THE LINNEAN SOCIETY OF LONDON, CONVERSAZIONE VISIT TO THE CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY BOTANIC GARDEN, JULY 16TH 2011 (4 of 32)

Plaque inside the main entrance of the new Sainsbury Laboratory explaining the architectural context and concept of the building.

Click on picture for more readable view, or go to 'view to all sizes' under 'Actions' top left.

The further notes below are based partly on the Garden's website, and on a short report of this visit written by Vaughan Southgate & Brian Rosen (in press November 2011).

NOTE ON THE BUILDING

The Sainsbury Laboratory was designed by Stanton Williams and was opened on April 27, 2011. It has 'high-tech' specifications and houses the Herbarium, a seminar room, meeting spaces, support areas, and laboratory areas for 120 botanical staff, as well as a new Garden Cafe for the public. Further information is given on this explanatory plaque.

PS (October 2012): This building has just won the Stirling Prize (for good British architecture): bit.ly/UVf5mD

NOTE ON THE GARDEN

The garden is set in about 16 hectares (40 acres) of land containing about 8,000 different species of plants and trees from all over the world. The garden opened in 1846 and succeeded an older, smaller garden elsewhere in the city. Initially (1831), the University funded development of only the western half, the layout of which is credited to the first Garden Curator, Andrew Murray, in consultation with Reverend John Stevens Henslow, and is now a Grade II* Listed Landscape. Well-known as a mentor of Charles Darwin, Henslow was an all-round scientist, who was Professor of Botany in the University from 1825 to 1861. He had firm ideas about variation and the nature of species, and his garden planting scheme was conceived to illustrate this. So in an almost literal sense, the garden sowed the seeds of Darwin’s later thinking on these topics in the development of his own evolutionary ideas. The planting schemes were also laid out, according to plant systematics of the time, on a silt and sand soil, and this soil lies on chalk and flint. Owing to the low rainfall; extensive mulching is carried out, minimising the amount of watering necessary to keep the plants healthy. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides are used to an absolute minimum.

I had to pick a special concept that represented my generation, and of course, I picked Facebook, and how teens are addicted and how they post really personal information, and I had to show that in a photo/photos, and also had to write a story about it.

The Peugeot EX1 Concept is an electric vehicle made by Peugeot and presented in the Paris 2010 autoshow. It has two engines that provides 250 kW (340 hp) and 480 Nm of torque.

It has broken 6 speed records for a vehicle weighing less than 1000 kg. Set from a standing start, the EX1 set the following times: 1/8 mile (8.89sec), 1/4 mile (14.4s), 500m (16.81s), 1/2 mile (23.85s), 1000m (28.16s), and 1 mile (41.09s). It set a 0-60 mph run in 3.55sec and an overall top speed of 161 mph.

Haven't had this much fun sketching on a project in a long time. the company (confederate motorcycles) was said to embrace a pure, minimalist, and rogue approach to design and all their products have a bare machined aesthetic. I really like drawing machined parts and very harsh, purely functional forms, so this was right up my alley.

For this image I used a pair of shoes to show the concept of reflection. It was taken in tungsten lighting. I tried to show reflection without using a mirror. I think this is a good representation of the concept of reflection.

Lately I've been challenging myself more and more to consider why it is I make art, and to put more thought into things than "oh! this is pretty". For me, photography is too often just seen as a snapshot, or just a totally honest interperitation of what someone saw. This concept has become the product of this thinking, as well as stong influences from Joseph Turner. These are more of a test of the concept that I made in photoshop using old landscapes I had, but in the future I plan on doing most of the distortion in camera. As always, I'm interested to hear other's thoughts, opinions, and questions. Thanks!

The iPhone augmented reality applications that are all the rage are gimmicky and really not as useful as a good infographic / interface in most cases.

Here's a quick 5-minute photo composite of a place where augmented reality would be useful. We have heads-up displays in a lot of cars these days; here's a visual processing system that makes automotive navigation way easier — just highlight the road they're supposed to be on.

A client of mine sells knives and has asked me to photograph a few for his online sales. So I am trying a few techniques in practice to see how they come out. This is my second attempt. The first attempt is not worthy of public viewing!!

Strobist info: behind the knife, under the board is a 430ex speedlite with a red gel on it shooting on an angle at the wall. Camera right is an alien bee 800 with a brolly (shoot through umbrella in case I am saying this wrong). Camera left is a 580exii with a yellow gel, this light was originally placed as a rim light. Totally the wrong spot for it and did not get what I wanted, but the oranges picked up the light slightly and I was happy with that. The speedlites were fired by the Canon ste2 and the alien bee by wire.

With the new BMW Z4 and Bentley GTC Speed both bowing today, along with this new Volkswagen Concept BlueSport, Detroit is, oddly enough, becoming the show for convertibles.

But the Volkswagen concept has a special twist that appeals to environmentally conscious sports-car enthusiasts: a Clean Diesel engine, mounted mid-ship.

The BlueSport Concept likely prefaces a long rumored—and headed to production, according to some sources—roadster based on the Concept-R, first shown more than five years ago at the Frankfurt auto show.

The silver exterior and orange fabric convertible top formed an interesting contrast with the black interior and looked anything but conservative. Wheel wells are flared dramatically outward, and large air intakes just behind the doors signal its mid-engine configuration. The interior features a matte-black look, with an instrument panel that’s rather simple in layout. One-piece seatbacks hint of racing, and as with several other concepts here at the show, a touch screen interface that controls “all information and entertainment functions.”

Volkswagen says in a release from the press preview that the Roadster would be built in Germany.

With a light weight of only 2640 pounds, the BlueSport promises to be nimble and fast. A 180-bhp Clean Diesel TDI engine brings it to 62 mph in just 6.6 seconds, according to the Wolfsburg automaker, and it has a top speed of 140 mph. A six-speed DSG gearbox does the shifting, with power going to the rear wheels.

With regard to those who might think diesels are a bit dirty, the BlueSport is fitted with a NOx downstream catalytic converter to keep it especially clean—and, likely to pass U.S. emissions without the need for AdBlue. Fuel economy rates about 55 miles per gallon overall, VW says, with a driving range of up to 710 miles. The BlueSport also incorporates an Eco mode, bringing an automatic start-stop system as well as energy regeneration to cut fuel consumption in city driving.

Volkswagen is, already, more than a decade late to the roadster party. But rather than cloning any of the existing models, Volkswagen has struck out in a new direction with the mid-engine design and a clear recognition of diesels as a performance powetrain.

The BlueSport has two small cargo spaces—one that’s 4 cubic feet in front and another that’s just about 2.5 cubic feet in back.VW states that it’s “enough for working documents or an extended weekend trip for two.” Two minimalists, that is.

At about 157 inches long, with a 95.7-inch wheelbase, the lightweight roadster looks poised to land somewhere between the Lotus Elise and Porsche Boxster in purpose—though perhaps closer to the much-missed Toyota MR2 in market position.

With Volkswagen talking recently about reviewing its portfolio and potentially trimming its future plans, according to some sources, will it make it to production? We'll just have to wait and see.
