This prominent vantage point and strategic site was quickly recognised by the Normans, who built a huge timber fortress here by 1100 AD. Originally built by Robert de Toeni, (later known as Robert of Stafford),
in the Norman period, Stafford Castle has dominated the local skyline for over 900 years.
In the years shortly after the Norman invasion of 1066, William the Conqueror is believed to have ordered defences to be built against a still hostile and rebellious native community. The fortunes of the castle and its owners, the Stafford family, fluctuated greatly.
An impressive example of the motte and bailey system, Stafford Castle enjoyed mixed fortunes throughout the medieval period. In the 14th century Ralph, a founder member of the Order of the Garter, became the1st Earl of Stafford. He ordered the building of a stone keep on top of the motte in 1347 and the following year was granted a licence to crenellate and so constructed the battlements.
In 1444 Humphrey Stafford was created Duke of Buckingham and the castle entered its heyday. By the early 17th century however the condition of the castle had deteriorated and during the English Civil War the Parliamentary Committee in Stafford ordered it to be demolished.
By the early 17th century, the castle's fortunes waned. During the early part of the Civil War it was defended by the Gallant Lady Isabel but was eventually abandoned and demolished. Extensively rebuilt in the Gothic Revival Style in 1813, the castle fell into ruin through this century. Rebuilt by the Jerningham family in the early 19th Century using the same foundations the keep was again a magnificent four storey structure. However, given over to caretakers and then abandoned again in the 1950s it became derelict once more.
Now after recent restoration work and a programme of archaeological investigation Stafford Castle is considered one of the best surviving examples of Norman earthworks in the country. A programme of archaeological excavations has gradually revealed many of its secrets. Visitors can follow an informative trail of interpretation panels to discover the castle's history. Today, the remains of the castle, together with the surrounding grounds, give visitors a fascinating insight to the 900 year history of this important site.
An inventory taken in 1537 shows how herbs were an important part of daily life at Stafford Castle. They were widely used for their medicinal, aromatic and edible properties. From this detailed inventory, a herb garden was planted in the castle grounds. Great faith was placed in the use of herbs and they still have an important role to play today. This garden has been designed with sixteen beds, each containing herbs related to specific illnesses. As well as being extremely enjoyable to walk around, the herb garden provides a unique insight into living history.
The Security Building is a historic site in downtown Miami, Florida. It is located at 117 Northeast 1st Avenue. On January 4, 1989, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The building has 16 floors with a height of 225 feet (69 m) and was built from 1926 to 1927.
The Dade County Security Company was organized in 1901 and moved to a nearby headquarters in 1923. By the mid-1920s the company needed a larger headquarters. In 1921, the Dade County Security Company had acquired the McKinnon Hotel which occupied a mid-block parcel on Northeast 1st Avenue and renamed it the Security Hotel. Dade Security had considered adding stories atop the hotel but opted in 1925 to raze the hotel and construct a new headquarters on the same site under the direction of architect Robert Greenfield.
Construction on the Security Building began in 1926. The building was known as the Security Building from its opening in 1927 until 1945. Upon opening, the first level and mezzanine were devoted to banking offices. The floors above provided 275 office suites and were reached by four "high speed" elevators.
The Security Building faces west onto NE 1st Avenue. It is located in mid-block with buildings on either side. Those buildings are considerably shorter than the Security Building. The building maintains a zero-foot (0 m) setback, and the entry doors open directly onto the sidewalk. There are no landscape features on the property. The building is composed of a main block parallel to the street, and a second block connected perpendicularly that extends to the east.
With only a 50-foot (15 m) frontage, the architect made a grand statement by creating an almost temple-like base, consisting of the first three stories. Engaged pilasters, that also frame the center bay, articulate the corners creating three distinct bays. Spandrels between the floors are bronze and feature relief ornament. The pilasters carry the entablature, with the name “Security Building” in incised letters. A dentilled molding ornaments the cornice that terminates this division of the building.
The fourth floor begins the transition to the high-rise portion of the building. Stone panels with a similar relief accent the corners and separate the bays. Above the windows of the fourth floor is another projecting element, a stringcourse that is ornamented with a guilloche pattern in relief.
Floors five through 13 continue the three bays with window arrangements that are grouped in pairs on each of the end bays, and are grouped in three in the center bay, emphasizing the importance of the center bay to the entire composition. The windows are a metal casement type.
Security Building (Miami) South and West Facades, top floors with mansard roof and cupola.
The 14th and 15th floors function as the base for the great mansard roof, which terminates the building. To balance the composition, the two floors are treated as if they were one by the use of a round arch at the 15th floor that is carried by the pilasters of the 14th floor, so that the two floors are visually united.
A bracketed cornice separates the building from the roof form that is so decidedly different from roof treatments in Miami during this period. A mansard roof is a double-pitched roof with a steep upper slope. The mansard roof was named for architect Francois Mansart (1598–1666). Mansart worked in the 17th century and introduced the roof form that extended attic space to provide additional usable area. The mansard roof is a character-defining feature of the Second Empire style that was named after Napoleon III, who took on major building projects in Paris during the 18th century.
The mansard roof of the Security Building is clad in copper and terminates in a series of antefixae. A series of arches containing windows and serving as dormers penetrates the roof. Bull's-eye windows are placed between the arched windows. An eight-sided cupola that extends from the center of the roof is fenestrated on each side with a multi-paned arched window. The dome of the cupola also is clad in copper.
The north and south ends of the building are not ornamented. The windows are a metal casement type. The quoining on the corners of the west elevation is repeated in the north and south elevations of the building. The extension to the east is flat-roofed and is terminated by a defined cornice. The majority of the wall surface contains windows that are either square or rectangular in shape. They contain metal casement windows.

A mono fisheye shot taken inside the Majdanek Camp Mausoleum. This concrete 'sarcophagus' contains the remains of thousands of the Camps former occupants........
Designed by Polish sculptor and architect Wiktor Tołkin and completed in 1969 this sits at the opposite end of a monumental axis that cuts right through the middle of the Camp.

From Wikipedia, 'Majdanek or KL Lublin was a Nazi German Extermination camp established on the outskirts of the city of Lublin during the German occupation of Poland in World War II. Although initially purposed for forced labor rather than extermination, the camp was used to kill people on an industrial scale during Operation Reinhard, the German plan to murder all Jews within their own General Government territory of Poland.
The camp, which operated from October 1, 1941 until July 22, 1944, was captured nearly intact, because the rapid advance of the Soviet Red Army during Operation Bagration prevented the SS from destroying most of its infrastructure, but also due to ineptitude of commandant Anton Thernes who failed in his task of removing incriminating evidence of war crimes. Therefore, Majdanek became the first concentration camp discovered by Allied forces.
Also known to the SS as Konzentrationslager Lublin, Majdanek remains the best preserved Nazi concentration camp of the Holocaust.'

Wildlife Areas in Washington often contains remnants of their former lives. Nothing new can be built, no roads can be improved, and even motor vehicles (in most cases) are disallowed. This inclues electric bicycles and ATVs. If you want to experience these places, you'll have to do it on your own power.
This past spring, I did a whole bunch of miles there and while beat all to hell from falling down and lugging a backpack full of large format gear, I loved every moment of it.
I visited again in the autumn, carrying a bit less and doing many fewer miles. I didn't see as much, but it was nice to be back.

Anglesey photos from October: Anglesey's Cambrian Ordovician and Silurian Rocks: Anglesey contains a large area of Ordovician rocks but only smaller tracts of Silurian strata. The Ordovician were not defined until 1879 when Charles Lapworth recognised the geological overlap between the Cambrian and Silurian rocks and named it after an Iron Age tribe, the Ordovices from northwestern Wales. The Ordovician ‘appropriated’ rocks from the upper part of Sedgwick’s Cambrian and the lower part of Murchison’s Silurian. Anglesey’s Ordovician rocks were deposited on the margins of a marine basin, which escaped the intense volcanic activity prominent elsewhere in Wales, particularly in neighbouring Snowdonia. Anglesey contains a large area of Ordovician rocks but only smaller tracts of Silurian strata.
I don’t pretend to understand half of all that but put it here, from the internet, as information for anyone who does. All I thought was what amazing rocks, they were part of a wall, not all the wall just the last part, so must have been brought here to Holyhead for this purpose, I don’t know where from but would love to know so I could go and look.
The Himalayas contain the third-largest deposit of ice and snow in the world, after Antarctica and the Arctic.[15] The Himalayan range encompasses about 15,000 glaciers, which store about 12,000 km3 (3,000 cubic miles) of fresh water.[16] Its glaciers include the Gangotri and Yamunotri (Uttarakhand) and Khumbu glaciers (Mount Everest region), Langtang glacier (Langtang region) and Zemu (Sikkim).
Owing to the mountains' latitude near the Tropic of Cancer, the permanent snow line is among the highest in the world at typically around 5,500 metres (18,000 ft).[17] In contrast, equatorial mountains in New Guinea, the Rwenzoris and Colombia have a snow line some 900 metres (2,950 ft) lower.[18] The higher regions of the Himalayas are snowbound throughout the year, in spite of their proximity to the tropics, and they form the sources of several large perennial rivers, most of which combine into two large river systems:
The western rivers, of which the Indus is the largest, combine into the Indus Basin. The Indus begins in Tibet at the confluence of Sengge and Gar rivers and flows southwest through India and then through Pakistan to the Arabian Sea. It is fed by the Jhelum, the Chenab, the Ravi, the Beas, and the Sutlej rivers, among others.
Most of the other Himalayan rivers drain the Ganges-Brahmaputra Basin. Its main rivers are the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Yamuna, as well as other tributaries. The Brahmaputra originates as the Yarlung Tsangpo River in western Tibet, and flows east through Tibet and west through the plains of Assam. The Ganges and the Brahmaputra meet in Bangladesh, and drain into the Bay of Bengal through the world's largest river delta, the Sunderbans.
“Ice contains no future, just the past, sealed away. As if they're alive, everything in the world is sealed up inside, clear and distinct. Ice can preserve all kinds of things that way - cleanly, clearly. That's the essence of ice, the role it plays.”

I was hunting for photos that contain the star: Judith Hand and realized I had never uploaded this photo from May, 2013.
In the frame are, of course, the Milky Way, Clouds Rest at left,
and Half Dome directly beneath the bushier tree in the lower right.
Judith Hand is my former sister-in-law and we had a star in Scorpio named after her via InternationalStarRegistry.com.
While it's not an official astronomic designation, the registry does allow one to assign names to otherwise unnamed stars.

Isalo is one of Madagascar's most beautiful parks. It contains sculpted buttes, vertical rock walls and, best of all, deep canyon floors shot through with streams, lush vegetation and pools for swimming. All of this changes with the light, culminating in extraordinary sunsets beneath a big sky. Add all this to easy access off the RN7 and you understand why this is Madagascar’s most visited park.
At more than 800 sq km, it’s also a large park, so if you want to go off on your own there is plenty of room for exploration, with everything from two-hour to week-long hikes. There's also an excellent chance of spotting ring-tailed lemurs and Verreaux's sifaka around the Nemaza campsite.

The site contains unusual Inca ruins, mostly consisting of several terraced circular depressions, the largest of which is approximately 30 m (98 ft) deep. As with many other Inca sites, it also has an irrigation system.
The purpose of these depressions is uncertain, but their depth, design, and orientation with respect to wind and sun creates a temperature difference of as much as 15 °C (27 °F) between the top and the bottom.
Here is the continuation of my large summer-2018 project.
I had imaged this region for about 13 nights altogether between July and October 2018. You can call me crazy, using so many nights for just one object, in a region where clear nights are rare :) But I really wanted to see if I could catch this beautiful Supernova remnant, and I'm glad it succeeded :)
Recently Pixinsight was supplied with the new Starnet++ module, which you can use to completely separate the stars from the background. I used this software to enhance the very weak nebulosity and was astonished to see how much more could be drawn from the background compared to the processing I did last year. All other processing was performed using Astropixelprocessor and photoshop.
Supernova remnants (SNR) are formed when a large star ends its life in a supernova explosion. About 300 of these remnants are currently known in our galaxy. One of the most famous remnants, the Veil Nebula, is located in the constellation of Cygnus. Although this is the most famous one in this constellation, it’s not the only SNR. Cygnus contains several obscure SNR’s, among which SNR 65.3+5.7 (also known as SNR 65.2+5.7).
SNR G65.3+5.7 was discovered by Gull et al. (1977) during an OIII survey of the Milky Way. Some parts of this SNR were already catalogued by Stewart Sharpless in his SH2 catalog as SH2-91, SH2-94 and SH2-96, but they were not recognized as being part of a bigger structure at that time. The idea that they could be part of a larger SNR was postulated by Sidney van den Bergh in 1960, but it took until 1977 for this to be confirmed.
This is one of the larger SNR in the sky spanning a region of roughly 4.0x3.3 degrees. Mavromatakis et al. (2002) determined the age of the SNR to be 20.000-25.000 years and the distance about 2.600 – 3.200 lightyears. The shell has a diameter of roughly 230 lightyears! This SNR is a predominantly OIII shell with also some H-alpha signal.
This supernova shell is quite weak and there are hardly any high-resolution images of this region. In the internet maybe 5-10 deep images of this shell can be found and, in most cases, they don’t cover the entire shell or the resolution is quite low because it was done by using photo lenses at short focal lengths. That’s why I decided to see if I could try to image the entire shell using my equipment, a TMB92 refractor in combination with a QSI583ws ccd camera. Because of its large size I needed to make a 3x3 mosaic to cover the whole region.
As so many nights were already necessary to cover the region in OIII I didn’t succeed in grabbing the H-alpha data, but on the internet I found the MDWsurvey (mdwskysurvey.org) initiated by David Mittelman (†), Dennis di Cicco, and Sean Walker (MDW). This is a marvelous project with the goal to image the entire northern sky in H-alpha at a resolution of 3.17”/pixel. I contacted them and told them of my effort to grab imagery of this SNR and they were very kind to provide me with the H-alpha imagery of this region, so that the entire SNR could be brought into view in reasonable high resolution.
This bicolor image shows a combination of about 53h of OIII data (made by myself) and 20 hours of Ha-data (made by the MDW survey) in a single image. In this way the full span of the shell can be seen in all its glory.

1. An elephant trunk contains 40 000 different muscles.
The human body only contains 639! This gives us an idea of the immense complexity of this amazing appendage.
2. The elephant trunk is by far the most versatile appendage on the planet
It is used to breathe, drink, eat, smell, snorkel, communicate - as well as being used as a 'hand' to touch, feel, hold, grab, pull etc.
3. The trunk is both extremely delicate and extremely strong.
The African elephant has two finger-like tips at the end of its trunk that it uses to clasp smaller objects. The trunk is so delicate it is at times used to wipe or clean their eyes. On the other hand, the trunk is an extremely powerful tool that can pull out trees and lift up to 350 kg (770 lb).
4. Elephants are either left or right-handed.
Baby elephants are born not knowing how to use their trunks, much like baby humans are unable to use their arms and hands. They often stumble over their trunks for the first couple of days, but soon their trunks grow considerably and they gain control. Interestingly, elephants show a preference between grasping objects to the left or right, in the same way, that children are left or right-handed.
5. The elephant's sense of smell is estimated to be four times that of a bloodhound and they can smell water from miles away.

The city of Ouagadougou contains a set of three water reservoirs called "Dams 1, 2 and 3" upstream of Bangr-Wéogo Park. They constitute an island of freshness particularly appreciated in the dry and hot season (March-May). The construction of the Ziga dam, approximately 50 kilometres northeast of the capital, to ensure water supply made it possible to better develop the three water reservoirs. Market gardening is carried out on the banks, thus offering short circuits for the supply of vegetables (urban agriculture), just as many spaces have been set up for relaxation under the mango trees, which are taken over on weekends.
It contains the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria, which holds works of Arnolfo di Cambio, Piero della Francesca, Perugino, Pinturicchio and others.

Taizō-in (退蔵院?) is the oldest sub-temple (tatchū (塔頭?)) of the Myōshin-ji Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple, situated in the northwest of Kyoto, Japan. It was founded by Zen priest Muinsoin in 1404. The original temple buildings were burned during the Ōnin War (1467-1477), and were later rebuilt.
Taizō-in is well known for its two gardens. The main garden, Motonobu-no-niwa, is a traditional Japanese dry landscape garden (karesansui), containing several angular rocks suggesting the cliffs of the island of Hōrai, with smaller stones suggesting a stream. The planting is mostly evergreen, including camellia, pine, and Japanese umbrella pine. It covers 50 tsubo (170 m²) and was designed to integrate a borrowing of scenery ("shakkei") of a view of Narabigaoka Hill in the distance. It is thought to be the final work of Muromachi painter Kanō Motonobu (狩野 元信), reproducing one of his paintings in three dimensions.
A new pond garden, or yoko-en, was designed by Kinsaku Nakane in 1963-1966. The new garden is large enough for visitors to walk in, and contains azaleas and a stream that cascades along the main axis, directly toward the main viewing position. The stream flows around rocks, gradually widening until it empties into a pool in front of the viewer. (Wikipedia)
This pretty, cloud-like object may not look much like a galaxy — it lacks the well-defined arms of a spiral galaxy, or the reddish bulge of an elliptical — but it is in fact something known as a lenticular galaxy. Lenticular galaxies sit somewhere between the spiral and elliptical types; they are disc-shaped, like spirals, but they no longer form large numbers of new stars and thus contain only ageing populations of stars, like ellipticals.
NGC 2655’s core is extremely luminous, resulting in its additional classification as a Seyfert galaxy: a type of active galaxy with strong and characteristic emission lines. This luminosity is thought to be produced as matter is dragged onto the accretion disc of a supermassive black hole sitting at the centre of NGC 2655. The structure of NGC 2655’s outer disc, on the other hand, appears calmer, but it is oddly-shaped. The complex dynamics of the gas in the galaxy suggest that it may have had a turbulent past, including mergers and interactions with other galaxies.
NGC 2655 is located about 80 million light-years from Earth in the constellation of Camelopardalis (The Giraffe). Camelopardalis contains many other interesting deep-sky objects, including the open cluster NGC 1502, the elegant Kemble’s Cascade asterism, and the starburst galaxy NGC 2146.

The Egyptian Museum of Antiquities contains many important pieces of ancient Egyptian history. It houses the world’s largest collection of Pharaonic antiquities. The Egyptian government established the museum built in 1835 near the Ezbekeyah Garden and later moved to the Cairo Citadel. In 1855, Archduke Maximilian of Austria was given all of the artifacts by the Egyptian government; these are now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
A new museum was established at Boulaq in 1858 in a former warehouse, following the foundation of the new Antiquities Department under the direction of Auguste Mariette. The building lay on the bank of the Nile River, and in 1878 it suffered significant damage in a flood of the Nile River. In 1891, the collections were moved to a former royal palace, in the Giza district of Cairo. They remained there until 1902 when they were moved, for the last time, to the current museum in Tahrir Square.
This is a 561 ft (171 m) observation tower in Dallas, and one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. A free-standing structure until the construction of an addition to the Hyatt Regency Dallas and surrounding complex in 1998, the tower is the city's 15th tallest occupiable structure. It was designed by architectural firm Welton Becket & Associates. The tower contains three floors with circular floor plans on top of four shafts of poured-in-place concrete. A central cylindrical shaft houses both stairs and mechanical equipment. Three rectangular shafts, featuring elevators, rise parallel to the central shaft. Each shaft's outfacing wall is made up of glass panels, providing tourists views of the city during the 68-second elevator ride to the top.
Medienhafen und Rheinturm, Düsseldorf
The Medienhafen (MediaHarbour) district contains some spectacular post-modern architecture, most famously the three twisted constructions by renowned architect Frank Gehry, Neuer Zollhof. There are also many restaurants, bars, and a few clubs, which make the Hafen a prominent lifestyle district.
The Rheinturm (Rhine Tower) is a 240.5 metre high concrete telecommunications tower in Düsseldorf, capital of the federal state (Bundesland) of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Construction commenced in 1979 and finished in 1981. The Rheinturm carries aerials for directional radio, FM and TV transmitters. It stands 174.5 metres high and houses a revolving restaurant and an observation deck at a height of 170 metres. It is the tallest building in Düsseldorf. (Source: Wikipedia, edited)

Bittersweet Moments. By definition, bittersweet is an emotion containing a mixture of sadness and happiness. That is what I felt as in my on going overhaul and scanning of my slide collection I was wrapping up the drawers containing my Wisconsin Central material.
I worked for the WC for 12 years, and prior to that lived close enough to have shot a fair amount of WC. But then I came to the last drawer containing what I labeled "CN-WC Division." Not really an official name, but just a drawer where I threw the post CN purchase stuff that didn't contain a predominate WC look. I hadn't looked at these slides in quite sometime. Most of it shot between the years 2003 and when we left Wisconsin in 2008. It wasn't the beloved WC, but there were some neat CN-IC shots that were interesting.
So the subject was bittersweet moments. Bittersweet in that I was happy to be done with a major part of my scanning project. But sadness in that Stevens Point was a great place to raise our family, and WC was a great place to work. I dearly miss the people that I worked with - even some of the Packer fans.
Aloe, also written Aloë, is a genus containing over 500 species of flowering succulent plants. The most widely known species is Aloe vera, or "true aloe", so called because it is cultivated as the standard source of so-called "aloe vera" for assorted pharmaceutical purposes. Other species, such as Aloe ferox, also are cultivated or harvested from the wild for similar applications.
orange you glad that,
tho' I contain multitudes,
I smile like this?

Apparently, in my last photo, I looked sad / lonely / scared / et al. I do appreciate the concern and sincerely apologize if my retort came off as rude (it wasn't intended as such, as I imagine your comments were those of concern - not criticism). I am 'alone' on my vacation, but I have always sought solitude and time away from people so I can occasionally clear my head and heart. You may have seen feelings in my eyes and/or demeanor that I'm in denial or unaware of. I'm in a transitional moment -- finding a new home, new job (hopefully), new lots of things. I also am also deeply saddened by my father's condition and the rapid degeneration of his mind and life. I feel this every second, every minute, every hour, every day. I cannot run away from it and have stopped trying to. I love my father as much as anything in the world, so I feel incredibly guilty and angry at my own fear to spend time with him. I do see him and help him often. And it hurts. And I carry this burden daily and it clearly shines through, despite my best attempts to conceal it. I care about you all very much and know that the feelings are mutual. So, contrary to my short-lived comment in earlier response to you, I thank you for your attentiveness and concern, and am happy that you picked something out that I ought not to deny the existence of.
Egg shells contain thousands of pores (examples of which are easily seen here) that allow for the exchange of gases: carbon dioxide is given off, to be replaced by oxygen.

Street cleaners from the Camel Fair pose for a photo as a woman drives past in Pushkar in Rajasthan. Below is a new blog I have written containing more street style photography taken at the Pushkar Camel Fair in Rajasthan. All images on the blog are in black and white shot with the Canon 5D4 and edited in Lightroom. Take a look below, cheers:
This abandoned small two-room building can be found just off the A835 in Elphin in the Scottish Highlands. It features in many photographs of the region, often with the mountain of Suilven featuring in the distance. There was no chance of that when we passed by - those low-lying background clouds above were being driven across the area by a strong wind and were delivering heavy bursts of rain, which restarted just as I took this shot.
We were told that the owners of the bothy, who live just down the road, call it the 'dog house' but a clearer explanation as to why was not available.
Elphin (Scottish Gaelic: Ailbhinn) is a crofting township in Assynt, in the Sutherland area of Highland in Scotland. It lies some 24 km north of Ullapool. The village contains a tearoom, and several bed and breakfasts.
It looks much more cheery and welcoming in colour than it does in monochrome...
i took this a few days ago, right after i dyed my hair teal (which i feel like i was born with, btw).
i dont like this, and i feel like giving up on self portraits. hmmph. picture of kristi from yesterday is so much better in my opinion. i think my colorful style ive fallen into recently is getting out of hand (though this is the exact color palette i had wanted to use, so thats good i guess).

View on Downtown Los Angeles from The Santa Monica Mountains :)
Downtown Los Angeles contains the central business district of Los Angeles. It is also part of Central Los Angeles. Downtown Los Angeles is divided into neighborhoods and districts, some overlapping. Most districts are named for the activities concentrated there now or historically, e.g. the Arts, Civic Center, Fashion, Banking, Theater, Toy, and Jewelry districts. It is the hub for the city's urban rail transit system plus the Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink commuter rail system for Southern California.
Los Angeles and officially the City of Los Angeles, is the most populous city in the state of California and it's the county seat of Los Angeles County, which is the most populous county in the United States. Los Angeles is the second-most populous city in the United States, and is the commercial, financial, and cultural center of the Southern California region. Los Angeles has a Mediterranean climate, an ethnically and culturally diverse population, and a sprawling metropolitan area. The city was founded on 4 September 1781, under Spanish governor Felipe de Neve, on the village of Yaanga. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and became part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. Los Angeles has a diverse economy with a broad range of industries, best known as the home of the Hollywood film industry.

Downtown Los Angeles stanowi centrum sieci miejskich autostrad i systemu metra w Los Angeles.
This county ,also known as Machukha མ་ ཆུ་ཁ་ , contains the source of the Ma chu རྨ་ཆུ་ ( Yellow River),and lies north of the Bayankala watershed. There are a few small Nyingma shrines and monasteries, of which the largest and most influential is Horkor Gon.
Area: 25.263 sq km.
Golok - Sertal and Ngawa
The Bayankala and Amnye Machen ranges of Amdo demarcate the upper reaches of the Headwaters of the Ma chu རྨ་ཆུ་ ( Yellow River), homeland of the Golok; while the Mardzagang range forms a watershed between the Ma chu (Yellow River) and the three main sources of the Gyarong: the Ser chu, Do chu, and Mar chu. This entire region is the domain of independently minded Nomadic peoples who have maintained their distinctive cultural traditions for centuries.
Four of the six counties currently included in the Golok Tibetan Autonomuos Prefecture of Qinghai (Amdo) occupy the valley of the Ma chu ( Yellow River), whereas the other two, Padma and Jigdril along with those of Sertal, Dzamtang and Ngawa, all lie within the gorges and valleys of the Gyarong source rivers. Nowadays the counties of the Golok Tibetan Autonomuos Prefecture are administered from Machen, Sertal from Dartsedo (in the Kandze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture), and the last two from Barkham, within the Ngawa Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan province.
This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image contains a veritable mix of different galaxies, some of which belong to the same larger structure: At the middle of the frame sits the galaxy cluster SDSS J1050+0017. The gigantic mass of this cluster creates the fascinating phenomenon of strong gravitational lensing. The gravity of the cluster bends light coming from behind it in a similar way to how the base of a wine glass bends light. The effects of this lensing can be clearly seen as curved streaks forming a circular shape around the center of the frame. Astronomers can use these distorted galaxies to calculate the mass of the cluster — including the mass of the dark matter within it — and to peer deeper into the universe than otherwise possible. Gravitational lensing not only distorts the views of galaxies, it also enlarges their appearance in the sky and magnifies their light.
