I loved this Water-Conservation Meditation Garden that is filled with drought-resistant plants. A handful of artists incorporated recycled materials into installations that line the once-vacant lot. This project was managed by Rebuilding Together San Diego, a nonprofit organization focused on neighborhood revitalization and affordable homeownership.

In September of 2010 more than 300 volunteers gathered to paint the recreation center and nearby homes at Azalea Park.

A close-up (horizontal cross-section) of the layer in figure 23 that has chroma of 2 or less and at least 2 percent redox concentrations.

These soils have a layer starting at a depth ≤15 cm (6 inches) from the soil surface that is at least 10 cm (4 inches) thick and has a matrix with 60 percent or more chroma of 2 or less and 2 percent or more distinct or prominent redox concentrations occurring as soft masses and/or pore linings.

User Notes: “Distinct” and “prominent” are defined in the Glossary. Redox concentrations include iron and manganese masses (reddish mottles) and pore linings (Vepraskas, 1994). Included within the concept of redox concentrations are iron-manganese bodies occurring as soft masses with diffuse boundaries. Common (2 to less than 20 percent) or many (20 percent or more) redox concentrations are required (USDA, NRCS, 2002). If the soil is saturated at the time of sampling, it may be necessary to let it dry to a moist condition for redox features to become visible (figs. 22 and 23). This is a very common indicator of hydric soils and is often used to identify the hydric/nonhydric soil boundary in sandy soils.

It was a beautiful day on the river for our cleanup in Sugar Creek! 198 volunteers joined us at LaBenite Park on Saturday, April 13 to aid in our efforts to remove tons of trash from the banks of the Missouri River. We also hosted our title sponsors, Evergy, for a day of stewardship out of Cooley Lake Conservation Area on Thursday, April 11. In all, we managed to remove 7 TONS of trash from over 18 miles of river with the help of 269 volunteers! Thank you so much to all our volunteers, partners, and sponsors who made these efforts possible.

Jim Bridger Urban Conservation Area comprises more than 300 acres along the border of Blue Springs and Lee's Summit, Mo. It's adjacent to Kemper Outdoor Education Center near Lake Jacomo and trails between the two entities interconnect. Bridger has been designated a Great Missouri Birding Trail and it’s an excellent place to view wildlife. The refuge consists of rolling prairie intersected by clear, rocky streams. The larger stream provides dramatic scenery including waterfalls, limestone outcroppings and rocky bluffs. When you cross from Bridger to the Kemper Center, the environment moves into a more pastoral realm. Learn more at LeesSummitGo.com (Bridger page is at bit.ly/3qBROYl).
