At the end of conference Marcie planned to hand the torch to me as the next conference chair, so I had to do schtick for which I planned weeks in advance studying vintage photos of mountain climbers. I wanted an ice ax and croutons, but the rope was the simplest piece of gear to acquire. I already had the ruck sack, WWII army pants and hiking boots circa 1980's. The red top is actually a fisherman's smock from Cornwall.
I invited the crowd to join me in "climbing to new heights to explore new peaks of potential and brain plasticity". There is something funny about the phrase brain plasticity so it got a good laugh. They were already chuckling at 'peaks of potential". I also joked that, though I had big shoes to fill, luckily ADD was an asset when climbing mountains. This was the whole reason I wanted to evoke the vision of a mountain climber. Ever since Kim told me her brother, the famous mountain climber, was ADD. Marcie suggested the theme "Climbing to New Heights" because of the mountains of Colorado.
We also gave out carabiner keychains which I pointed out had a warning on the side that they were not to be used for climbing, but I was sure everyone would find other uses for them.

But first, I have to unfurl my own irony of these gatherings we call “conferences” -traveling sometimes long distances to bland hotels (this has not happened to me!)
