This particular sunset image is also being added to my "Things of the Mormons" set, and perhaps a couple of LDS groups as well, because of the story which accompanies it.
My close friend Barney Madsen is a member of Flickr, where he appears as bmadsen. But because he spends most of his time serving as bishop of a BYU student ward and working as a successful attorney, he doesn't have a lot of time for photography. His father is Truman Madsen, a well-known Church scholar, who has been mentioned elsewhere in my photostream. (See this image, for example.) After each General Conference of the Church, the extended family, plus a few specially invited guests, get together to discuss their impressions of the Conference, and this gathering provides all who are involved with one final spiritual experience to cap what is invariably a wonderful weekend.
I have participated in every one of those post-Conference gatherings since October of 1997, although when I am away from Utah, I take part through a telephone connection with the group. The sound is never good, but merely being able to participate at all is a singular and much-appreciated honor, and if I only really hear 10% of what is said, that 10% is always worth my while.
I was in Utah for both General Conferences in 2005, but decided to remain in Arizona for this one. When Barney called at around 6:30 Arizona time to connect me with the group, I went out into our backyard patio and sat down on the east end of our swimming pool to listen in. I was facing the setting sun, of course, and commented about it to the gathering. While everyone was talking and I was listening, I decided to get my camera and take some pictures; thus, I took this particular sunset image while savoring one of the crowning events of my year. (An hour or so before this photo was taken, I accidentally dropped my precious Nikon D50 and was afraid I had seriously damaged it, but this image suggests that it survived that little ordeal just fine.)
This photo is affectionately dedicated to Barney, Dr. Truman Madsen, and the members of their extended family, who over the years have effectively made me a sort of honorary Madsen as well. Which, in turn, is a privilege I will always cherish.

Greater Manchester Police has just concluded this year’s Operation Protector. The operation is put in place whenever one of the major political parties holds an annual conference in the city.
Chief Superintendent John O’Hare said: “Manchester has been host to the annual Conservative Party Conference since Sunday 29 September 2013.
“This has been a major security operation for Greater Manchester Police which has caused some disruption to residents, visitors and businesses across the city.
“We have worked closely with our partners to ensure that we struck the right balance between security and the day to day life of the City.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank the people of Manchester for their patience and support over the last week or so.”
Next year Manchester will host the Labour Party’s annual conference.
