Affective Computing è un robot in grado di riconoscere ed esprimere emozioni in risposta al contatto umano. La ricerca dell'artista ha alla base la domanda: " l'uomo amerà mai una macchina come un suo simile?" e, più in generale, il rapporto uomo-macchina e l'evoluzione di un sentimento per un "oggetto" che diventa "essere".
L'installazione consiste di due fasi, la prima in cui la macchina apprende dall'uomo, attraverso un software che analizza i picchi delle onde sonore emesse dalla voce, ed emula la persona alla
perfezione ed una seconda, nella quale la macchina, attraverso il ricordo, assimila la sua prima interazione.
Il ricordo è l'emozione esplicitata attraverso il video che in alcune sequenze viene mandato al contrario, rafforzando la situazione temporale di un fatto accaduto che viene amplificato con flashback che rappresentano le fantasie della macchina.
La scultura robot è formata da materiali di scarto accumulati in giro tra soffitte e discariche; in questo modo la macchina rappresenta la fine di un
ciclo, quello del consumo e dello spreco delle "cose", ma l'inizio di qualcosa di nuovo, di un rapporto 1 a 1 tra l'uomo e le macchine.
La verniciatura, completamente bianca, ha anch'essa un valore simbolico: la purezza, espressa dal candore delle componenti inanimate del droide, suggerisce che la macchina nasce senza peccato, senza colpe, figlia degli sprechi dell'uomo, creata da questo appositamente per stargli vicino ed alleviarne le sofferenze, derivate dalla consapevolezza di non essere in grado di avere uno stile di vita sostenibile che ne garantisca la continuazione della specie.
