Since first constructed in 1975, the University Union has been considered the “living room” of the campus, but technological changes, code requirements and the demand for more space created a much-needed addition and renovation for the building. This 72,000 SF, three-story expansion provides an amenity-rich addition at the heart of the Sacramento State campus with more meeting rooms, student spaces and offices for University functions. Delivered using the University’s innovative Collaborative Design-Build method, this LEED Gold-designed project engaged stakeholders in workshops throughout the design process, ensuring University staff and student expectations were captured.

The design solution gives the building an essential identity in a new main entry with an expansive double height pavilion, outdoor gathering space, and retail to activate the pedestrian zone. A large Starbucks and relocated Peak Adventures retail store with bicycle repair shop, greet the public once inside. A modern Games Room has new pool tables, ping pong, and various video game consoles for students to use between classes. Lounge spaces, divisible conference suites and open offices for Union-specific and ASI-related departments are also included to meet demand.

By creating more permeable and light-filled spaces on the north side and a discernible main entry, the University Union expansion is not only designed to fit demand and meet modern code requirements, it allows the Union to be a beacon for student life on the campus again.

I'd run out of whiteboard markers and the star phone didn't work. It wasn't a good time for Dave to come into the conference room.

Recognizing the need for cooperation and communication among Boards of Accountancy, NASBA sponsors an Annual Meeting in the fall of each year that provides a unique opportunity for State Board members, executive directors and others interested in the profession to discuss freely and candidly the major issues facing state regulation of public accountancy.

The site of NASBA’s 108th Annual Meeting, Dana Point, CA, has been the site of several outstanding NASBA meetings. In this inspiring setting, we will exchange new ideas and consider how to help the Boards protect the public by utilizing the best thinking of regulators, professionals, academics and other interested parties.

Throughout the year, NASBA committees and staff have been engaged in communication with the member Boards to keep information flowing. The Annual Meeting is the capstone of those efforts. Speakers from the Financial Accounting Foundation, American Accounting Association, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and others will join NASBA’s leaders in addressing the major regulatory issues involved in ensuring the Boards’ licensees meet the public’s expectations. Through plenary presentations, regional meetings and informal gatherings, participants will be encouraged to share their views with colleagues from other jurisdictions, and consider the ways in which Accountancy Boards can be responsive to the public’s needs.

My co-workers and I gathered in a conference room at work to watch Obama's inauguration on the big projection screen. We streamed the video live from one of the news sites, but we also had a small black-and-white television on stand by just in case the stream stalled out (which it did a couple of times).

One of our key demands when we designed the 55 Broad space was that we get a conference table which could get "wired". Hidden down the centre of the table were electrical outlets and cat 5 cables. Remember, this was 1997 so no wireless, and Token Ring, not Ethernet.

I took some photos the other day for an event my office was having at the Iowa State Capitol. I ended up liking this image quite a bit, with the focus on my colleague Kevin Fangman through the crowd and across the ornate conference room.

I'm pleased as punch to see this project completed (other than adding a lockable drawer in the empty slot about 1/3 the way down from top. Proper control of the audio/visual system in my office's main committee room has been a LONG time coming!

Small in size this fit-out required a sensitive approach towards the scale of the space. Some of the strategies included hoisting the base-building ceiling [just below 8’] up to 10’ in some cases; incorporating the use of glass to allow transparency and visual continuity in the space; and, the use of a limited palette of warm colours, materials and lighting to minimise visual clutter. The entire room, designed by Perkins Eastman, was a “proof of concept”, with Herman-Miller workstations and computer-controlled LED lights running in all directions. This particular contraption is a small conference space. There is a bench opposite the monitors, not visible in the photos. Who could know to take a fisheye lens to an architectural photo shoot? This module was designed by Matt Taylor of Athenaeum International, Inc.
