Don't talk to me, I'm concentrating!

This beauty is one of a pair that i photographed while sitting atop Estructura I at the Calakmul Archeological site in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve. S/He was fighting off some flies that were 'buggin' him.

I just found these Thailand slides tucked away in a box. I haven't seen any of them in years, and am having so much fun scanning them in.

SGW shows some intense concentration during a recent shoot. She is becoming a good model.

Strobist: AB 800 with standard reflector camera left and high at 1/3 power. AB 800 with standard reflector camera right and slightly behind the subject. Large silver reflector camera right for fill, mounted on a stand. No light on the background; I like the 'classic' shadow.

Don't bug him now. Taking shots like that takes years of being around the teams so they let you stick your camera in the car moments before the start. Arnd was espeacially easy to work with, as a) we both speak German, and b) any publicity is welcome when you run in a team without much in terms of resources.

German concentration camp WW2-Holocaust-Poland.

Location of Majdanek on the outskirts of Lublin in present day Poland. Known for Mass Murder during the Holocaust

Location Near Lublin, General Government (German-occupied Poland). Operated by SS-Totenkopfverbände

Original use: Forced labor

Operational: October 1, 1941 – July 22, 1944

Inmates: Jews, Poles

Killed Estimated 78,000

Liberated by Soviet Union, July 22, 1944

Majdanek, or KL Lublin, was a German concentration and extermination camp built and operated by the SS on the outskirts of the city of Lublin during the German occupation of Poland in World War II. Although initially purposed for forced labor rather than extermination, the camp was used to kill people on an industrial scale during Operation Reinhard, the German plan to murder all Jews within their own General Government territory of Poland. The camp, which operated from October 1, 1941, until July 22, 1944, was captured nearly intact, because the rapid advance of the Soviet Red Army during Operation Bagration prevented the SS from destroying most of its infrastructure, and the inept Deputy Camp Commandant Anton Thernes failed in his task of removing incriminating evidence of war crimes. Therefore, Majdanek became the first concentration camp discovered by Allied forces.[3] Also known to the SS as Konzentrationslager (KL) Lublin, Majdanek remains the best-preserved Nazi concentration camp of the Holocaust.

THANK YOU TO ALL MY FRIENDS FOR HELPING TO MAKE THE LOSS OF MY OLDEST DAUGHTER, FIONA, EASIER TO BEAR! YOU HAVE ALL MADE SO MUCH DIFFERENCE THE LAST 13 DAYS! I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH.

Yesterday, 15 January 2015, I called in at Fish Creek Park yet again for some fresh air and, hopefully, a friend or two. It was around 3:30 pm when I arrived there - and the park felt strangely empty after all the activity down there this past week or 10 days. There was nobody in sight, except for one very distant photographer. When he got close, I asked him if he had found the little Northern Pygmy-owl. He hadn't, and he said he had been talking with three other photographers earlier and it seems that no one saw the owl yesterday. Really hope it hasn't moved away.

"The Northern Pygmy-Owl may be tiny, but it’s a ferocious hunter with a taste for songbirds. These owls are mostly dark brown and white, with long tails, smoothly rounded heads, and piercing yellow eyes. They hunt during the day by sitting quietly and surprising their prey. As a defensive measure, songbirds often gather to mob sitting owls until they fly away. Mobbing songbirds can help you find these unobtrusive owls, as can listening for their call, a high-pitched series of toots." From AllAboutBirds.

The weather forecast has changed overnight. Last night, it showed snow for today, but instead now shows a chance of a shower for this afternoon. It's a balmy 5C at the moment - if only every winter could be like this one! Much deserved after last winter (2013/2014), which was unbelievably long and brutal. Tomorrow and the next day, Saturday and Sunday are expected to be mainly sunny. As of last night, Sunday was expected to have sun, cloud, snow and rain. My car is gleamingly clean and all set for Sunday, after being caked with dried mud for the last two or three months. I'm hoping it stays that way. Not too likely, though, as I do have to go out again and the roads are messy. Five minutes and the car is sprayed with filthy water. After Sunday, it won't matter.
