ABOUT THIS PLACE… The timing was perfect, May, a month or two after the farmers had sowed whatever is so beautifully carpeting these hills and rills; wheat? alfalfa?, Barley?, Anyway, it’s one of the most serene, peaceful, ‘heavenly’ places I’ve ever been. What a relief from the traffic congested, urban and even suburban soul-sucking, iDENTITY robbing cities in Southern California, where I was born and raised. Although… I have been told that if I was standing in the same spot in a December or January, it would be leaving me with a much DIFFERENT impression, because of the bitter winters they must endure here. So, if you come to Idaho, come in May.

The Beurstraverse (also known as Koopgoot) is a shopping street in the Dutch city of Rotterdam. The street lies below the level of the Coolsingel.
Unfortunately, traditional single-wagon transport is becoming a dying breed in Germany. DB Cargo would prefer to discontinue the service immediately, as it is too costly and loss-making. From a purely economic point of view, this is understandable. However, this does not take into account the fact that it avoids numerous lorry journeys, which congest the roads and are less environmentally friendly. A number of mixed freight trains can still be seen on the KBS 880 line, particularly in traffic to and from Austria. Purely within Germany, the 185 271 was on the move on 13 June 2025. It hauled the EZ 50819 from Nuremberg Rbf to Plattling and I was able to photograph it shortly before Parsberg in the Upper Palatinate with a colourful mix of freight.

Everywhere I go, I make friends. This whole area isn't forgotten, it's just waiting to turn into condos. Considering the area I don't see it working too well with the lack of good transportation options including already congested roads. Never mind the whole area being a mix of garages, junk yards and concrete facilities, and power lines. No thanks.
Malin Beg, Glencolmcille, County Donegal, Ireland
What more could one say about the Silver Strand Beach other than it’s simply one of the most stunning beaches you could ever lay eyes on. Certainly one of Ireland’s finest horseshoe beaches, complete with its surrounding natural sea grass landscape. Located on the extreme western point of rural Donegal, far away from the everyday bustling of congested towns and traffic jams.
On arrival you are still extremely high above this cove which was carved deep into the surrounding bedrock throughout millions of years of wave erosion. There’s a steep 174 stepped path leading down to this dreamy beach. An experience your mind will never forget walking down and an experience your legs will never forget from climbing back up them 😅 Great for both your body & mind.....
Such a surreal feeling to gaze across our vast Atlantic Ocean (The Pond) knowing that the next stop is America & Canada! Silver Strand is pretty much a little bit of heaven tucked safely away here in Ireland’s side pocket 💚

I love it when the Tanana River [TA-nuh-nah] freezes up this way.
Certain conditions must occur for this kind of ice to form; water must be moving, and supercooled (30° to 21°, -1C to -6). Water begins to form ice crystals, which gather in 'rafts' that spin and bump in the currents, forming pans with slightly rigged edges where they jostle into each other.
As this kind of ice progresses, the pans become larger, thicker, taking over the entire surface of the river. As this happens, the river becomes 'vocal', making shushy-whispering sounds as the pans jostle and bump.
As temperatures get colder with winter's progress, the pans eventually become so congested that they become fast and form an unmoving solid and jumbled surface on the river.
In high summer the cobbled streets of Dent can become quite congested and overrun by tourists but time your visit right and you can have the place to yourselves.

This is the most congested part of Glaisdale with the church on the left.
Glaisdale Head Methodist Church (note church not chapel) was built in 1821 It appears more like a house
It is a listed building Grade II. It is described as a place of Worship, Condition - Poor, Priority C - Slow decay, no solution agreed
Glaisdale is a beautiful dale set in the North York Moors National Park arguably displaying God’s craftsmanship at its best. The chapel is situated in a very peaceful and tranquil place towards the upper part of the valley and has its own graveyard, a very unusual feature for a Methodist place of worship.

It was a crazy busy, and congested night on this end of the Christiansburg district last night. 119 was literally down to 1.5mph heading up the grade on wet rails after a stop just short of the grade in Elliston. To the right of it on main 127 made a good run of the hill and passed 119.

The Cross-Harbour Tunnel is the first tunnel in Hong Kong built under water. It has become one of the most congested roads (mainly towards Hong Kong Island direction) in Hong Kong and the world. The tunnel was constructed using the Immersed tube method.
Constructed by a private company and operated under a 30-year franchise, the 1.8 km-long tunnel crossing opened in 1972, providing the first road link between Kowloon and Hong Kong Island; Cross-harbour vehicular traffic depended on ferries before the tunnel was built.
Although there have been Eastern Harbour Crossing and Western Harbour Crossing diversion, but the two high toll (charge from HK $ 13 - $ 128 range), and the convenient geographic location are not as The Cross-Harbour Tunnel, The Cross-Harbour Tunnel congestion and therefore not only failed to improve and deteriorating, especially on weekends and holidays, and sometimes to midnight queues can still be seen.
Former Wessex No.2410 approaches Victoria with an Gatwick to Victoria service on the evening of 2nd August 2013.
In the first decade of the 21st century, an increasingly congested Brighton Mainline led to challenges with the Gatwick Express operation.
Gatwick Airport station is almost halfway between Brighton and London. With traffic to Brighton and the Sussex resorts booming, turning around a train every 15 minutes across the flat junction north of the airport was eating valuable paths on the line.
Worse, the class 460 units, with their generous luggage space, seat pitch and a dedicated baggage car were ill-suited as commuter trains to serve the Sussex coast routes.
The solution was wide-ranging and surprising: the Gatwick Express franchise was absorbed into the new Southern franchise that operated most other trains on the line, the class 460s were returned to their leasing company, most of the recently retired class 442 fleet replaced them and peak hours dedicated Victoria to Gatwick paths were extended through to Brighton.
The class 442s were given a dedicated livery as seen here and were internally refurbished. Initially they carried Gatwick Express branding but by the time of my photo they were also used for some peak hours trains to Eastbourne, and the word 'Gatwick' was removed from their branding.
Traffic in the city. My Nightmare.
Was going through some different photos tonight and found this one that was taken exactly 8 years ago at Becks Road.
Lots has changed here on the far western edge of Duluth. CN SD60Fs 5548 and 5527 have since been retired by CN. They were the usual helper engines that summer (as the Helper Link on the nose of 5548 shows) but here are lugging a 95-car Proctor Transfer up Steelton Hill with a different pair shoving behind.
Besides the power being gone, Steelton Hill has been completely redone with double track. A new 2 main right of way comes from the right and the track where the cars curve behind the power has been torn up. Still the new track here on Steelton Hill hasn't solved all of CN's problems in the Twin Ports, as the this Summer of 2018 is the most congested I've ever seen the CN here on Steelton Hill and south of Superior.

On 12 April 2025, at midday, the 1293.195 passed through the Altmühl Valley with a mixed freight train. This was a diversion from the KBS 880, which was congested due to limited line capacity. Based on the wagons in the train, I would guess it was the DGS 44940 from Linz Vbf-Ost to Rheinkamp near Duisburg, which was then travelling earlier than usual.

I have never been so emotionally moved as I was while visiting India. The country is filled with beautiful architecture, wonderful colors, exotic foods, and bustling streets.
The concerned mothers in this image are undoubtedly worried about crossing a very congested street in “old Delhi,” the oldest area of Delhi; a tangle of ancient streets and alleyways, filled with all kinds of shops, jam packed with people, and is the place to go for chaos and mayhem.

I was enjoying one of my rather hasty forays into sunrise photography while going to work (like my earlier post, The Core). It was early Spring, the leaves still a silent promise on the branches of the trees - the fields still apparently inert, after the recent ploughing. A striking aspect of the situation was that I could not walk too deep in the countryside (I was on my way to work, after all), so I was fairly close to a heavily congested road - yet it feel like being on an entirely different planet. My ears were still hearing the constant hum of the early rush hour, yet my brain was not registering it. For some fleeting, blessed moments I was disconnected from all that frenzy, and connected with my own soul - and with the soul of the world. Then the sun rose behind the curtains of the still naked trees, and suddenly the intricate tangle of the branches looked like a set of primeval runes whose meaning is lost to us - runes written in the language of creation. Yet my soul was grasping the message, in a fundamentally different way from understanding as we usually mean it. I cannot even try and put all that in words but, well, I am posting this photo just hoping that it can somehow convey the message to you.
I have obtained this picture by blending a 5-exposure bracketing [-2.0/-1.0/0/+1.0/+2.0 EV] by luminosity masks with the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal exposure" shot), then I added some final touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4. I tried the inverted RGB blue channel technique described by Boris Hajdukovic as a possible final contribution to the processing, which especially improved the ploughed field in the foreground.

The Victory Tunnel (Galleria della Vittoria), built in the 1930s, is a major traffic artery that crosses part of the city, facilitating passage between the centre and other districts by bypassing the most congested areas.
It is a key infrastructure in Genoa's road network, which has a very uneven topography.
The striking and colourful architecture around Manchester can make for some interesting shots - especially some of the new-builds in the Oxford Road / Deansgate area.
In this shot, Northern unit 150123 approaches Deansgate station with the 2.31pm Manchester Piccadilly - Blackpool North (2N68) while, in the distance, East Midlands Train unit 158799 is just about to draw into Manchester's Oxford Road station with the 1.52pm Liverpool Lime Street - Norwich (1L12).
Happy to report both trains were pretty well running to time on this very congested stretch of track.

Echinaceas have grown in popularity in recent years, thanks to the new trend for prairie-style planting. Known for their use in herbal medicine, these herbaceous perennials have pretty, daisy-like flowers with a central cone, hence their common name, coneflower. They're easy to grow as they tolerate most soils (except very dry ones), and their sturdy stems mean that staking is unnecessary.
Echinacea purpurea, also known as purple coneflower, has pink flowers and a large, orange-brown cone in the centre. It's perfect for growing in drifts towards the middle or back of a cottage-style or herbaceous border, or among grasses and rudbeckias in a prairie-style planting scheme. It's resistant to adverse weather and doesn't need staking. The flowers are long-lived, are excellent for cutting and are extremely attractive to pollinators. There are many cultivars of Echinacea purpurea available, ranging in height, flower colour and size of cone.
Grow Echinacea purpurea in well-drained soil in full sun. Deadhead the flowers as they fade to encourage more to form, but in autumn leave the seedheads for the birds. Cut them back the following spring, when the new foliage emerges.
Mulch echinaceas with well-rotted manure or compost in autumn. Lift congested clumps in autumn or spring.

Iily of the valley in the forest. There were a lot of them (see previous photo) :)
Lily of the Valley is possibly the only species in the genus Convallaria in the flowering plant family Ruscaceae. This woodland plant is native throughout the cool temperate Northern Hemisphere in Asia and Europe and a limited native population in Eastern USA. it is a herbaceous perennial plant that forms extensive colonies by spreading underground stems called rhizomes. New upright shoots are formed at the ends of stolons in summer, these upright dormant stems are often called pips. These grow in the spring into new leafy shoots that still remain connected to the other shoots under ground, often forming extensive colonies. Flowering is in late spring, in mild winters in the Northern Hemisphere it is in early March. Plants are self-sterile, and colonies consisting of a single clone do not set seed. All parts of the plant are potentially poisonous, including the red berries which may be attractive to children. The plant has been used in herbal medicine in moderate amounts by physicians and herbalists for centuries, particularly for mild congestive heart failure and arrhythmias. Lily of the Valley is a popular garden plant, grown for its scented flowers and for its ground-covering abilities in shady locations. Some consider it a weed, as it can spread over a wide area in gardens and can be difficult to contain or remove. Traditionally, lily of the valley is sold in the streets of France on May 1. Lily of the valley is also the national flower of Finland.

Where the double track Montréal - Toronto Canadian Pacific mainline cross former Canadian National Alexandria subdivision, once part of the quicker CN route thru Algonquin Park in order to by pass the always congested Toronto area. That morning, the Canadian Pacific local section crew wait in the clear on the North track within interlocking limit for a couple of passenger trains to pass over the now VIA Rail-owned Alexandria subdivision before starting some well needed work on the diamond itself.
Not so much happen in DeBeaujeu now but back in Canadian National and even after the 1998 sale of Ottawa terminal operation to the newly created Ottawa Central, both railroads exchanged cars here on an almost daily basis.
CP still ran a turn from Smith Falls, doing the milk run twice or so times a week in order to satisfy the few remaining customers left over this once busy mainline.
VIA ran five pairs of trains on a daily basis between Montréal and Ottawa and CN, who brought back Ottawa Central operation back in 2008, connecting their Ottawa terminal and it's seven customers left with the Kingston subdivision mainline at Coteau two or three times a week.

A "Goat Boat" Heritage I Dash 9 leads BNSF train H-GFDTUL4-30A on Main Track 3 of the joint BNSF Marceline Sub-NS Kansas City District at Camden.
With a pair of trains dead on Main Tracks 1 and 2 at Henrietta, traffic was congested on this portion of the Transcon this afternoon as eastbounds and westbounds took turns fleeting down Main Track 3.
BNSF owns and maintains Main 1 and 2 between CA JCT and Hardin, and Main 1 from Hardin to WB JCT, whereas NS owns and maintains Main 3 from CA JCT to Hardin, and then Main 2 from Hardin to WB JCT. These are all dispatched by BNSF. 4/2/22.
Looking north on the Valley Industrial from CP-Home toward Aspinwall. This is the former PRR-PC-CR Brilliant Branch. As can be seen, there used to be 4 tracks here and over the entire branch. There used to be a track at the far right and also where I am standing. The formerly 2 tracks on the right were the east leg of the wye, the the left track was the west leg of the wye, and still is today. The abandoned line I am standing on used to be a jump-over bridge over the 4 track Pennsy mainline (which is behind me) so that traffic could proceed crossing over un-interrupted. The 2 right tracks would go to the Valley line (Allegheny Branch, old Allegheny Valley RR) at Nadine, the 2 left tracks crossed the Allegheny River to UY Tower at Aspinwall/Sharpsburg. The Brilliant Branch was used as a freight by-pass around the congested Pittsburgh passenger terminal area. Commuter trains also used the Branch to access the the Valley (Allegheny Branch) and the Conemaugh Line (at UY Tower).
Today, the regular user of the trackage in view is Amtrak. Amtrak uses the wye here to turn the westbound Pennsylvanian trainset so it can head east from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia and New York the next morning. NS will occasionally use this to turn a locomotive.
"Tiny Jaws of Death"®️ "Cairn Terrierists Have Weapons of Mastication"®️ My best little baby girl, Brunhilde Marie, also called Brunie and at 13-1/2 the younger -- and smarter -- of our two cairn terriers. Very human-friendly, she does not cotton well to other dogs and is a stone killer when it comes to vermin. I picked her out from the litter and raised her from a pup after Linda gave her to me to take care of after I had lost my job. Lately she has developed what could be congestive heart failure, but "better living through chemistry" has made her feisty again, c.2021 John M. Hudson | jmhudson1.com
Arrived on Friday and Vaughn was in the ER Saturday night with double pneumonia and congestive heart failure. He gets a heart cath tomorrow and we will see from there.
Recovery in sunny Tucson will be much easier than cloudy, cold Michigan.
And, they've got great medical care here in AZ.

- Daucus carota, whose common names include wild carrot, bird's nest, bishop's lace, and Queen Anne's lace (North America), is a flowering plant in the family Apiaceae, native to temperate regions of Europe and southwest Asia, and naturalized to North America and Australia.
D. carota was introduced and naturalized in North America, where it is often known as "Queen Anne's lace". Both Anne, Queen of Great Britain, and her great grandmother, Anne of Denmark, are taken to be the Queen Anne for which the plant is named. It is so called because the flower resembles lace; the red flower in the center is thought to represent a blood droplet where Queen Anne pricked herself with a needle when she was making the lace.
The flowers are small and dull white, clustered in flat, dense umbels. They may be pink in bud and may have a reddish flower in the centre of the umbel. The lower bracts are three-forked or pinnate, which distinguishes the plant from other white-flowered umbellifers.
As the seeds develop, the umbel curls up at the edges, becomes more congested, and develops a concave surface bird's nest. The fruits are oval and flattened, with short styles and hooked spines. The dried umbels detach from the plant, becoming tumbleweeds.

I need to adjust the color balance of this. This problem often happens when I try to work on images from my laptop rather than my regular desktop computer.

Cades Cove is located in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. Fall is beautiful in the Park, and the mountains surrounding the cove were heavily frosted. I arrived at 8 am and by 10, as usual, the cove was congested with visitors.

Bangkok is one of the world’s most congested cities, with severe traffic problems that can make it a challenge to get around the city during peak rush hours. Whether you’re visiting Bangkok or planning to stay long term, understanding the traffic is key to getting around quickly.
While Bangkok’s traffic is an annoyance, it’s a fairly predictable annoyance. Once you’re familiar with the morning and evening rush hour, specific roads to avoid and alternative transport options such as the BTS and MRT, you’ll be able to get around the city quickly and efficiently.
