I arrived at the airport and got my boarding pass more than an hour before it even made sense to go through security. I popped my feet up on my rollaway and spent the time reading.
It's the Dad Gene. It fills me with a need to arrive at the airport way, way early for my flight.
Which is not to say getting there so early makes me completely happy. Sometime during Hour Two of fidgeting in a plastic chair at the terminal, part of me becomes a whiny 8-year-old. He demands to know why we had to get here so eeearrrrrlllllyyyyyyyy, when we could have gotten another two hours of sleeeeeeeeep.
That's when I channel my Inner Dad. "You know what's worth than being bored? Being all tense and excited and worried because we're stuck in traffic and we don't know if we're going to make our flight," I say, not even looking up from my "Reader's Digest." "And get your finger out of your ear. That's disgusting."
I've been speaking at the Conference on World Affairs for 14 years. It took me about 12 years before I realized that I could make some simple adjustments to the annual routine to make my life easier. Such as: take a later flight that gets me into Denver at 8:30 PM instead of at 2.
The upside: I get a good night's sleep; I have a proper breakfast and lunch and neither one is prepared at an airport; I travel to Logan via a noon commuter train, and don't have to pay $11 a day for a week's worth of parking; I arrive in Boulder awake, alert, interactive, and ready to go, instead of as a bleary-eyed wreck who's been up since 5:30 AM.
The downside: I miss the welcoming reception.
I'm slightly amazed that it took me so long to compare the length of the list of upsides to the length of the lost of downsides.
The reception is a good chance to meet all of the speakers and renew acquaintances. I'm sorry I keep missing it. But whoof. This new way is sooOOOooo much better.
This summer, web professionals gathered at the Interlink Conference in Vancouver, B.C. to discuss the contemporary practice of web design. Conference organizer Shawn Johnson coordinated these special Scout Books as note-taking tools for attendees, featuring illustrations by conference speakers. Lovely!

For MOSAiC, the Polarstern will froze into and drifted with arctic ice for a full year so researchers could measure conditions in the ocean, sea ice, atmosphere, and biosphere.
