all the foot crossings here. 30/10/2021
A Walk in the Woods (with a nod to Bill Bryson), can be very fruitful photographically. Not that we just stumbled upon this. This was part of our exploration of Jim Day's property near St. Andrews, NB.
According to the philosopher Zygmunt Bauman, liquid modernity refers to a fluidity that, far from leading us to a "lighter" living, it sends the weight of concreteness away, but doesn't give the counterpart. Where everything is fluid, transitory and without reference, everything "depends on context" and the solid bases to support us are no longer found. In order not to drown, one must learn to discern. Or we'll follow the fate of Sisyphus until the death of everything that exists.
It is said "context is everything". So without context, what do you see? A vertical rock face with deep fissures? Or perhaps, a close-up section of an old tree trunk?
It is, in fact, the latter.

The Plaza de la Constitución is a square located in the Old Part of the city of San Sebastián, in the Basque Country, Spain. In this square, with its arcades as its main characteristic, the city's big parties and events are usually celebrated, such as the tamborrada de San Sebastián or the Santo Tomás day fair. Its central building was, until 1947, consistorial house of the city, being occupied by the facilities of the Municipal Library (1951-2000) and, later, by administrative dependencies of the area of culture of the City council.
Over the space that occupies the current Plaza de la Constitución there was already a square made according to the project of Hercules Torrelli in 1723. The new neoclassical square was built after the fire of the city in the context of the siege of San Sebastian in 1813. Its dimensions are modulated in 20 equal arcs in each one of the greater sides and 9 arcs, equal to the first ones, in the smaller side.
The balconies of the square are numbered, since they served as boxes for bullfighting celebrations held in the square.

I don't know if they have a building inspector in Quadeville, but that electrical wiring does not seem up to code to me, heh heh. It seems that someone has fallen onto hard times here.
So, what's special about Quadeville? Well, they do have a Pentecostal church, and a sign in the window of the chip 'n' poutine shop across the road from this place indicated that they are eager to save our souls.
There is also The Beryl Pit (Quadeville East Mine) owned by a company called Aquarose, where for a fee rock-hounds can look for and collect beryl. Collection permits may be purchased at Quadeville's MacEwen gas station where they will also give you directions to The Pit. - www.mindat.org/loc-6641.html
But, Quadeville's biggest claim to fame is that Al Capone's Canadian hideout is alleged to have been in the area. We did ask for directions, and tried to find it, to no avail, however. Here's a link to the blog of someone who apparently did find it and photographed it for posterity: simpsonecofarms.blogspot.ca/2014/09/al-capone-hideout-in-...
This shot was taken the day after the walk on the mudflats - another glorious summer day this time on Inner Farne.
I wanted to catch a sense of the place as well as the birds in some of my shots. In this one there is the chapel dedicated to St. Cuthbert, a couple of visitors and one of numerous boats that take us to and from the islands as the background. The puffin is still pretty sharp as well. I must admit I do like it when these shots come off - it gives a sense of place with both the birds and us in it, hopefully able to co-exist.

47805 and 47828 head east out of Sheffield station and across Nunnery Mainline Junction on the 1Z25 07:43 Uttoxeter to Appleby Statesman Charter. A bit of a smash and grab this one, walking up to the spot for the shot having seen it leave Sheffield station on the track diagrams. I had heard earlier that another Sheffield photographer was reminded by the police the spot where the shot was taken from wasn't really appropriate and duly moved on. The arches are from Cricket Inn Road, Old Street and Bard Street.
40 Victoria Street was once a brush shop. It featured the full range of brushes, brooms, bagpipe cleaners to chimney brushes. The family is said to have first lived on the top floor, making brushes and brooms in the workshop and selling them in the shop downstairs. Robert Cresser's Brush Shop remained open from 1873 to 2004. This is why the shop holds a special place in the hearts of Edinburgh locals. Although the Harry Potter films were not filmed in this city, Edinburgh has long been associated with the wizarding world. The towering Victoria Street facades remind us of when the 'Wizard of the West Arc' lived in a house nearby before he was executed in 1670 for witchcraft. If we add that J. K. Rowling wrote the very first chapter of Harry Potter in cafes around the city, a few hundred meters from Victoria Street, we can think that we are at the place where it all began. Located on this historic street that bears eerie similarities to Diagon Alley, Museum Context is a magnet for Potterheads who want to journey into the wizarding world of Edinburgh. This world famous store has three levels of magic goods. The building itself is quite small, so only a few muggles and wizards can enter at a time. Brimming with official Harry Potter merchandise and items made by local artisans, the facility offers an immersive experience for its visitors. Curiosities range from plush Hedwigs and Potter pin badges, to chocolate frogs. As you ascend two flights of stairs, the shelves, walls, and ceilings are filled with wands, signs, t-shirts, and even replica Nimbus broomsticks. Adding to the authentic Diagon Alley-esque is the store counter with the age-old national cash register, dating back to the 1800s. It is with regret that we leave this shop to find ourselves fortunately the next moment in Diagon Alley...
Went to the Rideau Canal yesterday. For my non Ottawa contacts, the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is turned into the longest skating rink in the world, measuring from 7.8km long. Thousands take part in skating all, or some portions of it. Two more in the comments, giving my non Ottawa contacts some context to the canal

Europe, Aegean, Greece, Lesvos, Agia Paraskevi, Museum of Industrial Olive-Oil Production, Production hall.
Let's delve into the archives to visit a particularily intersting industrial museum: Lesvos' Museum of Industrial Olive-Oil Production.
From the website of the museum: "The Museum of Industrial Olive-Oil Production of Lesvos presents the industrial phase of olive-oil production in Greece. It focuses on the changes brought about by the introduction of mechanical motion on the process of olive-oil production and approaches the contribution of the region's inhabitants to the production process with sensitivity.
Its objective is to showcase Lesbos' industrial heritage in the sector of olive-oil production and incorporate it into the broader architectural, social and cultural context of the period. The Museum is housed in the old communal olive press of Aghia Paraskevi on the island of Lesvos. The buildings and the mechanical equipment have been restored in an exemplary fashion. Thus, you can observe how the equipment functions and how the factory evolved from steam power to diesel engine operation. At the same time, you will acquaint yourselves with daily life at the «People's Machine». "
As can be seen on the left of the frame is the vintage way of transfer of energy from the first phase of industrialization: a central steam engine that drives the production machinery via shafts and belts.
This number 51 of the Lesbos album.
For Macro Mondays theme 'Pair'.
I generally prefer to tell a photographic story with Brian, in the context of his surroundings, but for this task (as 'Eyes' were specifically mentioned in the theme description) I wanted to get as close as possible to just Brian's eyes/eye stalks.
I made use of a small plastic ruler to act as a 'platform' for Brian. As snails are naturally curious about their surroundings, I placed him on the platform in the back light of the conservatory window, hoping he would stretch his neck and eye stalks down as this would give me the best shot at getting just his eyes. Attempts using my Raynox DCR-250 macro attachment proved to get too close, and with far too shallow a depth of field, so I had to go in as close as possible with only my macro lens. Brian moved surprisingly quickly, so I was lucky to capture both eye stalks in the frame and in good focus - this took a fair number of attempts!
There was no need to check the measurement of the photo to make sure it was within the the MM size limit - I would estimate the distance between the eyes as approximately 2cm, so this would qualify as a 'true' macro and only a slight crop was done to get symmetry of the eye stalks in the frame.
Those of you that find snails to be disgusting, slimy creatures will not care for this photo! But I have come to appreciate their behaviour, comic character and (yes!) grace and beauty. I am apparently in good company with the novelist Patricia Highsmith who bred hundreds of snails in her garden and famously took a handbag to a party filled with lettuce and snails.
No snails were harmed in the making of this photograph.
A Halloween decoration emanates an eerie feeling of omnipresence as it beckons me from the shelf of a discount store. Even in the context of a brightly lit retail environment, full of shoppers and just one aisle away from potato chips, the eyes radiate pure malevolence. In moments like this it all feels directed solely at me. It's almost as if only I can see these things as they truly are, rather than the cheap plastic skull that other shoppers see. My mind always seems to work in this two-track system: interpreting what I actually see versus how things make me feel. There's often a wide gulf separating the two. It's the simultaneous curse and blessing bestowed upon artists. I snapped the picture then hurried on with my shopping. But memories of this moment will linger.

Perspective, in context of vision and visual perception, is the way in which objects appear to the eye based on their spatial attributes; or their dimensions and the position of the eye relative to the objects.
With the context that this Empire Builder detoured from Seattle to Spokane via Portland, they're doing pretty solid schedule wise into Havre at only about 3 hours down. The Milk River wanders north of the tracks through Havre and this was fun spot to see it.
This is taken from behind a run down strip mall on the hill in town and you'd never know this view was there from the highway.
Composing shots of the Natural Bridge at Bryce Canyon National Park can be challenging due to the limitations of the overlook itself. That is, your positions are so limited. Now, after two trips here, I'm finally happy with this one, getting a bit wider view with the bridge arch in its context.

Excerpt from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mills,_Hong_Kong:
The Mills (南豐紗廠), formerly known as Nang Fung Cotton Mills, located at No. 45 Pak Tin Par Street, Chai Wan Kok, Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong, was founded in 1954 by Chen Din Hwa, known as the "King of Cotton Yarn", founder of Nan Fung Group. The total floor area is 24,500 square meters, making it the highest producing textile factory in Hong Kong at the time. Subsequently, Unit 1 to Unit 3 were dismantled after the filming of the fire scene in the 1997 Hong Kong film Lifeline and became the private residential estate Summit Terrace, while Unit 4 to Unit 6 ceased operation in 2008 and were converted into warehouses.
In 2014, Nan Fung Cotton Mills began revitalization works, and after completion of the project on December 6, 2018, it opened with spaces for work, a textile cultural and arts center, retail areas, and recreational spaces.
It has received the Award of New Design in Heritage Contexts of The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation.

This fourth compilation draws on new images, some of which are melded with older ones-sometimes reworked, sometimes not. Extraordinary how viewing a picture not seen for awhile sharpens your perception and opens up opportunities to set them in a fresh context.
One big undertaking at the moment. Reviewing works from 2010 to today. Setting each selected image in a coloured frame. Square format. Destined for frontispieces (books, notebooks, diaries, scrapbooks etc).
