A late 1970's photo of R&G Wilcox's Holman Compressor at their Oundle works. One of the first jobs every morning was to start this beast up, a task well remembered if any former employees ever see these photos!. It was in continual use from 1972 until 1993 when a Hydrovane was installed, however this machine was retained as a standby until the works closed in 1995.

At the rear of one of the Blondin winding enginehouses at Pen-yr-Orsedd slate quarry stands this Ingersoll-Sergeant piston-valve compressor dating from the 1890s.

The Ingersoll-Sergeant piston.valve compressor was introduced in about 1891 and was distinguished by the method of admitting air to the cylinder, it being drawn in down a hollow piston tail-rod. The piston itself was hollow and provided with internal inlet valves. The idea was to accelerate the operation of the inlet valves by utilising the reversal of the piston at the end of each stroke, thus improving the volumetric efficiency of the compressor, and to reduce the clearance volume in the cylinder to permit the development of high pressures in a single stage. This example was made in the United States to a design of which production ceased in 1900.

Originally powered by a steam engine, the electric motor that provided drive after 1906 can be seen in the background.

For sale a really nice Bostitch 2 HP 4.5 gal industrial air compressor in excellent condition, rarely used. $150

As a contrast to the centrifugal compressor seen earlier, here is a large axial flow compressor disk from a Boeing 747 engine. Three quarters of the air flowing through this fan directly provides thrust, only the remaining air is mixed with fuel and passes through the rest of the jet engine

Its amazing what you can find , or see when you really look at something, I have passed this building countless times in the last 20 yrs of working here and I never took the time to realy SEE. This is part of the compressor house and it looks GREEN for some reason ? I love all the pipe work and the shapes they create.

This is part of the compressor house and it looks like a small work shop has been set up. The over head crane is a beauty !

SKL681X is currently off road due to a prop shaft oil leak, but we've started using her as a generator/compressor. This helps keep her engine in use while she's having the work done. Here she is assisting Nuw the Titan (NUW553Y) who had a flat tyre. This set up is ideal for locations that don't have access to an air supply. The air line is run from the gearbox supply (this not being needed as she's VOR). We're currently looking into installing this onto a roadworthy vehicle but with a splitter valve so it can do the gearbox or external supply at the flick of a switch. This set up delivers 95lb per square inch with the pressure tap opened up. Obviously the gearbox operates at a lower pressure so it would have to be turned down before being reconnected. Most bus tyres are around 115lb per square inch so this set up only gets you out of trouble, it's not a permanent fix.

I ran across these photos on my old ThinkPad a few days ago.

A rack of refrigeration compressors at a supermarket. This is what keeps things cool and frozen. This type of equipment is located either at the rear, on the side or on the roof of a store. Pipes send the refrigeration to wherever it's needed; reach in cases, deli cases, produce cases, tub cases, ice machines, freezer cases, ect. The compressors kick on and off as needed in a somewhat random order. A rack can still keep things cool even if a couple of compressors fail.... Depending on how many compressors total on the rack.

This is the type equipment I used to work on. I think I spent more time on the road than working. I still do HVAC/R and electrical but I don't have to live on the road anymore and work long long hours.

This was a junky car at the install bay at best buy but its trunk had more value than the car itself

Railfan trip on the Providence and Worcester (plus a bit of Northeast Corridor) at the start of fall foliage time. A lot of shots through windows that could have used a bit of cleaning, but beautiful scenery and a good time was had by all.

Compressor expansion in a station is a common event. Notice the sound attenuation in the ceiling. IVS was able to reproduce the same ventilation package from the original build. IVS has an extensive archive of jobs that have been sold since the companies was started.
