Charles Babbage's Difference Engine.
This difference engine was built for a wealthy collector in America by a museum in Britain. They built two; one for their museum and one for the collector. This one is on loan to the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA.
We saw a demonstration of the Engine; it's quite beautiful.
I had to remove this today....from my wife's computer desk drawer. Even though it is non-poisonous it will still a bit of a thrill to catch it and then turn it loose outside in the neighbors field.
My wife is sitting over there looking around her feet for it again even as I'm posting this. She just doesn't trust that he won't be back.

The LGP-30 is the computer that Mel, a Real Programmer used. Perhaps one of the first curmudgeonly programmers, he refused to use Royal McBee's optimising assembler to write machine code because it did not account for the rotational speed of the computer's drum memory.
