The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes (Greek: Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Ρόδου) is located in the Medieval City of Rhodes. The museum is housed in the monumental edifice that was the hospital of the Knights of Saint John. Construction was begun in 1440 and brought to completion in the time of the Grand Master d'Aubusson (1476-1503). The Museum contains various collections of archaeological artifacts from various parts of Rhodes and the neighbouring islands, including the Statue of the Crouching Aphrodite (1st century BC), which was inspired by a famous prototype work created by the sculptor Doidalsas in the 3rd century BC, and the Pyxis of the Fikellura type (mid-6th century BC).
The museum also holds the Head of Helios, which was featured in 2011 on the album cover of Floral Shoppe by Macintosh Plus, and subsequently became famous for its association with the Vaporwave movement....Wikipedia
Isalo is one of Madagascar's most beautiful parks. It contains sculpted buttes, vertical rock walls and, best of all, deep canyon floors shot through with streams, lush vegetation and pools for swimming. All of this changes with the light, culminating in extraordinary sunsets beneath a big sky. Add all this to easy access off the RN7 and you understand why this is Madagascar’s most visited park.
At more than 800 sq km, it’s also a large park, so if you want to go off on your own there is plenty of room for exploration, with everything from two-hour to week-long hikes. There's also an excellent chance of spotting ring-tailed lemurs and Verreaux's sifaka around the Nemaza campsite.
www.lonelyplanet.com/madagascar/the-desert/attractions/pa...

Having an exquisite symmetry, containing approximately a million Sun like stars, all tied together gravitationally, these objects are often referred to as “astronomical fossils”, because they retain chemical compositions that were found in the time of the origin of their neighbouring galaxy. This image reveals the clusters faint yellow hue, emanated by the predominant volume of older yellow stars, with a scattering of young blue stars that mostly inhabit the centre of the field. Globular clusters have a sorting process, with larger mass stars to the centre and relatively smaller stars sorted to the outer. Studies reveal that stars within the cluster have a circular, spiral orbit, moving in then out of the centre, distance out determined by their mass.
47 Tucanae is the second largest globular cluster in the nights sky, roughly that of a full moon in size, and is located directly adjacent to the Small Magellanic Cloud, not far from the south celestial pole.

The ossuary is a memorial containing the remains of both French and German soldiers who died on the Verdun battlefield. Through small outside windows, the skeletal remains of at least 130,000 unidentified combatants of both nations can be seen filling up alcoves at the lower edge of the building. On the inside of the ossuary building, the ceiling and walls are partly covered by plaques bearing names of French soldiers who died during the Battle of Verdun. A few of the names are from fighting that took place in the area during World War II, as well as for veterans of the Indochina and Algerian Wars. The families of the soldiers that are recognized here by name contributed for those individual plaques.

Established in 1929, the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation was created by Henry Ford as The Edison Institute, a private educational institution, before opening to the public in 1933, initially being owned and operated by the Ford Motor Company. The museum contains exhibits and artifacts that were collected by Henry Ford starting in 1906, when his wealth began to increase substantially due to the success of the Ford Motor Company, with the institutions continuing to collect artifacts and items to this day. The museum is housed in a large structure, designed by Robert O. Derrick, that is quite similar in structure to a warehouse or factory built during the time of construction. Covering approximately 500,000 square feet (50,000 square meters), the building contains a variety of exhibits, mostly focusing on machinery, furnishings, automobiles, and other industrial goods, as well as historic artifacts that represent culturally significant moments in the history of the United States. The museum today is a major tourist attraction within the Detroit Region, and is one of three significant attractions affiliated with the Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, alongside Greenfield Village and the Ford Rouge Complex, all of which are open to tourists and visitors. The museum was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1981.

The exchange building has twice been destroyed by fire and subsequently rebuilt. The present building was designed by Sir William Tite in the 1840s. The site was notably occupied by the Lloyd's insurance market for nearly 150 years. Today, the Royal Exchange contains restaurants and luxury shops.
Traditionally, the steps of the Royal Exchange are the place where certain royal proclamations (such as the dissolution of parliament) are read out by either a herald or a crier. Following the death or abdication of a monarch and the confirmation of the next monarch's accession to the throne by the Accession Council, the Royal Exchange Building is one of the locations where a herald proclaims the new monarch's reign to the public. The Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis) belongs to the genus Branta of black geese, which contains species with largely black plumage, distinguishing them from the grey Anser species.
The Barnacle Goose is a medium-sized goose, 55 - 70 cm long, with a wingspan of 130 - 145 cm and a weight of 1.2 - 2.2 kg. It has a white face and black head, neck, and upper breast. Its belly is white. The wings and its back are silver-gray with black-and-white bars that look like they are shining when the light reflects on it. It flies in packs and long lines, with a noisy chorus of barking or yapping sounds.
Barnacle geese feed on grasses and coastal plants found in salt marshes, grasslands near river estuaries or tidal mud flats.
The wintering population (130.000 birds) in the Netherlands breeds in Arctic Russia and the Baltic.
This picture was taken at the Lauwersmeer, a man-made lake in the north of the Netherlands, on the border of the provinces of Groningen and Friesland. The lake was formed on 1969, when the dike between the bay called Lauwerssea" and the Waddensea was closed. The Lauwersmeer is now one of the famoust birding areas in Western Europe. The area is famous for the huge numbers of birds. During the winter months the Lauwersmeer is famous for the huge numbers of geese. You will see thousands of Barnacle Geese, White Fronted Geese, Greylag Geese and also good numbers of Bean Geese, Brant, Tundra Swan and Whooper Swan.

Portsmouth Harbour contains a number of islands. Whale Island is the home of the HMS Excellent training establishment. Horsea Island is now connected to the mainland due to land reclamation. It is also part of the HMS Excellent establishment. Pewit Island is a small island located in the north western section of Portsmouth Harbour.[3] Closer to the harbour entrance on the Gosport side is Burrow Island, also known as Rat Island.
After docking I had a four hour drive home. with luck I was to get home just after midnight. Unfortunatly due to a bad accident on the motorway, traffic was stopped for over an hour. I hope that the victims of the accident where alright.
Local winters contain days of contrasts. I've posted a foggy day along the riverfront and one of clear blue sky as one crosses the river. The gray foggy days outnumber the days with blue sky, which is why I like to travel during the winter when I can.
Connemara is a region on the Atlantic coast of western County Galway, in the west of Ireland. The area has a strong association with traditional Irish culture and contains much of the Connacht Irish-speaking Gaeltacht, which is a key part of the identity of the region and is the largest Gaeltacht in the country. Historically, Connemara was part of the territory of Iar Connacht (West Connacht). Geographically, it has many mountains (notably the Twelve Bens), peninsulas, coves, islands and small lakes. Connemara National Park is in the northwest. It is mostly rural and its largest settlement is Clifden.
One common definition of the area is that it consists of most of west Galway, that is to say the part of the county west of Lough Corrib and Galway city, contained by Killary Harbour, Galway Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Some more restrictive definitions of Connemara define it as the historical territory of Conmhaícne Mara, i.e. just the far northwest of County Galway, bordering County Mayo. The name is also used to describe the Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking areas) of western County Galway, though it is argued that this too is inaccurate as some of these areas lie outside of the traditional boundary of Connemara. There are arguments about where Connemara ends as it approaches Galway city, which is definitely not in Connemara — some argue for Barna, on the outskirts of Galway City, some for a line from Oughterard to Maam Cross, and then diagonally down to the coast, all within rural lands.
The wider area of what is today known as Connemara was previously a sovereign kingdom known as Iar Connacht, under the kingship of the Ó Flaithbertaigh, until it became part of the English-administered Kingdom of Ireland in the 16th century.
Connemara lies in the territory of Iar Connacht, "West Connacht," within the portion of County Galway west of Lough Corrib, and was traditionally divided into North Connemara and South Connemara. The mountains of the Twelve Bens and the Owenglin River, which flows into the sea at An Clochán / Clifden, marked the boundary between the two parts. Connemara is bounded on the west, south and north by the Atlantic Ocean. In at least some definitions, Connemara's land boundary with the rest of County Galway is marked[citation needed] by the Invermore River otherwise known as Inbhear Mór[3] (which flows into the north of Kilkieran Bay), Loch Oorid (which lies a few kilometres west of Maam Cross) and the western spine of the Maumturks mountains. In the north of the mountains, the boundary meets the sea at Killary, a few kilometres west of Leenaun.
The coast of Connemara is made up of multiple peninsulas. The peninsula of Iorras Ainbhtheach (sometimes corrupted to Iorras Aithneach) in the south is the largest and contains the villages of Carna and Kilkieran. The peninsula of Errismore consists of the area west of the village of Ballyconneely. Errisbeg peninsula lies to the south of the village of Roundstone. The Errislannan peninsula lies just south of the town of Clifden. The peninsulas of Kingstown, Coolacloy, Aughrus, Cleggan and Renvyle are found in the north-west of Connemara. Of the numerous islands off the coast of Connemara, Inishbofin is the largest; other islands include Omey, Inishark, High Island, Friars Island, Feenish and Maínis.
The territory contains the civil parishes of Moyrus, Ballynakill, Omey, Ballindoon and Inishbofin (the last parish was for a time part of the territory of the Clann Uí Mháille, the O Malleys of the territory of Umhall, County Mayo), and the Roman Catholic parishes of Carna, Clifden (Omey and Ballindoon), Ballynakill, Kilcumin (Oughterard and Rosscahill), Roundstone and Inishbofin.
The Ó Cadhla (Kealy) clan were the rulers of Connemara up until the 13th century, when they were displaced by the Ó Flaithbertaighs. The latter had fled into Iar Connacht from Maigh Seola during the Anglo-Norman invasion of Connacht during the early 13th century.
The main town of Connemara is Clifden. The area around the town is rich with megalithic tombs. The famous "Connemara Green marble" is found outcropping along a line between Streamstown and Lissoughter. It was a trade treasure used by the inhabitants of the prehistoric time. It continues to be of great value today. It is available in large dimensional slabs suitable for buildings as well as for smaller pieces of jewellery. It is used for the pendant for the Chief Scout's Award, the highest award in Scouting Ireland.
Connemara was drastically depopulated during the Great Famine in the late 1840s, with the lands of the Anglo-Irish Martin family being greatly affected and the bankrupted landlord being forced to auction off the estate in 1849.
As that year of 1847 had been the worst of several consecutive years of famine, it was to be understood that those missing tenants had abandoned their holdings to crowd into the workhouses or the emigrant ships to the New World, or they were dead; in any case they no longer infested the ground, which was left as a blank canvas on which Capital could paint a fair and profitable landscape.
The first transatlantic flight, piloted by British aviators John Alcock and Arthur Brown, landed in a boggy area near Clifden in 1919.

Lapidaria is a monotypic genus of dwarf succulent plants in the family Aizoaceae. The only species it contains is Lapidaria margaretae, also known as the Karoo rose.
Lapidaria margaretae resembles those genera within the family Aizoaceae to which it is most closely related; namely Lithops, Dinteranthus and Schwantesia. However, while Lithops and Dinteranthus will typically only have one pair of leaves, L. margaretae has two to four pairs of leaves. Each leaf is 1.5–2 cm long and 1 cm wide. Clumps of up to three heads may be formed with age.
The plant is mostly dormant during the hot summer and cold winter, only growing during the spring and autumn, with flowering occurring in the latter, or in early winter. It flowers with a single 5 cm wide yellow flower that can eclipse the plant. This flower contains 6 or 8 sepals, up to around 100 petals and 300–500 stamens. It opens during the day. The flowering might be solitary, or succeeded by up to two others.
This species is native to dry areas (250 mm per year) in southern Namibia, around Warmbad and the Northern Cape areas adjacent to Warmbad in South Africa, at an elevation of 660 to 1,100 metres (2,170 to 3,610 ft) above sea level.
Lapidaria margaretae grows on white quartz plains, in crevices, in red sand or on loose stone. It is usually located on Northeast-facing gentle hill slope in full sun, or under dwarf shrub in a succulent steppe. It often grows near other stone-like succulents, such as Lithops species.
Even though there are no commercial uses for L. margaretae, it is sometimes cultivated as an ornamental plant. They need full bright sunlight throughout the year and will grow at any time when the weather is warm and sunny and water is available. Plants are frost tolerant to −4 °C (25 °F).

Canary Wharf, London
Canary Wharf is a major business district located in Tower Hamlets, London. It is one of the UK's two main financial centres – along with the traditional City of London – and contains many of the Europe's tallest buildings, including the second-tallest in Great Britain, One Canada Square. Around 105,000 people work in Canary Wharf and it is home to the world or European headquarters of numerous major banks, professional services firms and media organisations.
A quiet valley in the rolling hills of Westmeath north of Mullingar contains the small village of Fore. As you leave Castlepollard and turn right off the main road and up the small valley a view of the ruins of a Benedectine Priory rising from the flat valley floor is the first thing to strike you and as you enter the valley the rich archaeological and historical heritage contained within jumps out from every slope and flat field. It is an amazing place which contains the upstanding remains of numerous archaeological features and is associated with St Feichín who founded an Early Christian monastery there around 630 AD. The seven wonders of Fore are connected with St Feichín’s miraculous powers and are listed as;
• The monastery in a bog
• The mill without a race
• The water that flows up hill
• The anchorite in a stone
• The water that won’t boil
• The tree that won’t burn
• The stone raised by St Feichin’s prayers.
The Falkirk Wheel, Falkirk, Scotland, UK.
The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift located in Scotland, UK, connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. Opened in 2002, it is named after the nearby town of Falkirk, which is in central Scotland. The two canals were previously connected by a series of 11 locks, but by the 1930s these had fallen into disrepair, were filled in and the land built upon.
The plan to regenerate the canals of central Scotland to reconnect Glasgow with Edinburgh was led by British Waterways with support and funding from seven local authorities, the Scottish Enterprise Network, the European Regional Development Fund and the Millennium Commission. It was decided to create a dramatic 21st century landmark structure to reconnect the canals, instead of simply recreating the historic lock flight. Designs were submitted for a boat lift to link the canals, with the Falkirk Wheel design winning. As with many Millennium Commission projects, the site includes a visitors' centre containing a shop, café and exhibition centre.
The difference in the levels of the two canals at the wheel is 24 metres (79 ft), roughly equivalent to the height of an eight-storey building. The Union Canal, however, is 11m higher than the aqueduct which meets the wheel, and boats must pass through a pair of locks to descend from this canal onto the aqueduct at the top of the wheel. The aqueduct could not have been positioned higher due to conflicts with the nearby, historically important, Antonine Wall.
The structure is located near the Rough Castle Fort and the closest village is Tamfourhill. On 24 May 2002, Queen Elizabeth II opened the Falkirk Wheel as part of her Golden Jubilee celebrations. The opening was delayed by a month due to flooding caused by vandals, who forced open the Wheel's gates.
The national park itself contains the deepest and most dramatic section of the canyon, but the canyon continues upstream into Curecanti National Recreation Area and downstream into Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area. The canyon's name owes itself to the fact that parts of the gorge only receive 33 minutes of sunlight a day, according to Images of America: The Black Canyon of the Gunnison. In the book, author Duane Vandenbusche states, "Several canyons of the American West are longer and some are deeper, but none combines the depth, sheerness, narrowness, darkness, and dread of the Black Canyon."[3]

A purely experimental image containing home-grown frost, a flashlight, a chuck of shiny blue chalcopyrite, and a Trioplan lens. Read on for how these ingredients interact!
(NOTE: Come see me at the CanAm Photo Expo this year in Buffalo NY March 31 – April 2. Well worth the time with 17 outstanding instructors and I’ll be showcasing all my macro magic in person. Prepare to be educated and inspired: canamphotoexpo.com/ )
We’ve got cold weather. Technically it’s spring when we should be seeing early flowers starting to bloom, but temps have dropped to -18C / 0.4F for a few nights in a row now with more on the way. Trying to continue my winter experiments as the opportunities allow, I placed an ultrasonic humidifier in an outdoor shed and turned it up to full blast. The result in the morning was magnificent – hoarfrost on the shelves and ceiling of the shed, allowing for plenty of photographic ideas to unfold in my mind.
I did some “ordinary” shots of the frost, and I liked them, but they seemed too static and “documentary”. I then experimented with printing gradients of orange-to-blue to place in the background, but it felt too staged and ultimately uninteresting. That’s when I grabbed one of my recent mineral acquisitions, a beautiful blue hue of Chalcopyrite, and placed it behind the frost, far enough to be out of focus.
Knowing that the crystal facets of the mineral will create coloured specular highlights, I knew it was an opportunity for some intense bokeh. I grabbed my trusty Trioplan 100 lens and set out to work with its “soap bubble” bokeh with a composition around one of the larger arms of frost on the top shelf of the shed. I aimed a (very bright) flashlight at the mineral with light spilling off onto the frost with an appropriate balance, and set to work to try and get something in focus.
Interesting, there is no part of the image that I could classify as truly sharp, even though I’ve seen sharpness from this lens at the widest aperture required for the best bokeh, F/2.8 I think this is due to the nature of the frost surface having so many facets that instantly start creating bokeh-like features as soon as focus falls off, and these overlap the areas that would otherwise be in focus as well. I’ve found a number of simple lenses that also generate sizeable chromatic aberration when shooting snowflakes and frost, and this was one of them. Cleaned it up in the frost, but left it in the bokeh for extra subtle ripples of colour.
Even the tip of the frost is fading out of focus and generating interesting bokeh. I shot this with an initial intent to focus stack a few frames together to increase the depth of field, but I fell in love with the abstract nature of the frost falling into the background. It’s a colourful, happy, abstract image. Maybe too colourful and artsy, but that’s where today’s experimentation brought me. I’d love to know your thoughts!
If you’d be interested in hearing musings like this live, with presentations and inventive demos that illustrate exactly how images like this come to life, you should absolutely attend the CanAm Photo Expo in Buffalo NY this year, held at the end of March / Beginning of April. I’m one of many instructors and am honoured to find myself in such a fantastic group of people who educate and inspire: canamphotoexpo.com/ - I’d love to shake your hand in person and show you how my “mad scientist” ideas come about, and how I follow through with them!
