Négombo (Sri Lanka) - Scène prise quelques années avant la catastrophe écologique qui a pollué durablement le littoral de Négombo. En Mai 2021, un porte-conteneurs indonésien a coulé au large des côtes, polluant sur 80 km, les eaux et les plages avec des produits chimiques, des hydrocarbures et 78 tonnes de granulés de polyéthylène. Depuis la pêche a repris, mais on ne connait toujours pas les conséquences sanitaires sur ceux qui consomment le poisson issu de cette région.

Negombo (Sri Lanka) - Scene taken a few years before the ecological disaster which permanently polluted the Negombo coastline. In May 2021, an Indonesian container ship sank off the coast, polluting the waters and beaches, over 80 km, with chemicals, hydrocarbons and 78 tons of polyethylene granules. Fishing has since resumed, but we still do not know the health consequences for those who consume fish from this region.

Lisbon's Oceanarium is one of the world's largest aquariums. Designed by American architect Peter Chermeyeff, it rises from the river and is reached by a footbridge.
It is a deep-sea diving experience without any of the risks, with about 25,000 fish, seabirds, and mammals in an enormous central tank that is the size of four Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Visitors can look into it from different levels for close-ups of the various creatures, including different species of sharks.
But it's the design rather than the size that makes it outstanding.
It is the first aquarium ever to incorporate world ocean habitats within a single environment, with impressive recreations of various ocean ecosystems -- the Antarctic tank containing penguins, and the Pacific tank with otters playing in rock pools.
They are all separated from the main tank by invisible acrylic walls, giving the impression that all the creatures are swimming in the same space.

The Fossil Rim Wildlife Center near Glen Rose Texas sits in an area of flat topped ridges and grassy valleys as seen in this photo. The Ridges are mostly made of Lower Cretaceous limestones mixed with interbeds of shale, clay; siltstone and sandstone. As the name Fossil Rim implies, some of the limestones are fossiliferous and contain gastropods; pelecypods; cephalopods; ammonites; marine macrofossils; fossils
The Korela Fortress Museum contains ancient gates covered with knightly armor. According to one version, Peter I gave the order to nail the armor to the gates after his victory over the Swedes in 1710. After inspecting the arsenal captured in the fortress, Peter I discovered a large number of cuirasses and gave the order to cover the front gates with them, "to put them up for eternal glory as a memory." The cuirasses were dismantled, flattened into sheets of metal, and used to cover the gates. About 70 cuirasses were used.
This is a strange one! The tree is very large and tall but the flowers all hang from stems 10 feet or so from the ground so it feels like they are growing on a vine attached to the tree rather than the tree itself! These are called cauliflorous... flowers that grow from the trunk.
In the rainforests of South American, fruits of the Cannonball tree sway and clash in the wind, creating loud noises like artillery fire! These fruits really do resemble big, rusty cannonballs as they hang in clusters on the side of the tree attached to rope like tangles that emerge directly from the trunk.
The Cannonball tree’s beautifully complex and fragrant flowers resemble huge orchids. At night the flowers become particularly pungent in order to attract swift-flying pollinators. This particular Cannonball tree was collected in 1913 at Jamaica’s Hope Gardens and has flourished at Fairchild since it was planted here in 1938."
Couroupita guianensis, whose common names include Ayahuma and the Cannonball Tree, is an evergreen tree allied to the Brazil Nut (Bertholletia excelsa), and is native to tropical northern South America and to the southern Caribbean. In India it has been growing for the past two or three thousand years at least, as attested by textual records; hence it is possible that it is native to India also. It's part of the family Lecythidaceae and grows up to 25m (82ft) in height. The "Cannonball Tree" is so called because of its brown cannon-ball-like fruits. The majority of these trees outside their natural environment have been planted as a botanical curiosity, as they grow very large, distinctive flowers. Its flowers are orange, scarlet and pink in color, and form large bunches measuring up to 3m in length. They produce large spherical and woody fruits ranging from 15 to 24cm in diameter, containing up to 200 or 300 seeds apiece.

A little walk through one of Springfield's older parks brought this scene to light. Here is some information...
"Fassnight Park is located at Meadowmere Street between Campbell and Grant Avenues. It contains 28 acres of land with trees and a stream. The Springfield Park Board purchased the land in 1924 from Conrad and Emma Fassnight, who had traveled to Springfield with their parents from Michigan in 1886. The foreman of the Fassnight Park project was Godfrey Messerli. He was greatly skilled as a stonemason and created bridges, the bathhouse, the swimming pool and other structures using the fieldstone and Carthage stone found in the area. The labor was done by the Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.).
In 1977 the entire park, including the swimming pool, had deteriorated because of erosion and the fact that the intricate stonemason's work was prohibitively expensive to repair. The pool was closed and the city considering demolishing the swimming pool and bathhouse and replacing them with new state-of-the-art facilities. In the end the city decided to renovate the pool and bathhouse and preserve their unique architecture. This may have been when the waterfall in the pool was removed.
In 1995 a $60,000 water slide was added to Fassnight Pool. It was intended to be a moneymaking venture, with its $3 (later $5) fee helping to fund the swimming pool. An extended pool deck including playground equipment inside the pool area was added later. In 1996 a hard-rubber water serpent was added to the pool. It was tethered to the floor of the shallow end.
Fassnight Park has one of Springfield's most popular pools. The Springfield-Greene County Park Board renovated Fassnight Pool in 2009, and it remains the largest pool in the parks system today."

The park contains an ancient architectural marvel - countless caves intended for a wide range of uses, a complete Roman amphitheater, and the impressive ruins of a fortress and a church from the Crusader period. The national park has sparse woodlands and Mediterranean scrub, rich in many species of flora and fauna.
The Bell Caves - huge quarries from the Byzantine period and Early Arab period. The builders dug out a narrow, round opening in the caliche deposit, and then quarried down, widening the pit more and more, and creating a bell-like shape. The largest of the caves reaches a height of 25 m. The quarry contains some 80 bell pits, whose walls were broken through at a later period, creating a warren of hollow spaces.

The Himalayan range encompasses about 15,000 glaciers, which store about 12,000 km3 (3,000 cubic miles) of fresh water.[16] Its glaciers include the Gangotri and Yamunotri (Uttarakhand) and Khumbu glaciers (Mount Everest region), Langtang glacier (Langtang region) and Zemu (Sikkim).
Owing to the mountains' latitude near the Tropic of Cancer, the permanent snow line is among the highest in the world at typically around 5,500 metres (18,000 ft). In contrast, equatorial mountains in New Guinea, the Rwenzoris and Colombia have a snow line some 900 metres (2,950 ft) lower. The higher regions of the Himalayas are snowbound throughout the year, in spite of their proximity to the tropics, and they form the sources of several large perennial rivers, most of which combine into two large river systems:
The western rivers, of which the Indus is the largest, combine into the Indus Basin.
The Indus begins in Tibet at the confluence of Sengge and Gar rivers and flows southwest through India and then through Pakistan to the Arabian Sea. It is fed by the Jhelum, the Chenab, the Ravi, the Beas, and the Sutlej rivers, among others.

In Fort Myers Florida, at the Davis Art Center, they have a unique exhibit located on the sidewalks in front of the center. These are called the Caloosahatchee Manuscripts. The display are two bronze cylinders about nine feet tall with a words cut into the walls and a light in the middle. The artist was Jim Sanborn. The eastern drum contains a Native American story.
The western drum, contains Latin names of plants that Thomas Edison tested to make a different kind of rubber for car tires. This image was exposure bracketed because of the wide dynamic range needed.

In contrast, equatorial mountains in New Guinea, the Rwenzoris and Colombia have a snow line some 900 metres (2,950 ft) lower. The higher regions of the Himalayas are snowbound throughout the year, in spite of their proximity to the tropics, and they form the sources of several large perennial rivers, most of which combine into two large river systems:
The western rivers, of which the Indus is the largest, combine into the Indus Basin.
The Indus begins in Tibet at the confluence of Sengge and Gar rivers and flows southwest through India and then through Pakistan to the Arabian Sea. It is fed by the Jhelum, the Chenab, the Ravi, the Beas, and the Sutlej rivers, among others.
Most of the other Himalayan rivers drain the Ganges-Brahmaputra Basin. Its main rivers are the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Yamuna, as well as other tributaries. The Brahmaputra originates as the Yarlung Tsangpo River in western Tibet, and flows east through Tibet and west through the plains of Assam. The Ganges and the Brahmaputra meet in Bangladesh, and drain into the Bay of Bengal through the world's largest river delta, the Sunderbans.
The viola is a large family containing 500 species, they are on record in Greece from the 4th century B.C.
Later in Europe, it was discovered that a plant similar to a viola grew in open areas.
The plant found mostly in fields and amongst rocks in the Alps, hence Alpine.
It became known as a wild pansy (French:pensÈe).
It might have been a romantic Frenchman who 'named' it...
A pensÈe can be a thought or a saying, short or it can be as long as a paragraph, a page, a poem!
Maybe he thought of his loved-one, dried one amongst some book he carried?

The Den Burg General Cemetery on Texel contains a war plot with 167 war graves of Allied servicemen, primarily airmen who crashed over the island during World War II. Among them are 44 unknown soldiers. The plot, recognizable by the white Cross of Sacrifice of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, is an important place of remembrance. At the entrance stands the 1940–1945 War Memorial with a bronze Good Shepherd, and in 1975, survivors of the Georgian Uprising donated a Tree of Life in tribute. The plot is a silent witness to the war and an enduring symbol of international solidarity.

Op de algemene begraafplaats van Den Burg op Texel ligt een ereveld met 167 oorlogsgraven van geallieerde militairen, vooral vliegeniers die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog boven het eiland zijn neergestort. Onder hen zijn ook 44 onbekenden. Het veld, herkenbaar aan het witte offerkruis van de Commonwealth War Graves Commission, vormt een belangrijke plek van herdenking. Voor de ingang staat het oorlogsmonument 1940–1945 met een bronzen Goede Herder, en in 1975 schonken overlevenden van de Georgische opstand een levensboom als eerbetoon. Het ereveld is een stille getuige van de oorlog en een blijvend symbool van internationale solidariteit.

I grew two varieties of organic tomatillos this year. This was my first try at this plant, and they were a winner in the garden, producing hundreds of little fruits.
The tomatillo fruit is surrounded by a paper-like husk formed from the calyx. As the fruit matures, it fills the husk and can split it open by harvest. The husk turns brown, and the fruit can be any of a number of colors when ripe, including yellow, red, green, or even purple.
Tomatillos are the key ingredient in fresh and cooked Latin American green sauces. The freshness and greenness of the husk are quality criteria. Fruit should be firm and bright green, as the green colour and tart flavour are the main culinary contributions of the fruit.
Other parts of the tomatillo plant contain toxins, and should not be eaten.
Tomatillo plants are highly self-incompatible (two or more plants are needed for proper pollination; thus isolated tomatillo plants rarely set fruit).
Fresh ripe tomatillos will keep in the refrigerator for about two weeks. They will keep even longer if the husks are removed and the fruits are placed in sealed plastic bags stored in the refrigerator.[2] They may also be frozen whole or sliced.

Mud dauber (or "mud wasp" or "dirt dauber") is a name commonly applied to a number of wasps from either the family Sphecidae or Crabronidae that build their nests from mud.
The organ pipe mud dauber, one of many mud daubers in the family Crabronidae, builds nests in the shape of a cylindrical tube resembling an organ pipe or pan flute. Each nest contains one egg.

The Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis) belongs to the genus Branta of black geese, which contains species with largely black plumage, distinguishing them from the grey Anser species.
The Barnacle Goose is a medium-sized goose, 55 - 70 cm long, with a wingspan of 130 - 145 cm and a weight of 1.2 - 2.2 kg. It has a white face and black head, neck, and upper breast. Its belly is white. The wings and its back are silver-gray with black-and-white bars that look like they are shining when the light reflects on it. It flies in packs and long lines, with a noisy chorus of barking or yapping sounds.
Barnacle geese feed on grasses and coastal plants found in salt marshes, grasslands near river estuaries or tidal mud flats.
The wintering population (130.000 birds) in the Netherlands breeds in Arctic Russia and the Baltic.
This picture was taken at the Lauwersmeer, a man-made lake in the north of the Netherlands, on the border of the provinces of Groningen and Friesland. The lake was formed on 1969, when the dike between the bay called Lauwerssea" and the Waddensea was closed. The Lauwersmeer is now one of the famoust birding areas in Western Europe. The area is famous for the huge numbers of birds. During the winter months the Lauwersmeer is famous for the huge numbers of geese. You will see thousands of Barnacle Geese, White Fronted Geese, Greylag Geese and also good numbers of Bean Geese, Brant, Tundra Swan and Whooper Swan.
De brandgans (Branta leucopsis) is een sterke ongeveer 60 cm grote gans, die weinig of geen last ondervindt van vriesweer, met geelachtige witte kop, waarvan de achterzijde zwart is, met een zwarte nek en bovenborst. Als deze gans tijdens de winter aan de Nederlandse kust opduikt, worden ze al vlug verraden door het wit van hun wangen dat fel afsteekt op het zwart van de kop en hals.
Hun broedgebied is het noordelijk deel van de Atlantische Oceaan, van de oostkust van Groenland tot Spitsbergen en het zuiden van Nova Zembla. Het wintergebied bevindt zich vooral aan de kusten van Ierland, de westkust van Schotland en de Noordzeekust van Duitsland en Nederland.
De Nederlandse overwinteraars komen vooral van Nova Zembla.
De laatste jaren blijven grote groepen brandganzen in Nederland en zijn dus het hele jaar door op Nederlandse graslanden te vinden.
Deze foto is genomen bij het Lauwersmeer, op de grens van Groningen en Friesland bij de Waddenzee. Jaarlijks met meer dan 100.000 vogels een van de grootste en belangrijkste overwinterengebieden voor brandganzen in Nederland.
