At Corizon Health, 2017 is the year of exceeding expectations – an ambitious goal.
American Express’s annual Global Customer Service Barometer survey consistently finds that only 62 percent of customers believe companies meet their expectations and only 5 percent of companies exceed the expectations of their customers. In other words, 33 percent of companies fail to meet, much less exceed, client service expectations.
To be clear, this is a survey of U.S. consumers and not correctional administrators. Imagine how impactful exceeding expectations would be for those whose morale and expectations may have been hammered by bureaucracy, limited budgets and lack of recognition.
Ironically, the 2014 version of the survey found the top-ranking (29 percent) characteristic of companies who exceed expectations is “delivering promised value at the right price.” I find it incredible that a large percentage of our clients may perceive us as having exceeded expectations just by delivering the healthcare program we promised in our proposals and contracts.
But as Karey has made clear, meeting the terms of our contracts is not our definition of exceeding expectations; our goal is to add value over and above what we have promised in our contracts.
Consistent with the foregoing, client satisfaction research reveals two fundamentals to exceeding expectations are anticipation (anticipating a client’s needs, ideally before the customer actually is aware of the need), and response (appropriately responding when problems arise). Neither is possible without strong collaboration within our client teams and across departments.
We all know that interdisciplinary collaboration in patient care leads to better outcomes, and organizational collaboration enhances innovation and efficiency. That same approach to collaboration when it comes to client relations is similarly valuable. Creating a collaborative environment, however, is easier said than done.
In his book Collaboration, Morten T. Hansen, a management professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and founder of the Center for Corporate Transformation, identified the following barriers to collaboration. Let’s think about how they apply in our organization, and how we might overcome them to exceed expectations.
Not-Invented-Here Barrier: Not Willing to Reach Out to Others. This barrier occurs when communication stays within a group/silo and people are not willing to reach out to others maybe because they fear they will be perceived as weak. To be collaborative, we must be willing to say, “I don’t know,” to be open-minded to new approaches, and to admit when we need assistance.
Hoarding Barrier: Not Willing to Provide Help. There may be several reasons people hold back information or don’t cooperate, including pride, competition between departments or locations, fear of losing power or influence, or the perception that collaboration requires too much time or effort. Collaboration occurs by recognizing a shared goal, trusting co-workers, and acknowledging contributions.
Search Barrier: Not Able to Find What You Are Looking For. In an organization as geographically diverse as Corizon, collaboration often occurs virtually or through the telephone. It is essential we’re all comfortable in a remote and virtual working world. This is not always easy inside a secure facility where much of our work involves confidential health information. Our leadership team is actively engaged in finding ways to share information and engage with our site team members who may not have access to email. If we trust our colleagues, this barrier should disappear.
The flip side of the search-barrier coin is that too much information may also hurt collaboration. For example, I recognize our MyCorizon website has become packed with information, yielding pages of hits on keyword searches.
Transfer Barrier: Not Able to Work with People You Don't Know Well. In my view, this is one of the greatest challenges we must overcome to exceed expectations and it’s on each of us to address. We can only exceed our clients’ expectations by working together and that requires trust, respect and a shared mission of excellence. If we ignore the contribution of co-workers because they are in a different location, a different job classification, have a different educational background, or are of a different gender, race, ethnicity, or religious background – or any of the vast number of other ways we find to divide ourselves - we have missed the opportunity to gain different insights into the challenges we face.
Transfer barriers also occur when we identify more with the facility at which we work and don’t view ourselves as part of Corizon. Regardless of where we are in our careers, each of us has a responsibility to ourselves, our patients, our clients, and our company to do our best work.
Through collaborating, we can leverage the collective genius of our team’s observations, not just our own. This might be in the form of a best practice, a new technology to address duplicative time-consuming processes, or a way to share resources and do more for less.
Collaboration also allows us to respond appropriately when issues arise. Research has found that customer satisfaction is not based on the speed of the response as much as it is on the appropriateness of the response. For example, I am much less satisfied with the customer service line that promptly picks up my call but leads me through a series of menu items, hold times, and call transfers to eventually reach a person qualified to help me. I am more satisfied waiting for a callback if I know the person who will call me back will be fully capable of resolving my issue.
While our client issues are typically much more complex than those handled through toll-free customer service lines, the basic premise is the same: Our clients want the person – or team of people – with the knowledge and ability to fully address their issue rapidly engaged and working as quickly as possible on a solution. Without collaboration, we too often try to address an issue within the silo of a department or a location, resulting in unnecessary delays in achieving a satisfactory outcome. With collaboration, we apply our strongest skills, solve problems appropriately, and impress our clients.

Saying that Delaware has made consistent progress in reducing its infant mortality rate, Governor Carney told the Delaware Maternal and Child Health Summit on April 17 that the goal is that “every child in Delaware is born healthy” and has the opportunity to be successful in his or her life.
“I’m optimistic that we can address all of these challenges,” the Governor said in figuring out new and innovative ways to bring down the state’s infant mortality rate from its current 7.5 deaths per 1,000 live births to match or fall below the national average rate of 5.9. Delaware’s infant mortality rate has declined from a high of 9.3 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2005. The Delaware Healthy Mothers and Infants Consortium was created in 2005 to address Delaware’s high rate of infant deaths.
“The fact that some segments in our state already have birth outcomes that are better than the national average is a clear indication that we can get there together,” DHSS Secretary Dr. Kara Odom Walker said of the state’s white infant mortality rate that is at 5.1 deaths per 1,000 live births. The black infant mortality rate in Delaware is 12.5. “For the families who experience this terrible nightmare, we can do better,” Secretary Walker said. “That’s what gets me up every day, knowing we can do better.”
Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long, a registered nurse, also applauded the progress made to reduce infant mortality in the state, but said the measure is a public health indicator of a state’s overall health.
Attorney General Matt Denn said the increasing number of substance-exposed infants in the state indicates that “the opioid crisis is a healthy infants crisis as well.”
Kenn Harris of New Haven Healthy Start, one of the summit’s keynote speakers, has devoted his career to child and maternal health after he and his wife lost their second son as a baby. “There is no single fix for this issue of infant mortality … It takes innovation,” he said in encouraging the more than 300 attendees at the Chase Center to listen to and engage their communities. “We have to work on our listening.”

Autumn is consistently a great time to visit, with the foliage adding so much in spectacular, rich colors. And even during the latter part of the season, there is something so special about the bareness of many trees and vegetation. The nice thing as an observer of nature’s critters is that the birds are so much more visible. Even if they are at a fair distance, at least, one can appreciate their features. Also, many fall berries and other fruits and nuts, often with bright colors and interesting shapes, accentuate the landscape as seen only at this time of year.
The late, Doris Duke, had left a wonderful legacy in converting her magnificent estate into a Natural Wildlife Preserve for the public’s education and enjoyment. The paths throughout the estate offer such splendid scenery. One is forever exploring, always seeing something subtly beautiful. There are always pleasant surprises, from the general scenery to the world of the wildlife, even tiny insects and flowers are enjoyable to observe. The bucolic nature of the preserve is so relaxing—akin to meditating while experiencing the landscape. The beauty of visiting Duke Farms is that so many incredible views are there simply by observing all of the surroundings. Spotting new and fascinating wildlife—both animals and plants—always adds to the experience.

My Minox 35GT is consistently underexposing by a couple of stops. I've
started adjusting the film speed to make up for it but I'm adjusting
slowly, a stop at a time. This was fully two, maybe even three stops
underexposed, so I had to adjust the image "curves" digitally to get
it as bright as this. But it was a dark day.
I like poured concrete buildings and have been photographing them
inconsistently for 25 years. They were popular here from the late
1920s until perhaps the early 1950s. Many show art deco or modernist
styling, like this one.
I have often puzzled over the concavity in the nearest bit of concrete
retaining wall. It's like a large culvert once ran through it, which
I cannot imagine was the case.

Nature is a sensational part of the world we live in. Consistently surrounded by crispy, beautiful leaves, floating, smooth flowers and unexpected, sudden weather. Nature is mainly affected due to the four seasons that fall between each and every year. Spring, summer, autumn and winter all represent various changes between the two regarding nature. Spring is often thought to be the season of youth, new life and birth. It is often regarded to be thought of the season of new life due to the nature that is born such as chicks and lambs which by many is associated as the re-born of Jesus. The colours associated with spring are bright, pastel colours such as super lemon and vibrant green. Summer is associated as being the season of long, warm days, with fully grown flowers, trees and plants. However it is towards the end of this long, warm season in which the trees begin to die out due to the heat. Unlike the previous seasons which are full of green, budding trees and powerful coloured flowers, it is in the season of autumn in which these sensational colours begin to fade and die away. Although this season is the beginning of the process of dying for a lot of nature such as trees, it is a beautiful season full of shades of light orange, forest brown and deep green.
The astonishing, beautiful seasons spring, summer and autumn inspired this piece as although they are all diverse and unique seasons from one another, they all represent parts within in the life cycle of nature. When creating this dress, it was important to highlight the life cycle of leaves on trees through the seasons. To create this a variety of colours, techniques and materials were used to create texture, layering and depth into the impact these seasons have on such an ordinary, expected aspect of the world’s nature. The representation of leaves in spring has been created using a burning technique. This captured an assortment of bright green textured fabrics such as silk, felt and cotton which appeared in different tones due to their textures and thickness. The burning appears full and layered which reflects the leaves in spring. In this season they are budding, creating new fresh leaves. It is in the spring season in which trees appear bursting and full of colour. By using the technique of burning, the stitching to hold the fabrics in place is tight and pulled together to hold a firm structure. This exaggerates the idea that the leaves in spring are tightly held together, supporting one another in their journey through the seasons. Summer has been represented using a solufleece material. This fabric tightens which expresses how the leaves on trees in summer are still bursting with leaves and brightness however to stress that towards to end of summer trees start to fall and open away from one another, small sections of the solufleece has been burnt away on the dress. This highlights aspects of the spring from the burning beneath however also exaggerates how going into autumn pulls all of the oxygen from the leaves leaving them crispy and crackly. The colours, textures and bareness of autumn has been symbolised through felt. The felt has been created using colours such as red, orange, yellow and green all fused together to create a warm layered piece. Within the felt there are aspects of scrim and stitching. This contrasts against the smooth, fluffy feel of the felt however represents the dead, crisp feeling of leaves in autumn. Between the top half of the dress and the bottom between summer and autumn, a cotton waist band has been applied. This is as unlike spring and summer, there are numerous changes between summer and autumn which make them particularly different. Applied on top of the waist band are various sized leaves created using tyvek. This crisp, fragmented material exaggerates what the dress is based and inspired from. The leaves are created using colours associated with autumn however blend into the section of the dress based on summer leaves. The leaves appear 3D creating new layers and textures.

The 53rd annual Bon Odori Festival at Camp Zama was held Aug. 4. The festival is consistently the largest bilateral event of the year for U.S. Army Japan, this year attracting more than 30,000 visitors to the installation. The festival featured live entartainment, games for children, a variety of ethnic foods, bilateral sports, and a fireworks show.
About the United States Army Garrison Japan:
The United States Army Garrison Japan and its 16 supported installation sites are located in the island of Honshu and Okinawa in Japan. The USAG Japan mission is to support the Headquarters, U.S. Army Japan / I Corps (fwd) to ensure mission readiness and the quality of life of the Army community in a sustainable, transforming joint and combined environment.
The USAG-J area of responsibility spans 1,500 miles from north to south of Japan. Camp Zama, home for both HQ USARJ and USAG-J is located approximately 25 miles southwest of Tokyo in the cities of Zama and Sagamihara in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The Camp Zama base cluster includes Sagamihara Housing Area and Sagami General Depot.
Akasaka Press Center is located in the center of Tokyo. The Akizuki/Kure area near Hiroshima is an ammunition depot. Yokohama North Dock is a port facility in the city of Yokohama, a major commerce port and a popular shopping area. USAG Torii Station is located 980 miles southwest of Camp Zama on the island of Okinawa.
