I took this photos at the Water Conservation Garden at Cuyamaca College. The Water Conservation Garden has nearly five acres of displays that showcase water conservation through a series of beautiful themed gardens, such as a native plant garden and a vegetable garden, as well as how-to displays such as mulch and irrigation exhibits. Admission is free, and the Garden can be viewed on a self-guided tour, or through one of our programs.

Due to imported rodents, there's a Kiwi chick survival rate of 5% in the wild. The programme collects eggs from nests, hatches them and returns the grown Kiwis to their forest with a 85% survival rate.

The former home of the Black Cultural Archive, now Rooster Cottage. Lambeth did apparently refuse permission for the change of use and for the ghastly signage on the grounds that this is a conservation area, but the new owners appealed and central government waved the application through.

Drought of the Archives: New Yorkers have a long history of coming together to conserve. When we faced water shortages in the 1930s to ’50s, stickers and posters served as handy reminders. Their message holds up! 💦

Department of Water Supply, Gas and Electricity sticker, date unknown. The Great Bear Spring Company sold bottled water, so their motive for sponsoring this public service material is up for interpretation.

We've partnered with Elephants Without Borders to reduce conflict between people and elephants, such as growing certain chili species thought to be unpalatable to elephants to keep them from encroaching on farmland in Botswana. Early tests show this may be a workable long-term solution.

Located in Western Montana, Ninemile was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1934 - 1935. It served as the National Forest Ranger Station for the area. Along with that, Ninemile was also a Remount Depot, which housed up to 1500 mules and horses. These animals were used to move workers and supplies into the Montana mountains to suppress fires and perform backcountry work projects.

OES DAS Daniel Reifsnyder met with regional authorities, park managers, NGOs, scientists and students on a wide variety of subjects such as Amur tiger and Far Eastern Leopard conservation. There are an estimated 400-500 Amur tigers left in the Russian Far East and less than 50 leopards. Here, he is learning about how the Wildlife Conservation Society monitors these big cats to gather information on their habits and health. These efforts are instrumental in helping to save these populations from extinction.

Volunteer Name: Lycourgas Manlpoulos, Project Location: Costa Rica

Program Dates: March 13 – March 24, 2014, Volunteered at: Sea Turtle (Pacific)

How was the local ABV Coordinator and the support provided in-country?

Nicky was very friendly. She spoke Spanish very well, and was always prepared. She has much knowledge about the sea turtles.

What was the most surprising thing you experience?

CR reminded me of Greece. I was able to adjust rather quickly to the scenery, food and water. The wildlife was also very surprising. I have never seen a cow with a hump on its back…

What was the most difficult to experience?

There is a lot to get “used to” when you arrive. There is a major shock due to lack of technology and electricity. You must be very social and open since you will be around others all the time. My biggest problem was adjusting to being very dirty every day!

Any tips for future volunteers… (Clothing, travel, personal items, donations)

Do not expect to be clean at any given moment. Bring bug spray and bedding, snacks and refillable water bottle, books and deck of cards and obviously deodorant.

Other things volunteers should know

A) Let the cook know about any special diets you have

b) Be aware water may be limited

c) Sand gets very hot!

Personal Paragraph (ABV Testimonial)

This was my very first trip abroad without my family. I was very excited to come to CR to help out the sea turtles and see the culture. This ABV program has definitely broadened my view of volunteering and the culture.

How would you describe your accommodations, meals, security?

I was very happy the cook provided my vegan meals. I like how we were able to travel to Samara to relax.

What was your favorite memory of this trip?

Meeting and chatting up new people and also my own group. I realized all of us had many things in common. Everyone seemed to have bonded at a high level of friendship.

How as the ABV support prior to traveling?

There was plenty of information provided to us so we were able to know what the project would be like.

I felt this information helped us adjust to the project easily and with less stress.

Are you willing to speak to other potential ABV volunteers?

Yes!
