Conditions could not have been much worse for this one, heavy parcipitation, wind and some mist.

Gotta love how F-15 Drivers test drive their broken gear!

Mount Ngauruhoe is an active volcano in Tongariro National Park here in New Zealand. 2,291m elevation. I have been lucky to climb this amazing mountain in both summer and winter conditions. Although often regarded as a separate mountain, geologically it is a secondary cone of Mount Tongariro. A very special and spiritual spot. Rather than making a more common wide angel landscape shot I decided to experiment with a telephoto lens shot. This created a very different way of seeing and composing the image. Interesting. The gorgeous lighting was changing fast. It was fascinating to watch how the colour of the sky and reflections in the clouds changed from deep red to dark blue over less than 20 minutes.

DBC Class 60 no 60044 at Collingham in horrible conditions with the morning's Lindsay to Kingsbury Tanks.

With track conditions having deteriorated significantly on the former Algoma Central mainline in recent years, CN’s five-days-a-week Hearst to Oba local, L552, now only makes it as far as Mead most days, due to slower run times and the line’s inaccessibility south of this point. Much of the trackage between Hearst and Oba is now restricted to 10 MPH, a far cry from the nearly mile-a-minute running I remember when I rode the Tour of the Line train through here less than a decade ago.

Despite the gloomy autumn weather, the pair of EMD SD60s tasked with this day's train look sharp amongst the golden larch trees as they crest a small grade into Mead, Ont., along the storied (but increasingly tired-looking) tracks of the Black Bear.

In smoky, moody conditions. Taken back in September on my way back to Seattle from Spokane somewhere between Wilbur & Grand Coulee

This early morning we had some misty conditions in the center of the Netherlands. It's always nice to take some pictures with these conditions.

Here's a shot from mid November; it was taken up on Ipstones Edge on a bright sunny morning. On one particular spot near the road that runs along the top side of Ipstones Edge is an old upright stone that stands all alone - it looks so ancient and always fascinates me. It fits in so well with the windswept barren landscape like an anicient monolith. the truth is I guess it used to be part of a gateway at one time, probably dating to the 1600s.

I've been wanting to get a photo of this for ages but have waited for ideal conditions to get this sort of backlit shot and this day I spied my chance. There is a scoop in the ground on one side which allowed me to get underneath it. I used a small aperture (about f22 I think) to get the star burst and then got creative in ps to give it some of my trademark dreaminess. The concept of the image is rooted in the idea of an ancient sun god breathing it's piercing warm rays across this ancient site whilst no one is looking - the title reflects that with Helios, the Greek god of the sun, having the star role.

A memorable evening at Elgol where conditions were constantly changing as Storm Dennis barreled across the Isle of Skye. We were treated to ever changing conditions, including a rising tide, gale force winds, driving rain, hail pellets, snow, grey skies, broken clouds, flat light which was often quickly followed with moments of gorgeous golden hour light.

We were a group of 7 togs dashing about capturing as many images as we could, in conditions we had only dreamed of before. For some reason, a majority of us eventually ended up at the JCB (Joe Cornish Boulder) . . . fortunately we all ‘played well’ together and sharp elbows were rarely needed. In the distance can be seen the snow capped Cuillins.

I flew from Minnesota to spend nearly a week with 5 friends/togs on a winter holiday on Skye. I even got the opportunity to meet and shoot with SkyeWeasel.

This was the end of my first day on Skye, as I was walking back to the car in darkness I thought to myself how lucky I was!

The conditions were very overcast but I waited a little while for a bit of light to shine through the clouds behind me. After this it was off to the Mount for sunset!

Thanks very much for viewing. Have a great weekend :-)

Warm sunlight pours into the Bayou and is greeted by the rising mist. Conditions such as these are so transient. Anticipating the light, maneuvering through the water for a good composition and being set up and ready in time is quite challenging. Feel truly fortunate for having been able to witness and photograph this scene.

As the mist rolled in at Drax, most people put their cameras away, but personally I embraced the atmosphere as a challenge. Plus I'm a huge fan of Colin Gifford, so here's my poor imitation of how Gifford might have approached the conditions.

One of the conditions from the 1996 Union Pacific - Southern Pacific merger was the granting of trackage rights for BNSF on SP's Central Corridor between Sacramento and Denver. Catching a BNSF trackage rights train on the Roseville Subdivision is always a nice change of pace from UP City of Yellow.

Far from the standard train watching locations on Donner is the crossing of the Loch Leven trail just east of Cisco, CA. Here, BNSF 5144 leads the westbound QPVBCJ (H-PVOSTO Provo, UT to Stockton, CA Manifest) proceeds west towards Cisco.

Weather conditions in Hastings were perfect this morning for another long exposure and a seagull also wanted to be a part of the shot as well :)

Conditions have been very good this autumn for spotting lots of different fungi in our woodland and I came across this little cluster looking so fragile on the ground surrounded by fallen leaves. I am not sure what type they are but they do have a detain charm about them don't you think.

Bitter cold weather continues here in Iowa, but all things considered, birds like this little junco are coping quite well. Down in normally tropical Florida, the rare cold conditions there have caused iguanas to come tumbling out of the trees!

Took a trip up to Mt. Baker a month ago and spent the day enduring hordes of mosquitos and flies while hiking about shooting the scenery. This particular day had some stormy, unstable air, and the view of Mt. Shuksan (pictured here) was constantly changing. One minute it was clear as a bell, a few later it was completely hidden from view, and for a few fleeting minutes in between it was half covered with beautiful wispy clouds.

Difficult conditions at Trebarwith yesterday. Mega wind, sea and spray, slippery rocks and my cautious behaviour near such an unpredictable sea at high tide!

Beautiful to just be there!

A typically biiterly cold morning in Glencoe after a very early start (aborted attempt to) shoot sunrise further South at Lochan Nah - Aclaise, but the snow had been falling far too hard to even get out of the car and chance anything there, driving in it wasn't exactly fun either without snow tyres so I had retreated back further North again with empty hands, the heavy snow had yet to reach these parts for today and allowed me 30 minutes or so shooting here before breakfast in very overcast stormy conditions but with some nice light breaking through the cloud in intervals minimal use of filters needed to get a decent shutter speed on the falls.

By the time breakfast was done in the Chlachaig this was completely white.

Leaping Water at Govetts Leap (Govetts Leap Brook in flood during the maelstrom)

We arrived at Govetts Leap lookout for a dawn magic hour photo-shoot but were greeted by heavy rain and white-out conditions. We waited and waited. Moments after we decided to give up and depart, the cloud and rain eased for half-an-hour, affording the opportunity to capture a spectacular scene with dramatic light. The raw images were grey and hazy, but with the wonders of the electronic darkroom, the magic of the scene was brought into existence. For most of the year Govetts Leap Brook is a trickle, but it was a raging thunder during the build-up of the extreme rainfall event. Notice the lesser waterfalls plummeting from the Lycon Plateau in the distance. The following day the national park service closed most of the park as the volumes of water and risk of landslides escalated. Gail Mitchell recently posted a beautiful realistic portrait of the same scene.

15 years ago, the North Pole Express ran up the former New York Central Saginaw branch from Owosso to Chesaning. The train was much smaller in those days, and most of the trip was between 10 and 20 mph. The Saginaw County fairgrounds in Chesaning hosted the North Pole. A few years later, the decision was made to move the North Pole over to Ashley and run up the ex Ann Arbor mainline instead, somewhat due to deteriorating track conditions on the branch north of Oakley. SRI volunteers actually invested a lot of time and money into track work between Oakley and Chesaning in order to continue running 1225 up there, but eventually it became more than they could feasibly do. While the ex AA line is nice, the old NYC was more straight north/south and offered some interesting photos, like the classic Michigan Bean Co elevator in Henderson.

From the very first moment I clapped eyes on this Gary Oak tree at Pipers Lagoon, I wanted it wreathed in fog.

After 11 years of waiting, I finally got the fog I wished for with the added bonus of some lovely afternoon light.

It was a bit of a carnival. I've never seen so many people at Pipers Lagoon, not even in the hottest days of summer.

This was a rare sunny, foggy day in January when people weren't allowed to travel, so where else would they go?

I was lucky enough to be filming a vlog when this rare event which you can watch here youtu.be/vVNUJz7KNb4

We were there at 7:00 in the morning trying to catch a really beautiful atmosphere in the forest but the conditions were horrible...sunny and without fog :(- So we were waiting there for 30 minutes analyzing different spots and taking ideas for future adventures, when suddenly the conditions changed completely. The fog was there to create this fantastic scene. Hope you like it.

Saludos y buena semana.

Listed as UNESCO in 2010, the Zhangye Danxia Landform area is known as “the eye candy of Zhangye”. Many artists admire this masterpiece as it is unbelievably colorful, like a n imaginative oil painting . Zhangye's Danxia landscape has lots of precipitous red cliffs, most of which are several hundred meters high, and multicolored ridges of weathered strata, sometimes stretching to the horizon. These formations, sometimes smooth sometimes sharp, stand out against the greens or grays of the plains , looking grand and magnificent, vigorous and virile.

Across the Danxia landscape zone, a kaleidoscope of numerous red rocky outcrops resemble weird and wonderful shapes like castles, cones, towers ; as well as humans, creatures, birds and beasts. Their peaks peeping through the mist and clouds, produce mirage-like scenery of fantastic mountains and pavilions.

Zhangye 's Danxia was formed by the erosion of red sandstone, forming isolated peaks and steep stratified outcrops. Its special geological structure, combined with long-term desert conditions , freeze-thaw peeling, and wind and water erosion gave rise to its present appearance.

Geologists believe that Danxia topography is formed by folding of layered oceanic crust. Exposed slanting rock layers have different colors, textures, shapes, sizes, and patterns. The combination of differences in density and erosion create towering peaks, cave holes, and stone halls. (Sourced from Internet)

Lovely clear conditions were a surprise for the evening of Friday 15th March. The beautiful moon was hard to ignore so I captured this image.

The waxing moon was 36% illuminated when I imaged it and was in the constellation of Taurus.

The centrally peaked crater Theophilus near the moon's centre is particularly dramatically illuminated as it emerges from the lunar terminator into lunar dawn. Early light just catching the central peak and part of the crater's walls.

Also the walls of crater Proclus (with its associated rays), towards the top of the image and near the Mare Crisium, are catching the sun's light strongly.

Proclus is second in albedo only to crater Aristarchus.

Imaged with an Esprit 120ED and a ZWO 2600MC camera.

After dodging clouds for well over a month and despite some bad seeing conditions we were finally able to image Comet C/2022 E3 ZTF on 1/22/2023 this past weekend from Grand Mesa Observatory.

The Comet is heading towards its closest approach to Earth on February 1st, 2023 and should increase in brightness up to this point. It is currently faintly visible to the naked eye from a dark non-light polluted location. The Moon does complicate things a bit and will be bright in the sky and up most of the night in the coming days until it's at it reaches full Moon on Feb 6th. After the 6th the Moon will rise later in the evening giving the opportunity to see the Comet clearer the second week of February in the early evening hours. It will also be located high up in the night sky close to zenith which will also make it easier to observe and photograph.

Comet C/2022 E3 ZTF will head past some interesting celestial objects in the night sky making a close pass by the bright star Capella on Feb 6; then moves through the Constellation Auriga Feb 7-9th; it also makes a close approach to Mars on Feb 10th where it will be a bit over 1 degree or about two full moon widths away from Mars in the night sky. Some very interesting photo and observing opportunities to look forward to, I hope at Grand Mesa Observatory and everyone else will have clear skies for some of them!

The appearance of this comet is interesting as well with its tails splayed out in opposite directions caused by its orientation in the solar system relative to our vantage point here on Earth. A very good explanation for this comes from Ian Whittaker a senior physics lecturer in physics at Nottingham Trent University in the U.K. who had this to say in a Newsweek article recently released:

"The neutral particles come off in a cone behind the comet as it moves—a bit like being behind a big truck on the motorway while it's raining, all the excess water hits whatever is directly behind it."

"The charged particles will do the same unless there are any electric or magnetic fields nearby. The sun itself has a magnetic dipole (like the Earth) and has a magnetic field flowing out into the solar system. So the charged particles coming off of the comet are picked up by this magnetic field and sent directly away from the sun (anti-sunward)."

This forms the traditional backward-facing tail streaming out from behind a comet.

"The third comet tail is made up of the neutral particles but is not actually traveling towards the sun, it is just the relative position of the comet, Earth, and sun," Whittaker said.

He continued: "If we go back to the analogy of the truck traveling on a lot of surface water, the spray comes out and mostly goes behind, but in a slight cone shape. If we were now in front and looked backward, we would not see the main spray hitting the car behind but a slight amount either side of the truck where the edge of the cone is. The apparent third comet tail is the same thing, we are seeing neutral particles flowing away from the comet in a cone and from where we are on the Earth we just see both edges of this cone so it looks like two tails when it is really one."
