This bucket of soil started life as (non-meat) kitchen waste. After six months or so in a pile with occasional turnings of soil and shredded newspaper, it goes back to the garden. A satisfying domestic activity!
I haven't bought a bag of "topsoil" in years!

Using an old corn crib conveyor to build a compost windrow. Once the windrow is done we will use a manure spreader to blend all the materials and add water as necessary. As a note it takes about 24 hours for the material to heat up to about 155F
If you're willing to dull your lawn mower blade a little then don't be afraid to run over twigs. These make for great spacers in your compost pile which are crucial for it to be successful.
Mamuthones e Issohadores di Mamoiada
Fra le manifestazioni del costume popolare della Sardegna la più significativa e la più ricca di fascino e di ricordi arcaici è quella de “SOS MAMUTHONES” e “SOS ISSOHADORES” di Mamoiada (Nu), due figure che si esibiscono insieme ma sono ben distinte, caratterizzate sia dal diverso abbigliamento che dal modo di muoversi.
L’abbigliamento del Mamuthòne comprende attualmente l'abito in velluto scuro, la mastruca nera (casacca di pelle ovina caratteristica dei pastori sardi) chiamata sas peddes, le scarpe in pelle conciate a mano dette sos hòsinzos; sul volto porta sa visera, una maschera nera antropomorfa, sul capo il berretto sardo (coppola) ed il fazzoletto del vestiario femminile (su mucadore) che avvolge visera e berretto. Sul dorso del Mamuthòne, legato da una serie di cinghie in cuoio con un complesso sistema di ancoraggio, è sistemato un pesante mazzo di campanacci di varia misura mentre un altro carico più piccolo di campanelle bronzee è collocato sul davanti all’altezza dello sterno e dello stomaco.
L’insieme dei campanacci e sonagli viene chiamato sa càrriga (letteralmente vuol dire un peso, un carico). Il peso complessivo di tutta l’attrezzatura si aggira sui 25 chili, ma non è solo il peso quello che fa faticare i componenti di questo straordinario gruppo bensì la “morsa” delle cinghie in pelle, ben strette tra le spalle e la gabbia toracica che rendono difficile la respirazione. Infatti, a fine esibizione, le spalle dei partecipanti sono spesso segnate da varie ecchimosi. Una delle doti richieste per fare il Mamuthòne è la resistenza alla fatica.
I Mamuthònes sono accompagnati dagli Issohadores, portatori di soha, una lunga fune ora in giunco ma che prima era di cuoio pesante. L’Issohadore non porta ne maschera nera ne campanacci, il suo abbigliamento è diverso da quello del Mamuthòne e viene indicato a Mamoiada come “veste’e turcu” (vestito da turco). L’abbigliamento ora comprende: sul capo la nera berritta sarda legata al mento da un fazzoletto variamente colorato, larghi pantaloni e camicia di tela bianchi, sopraccalze di lana nera, il corpetto rosso del costume tradizionale maschile, a tracolla una cinghia in pelle e stoffa dove sono appuntati piccoli sonagli, uno scialle, di solito scuro con bellissimi ricami, legato alla vita con la parte variopinta che scende lungo la gamba sinistra. Ultimamente, da parte dell’associazione Pro-Loco, è stato ripristinato l’uso della visera crara (maschera) per gli Issohadores. Questa visera è chiara, dai lineamenti gentili e veniva indicata come maschera “de Santu” o “de Santa” o ancora maschera “Limpia” (pulita). I Mamoiadini affermano che senza Mamuthones e Issohadores non c’è Carnevale il che vuole significare che è questa la manifestazione più importante, il simbolo del Carnevale e segno di allegria e tempi propizi.
La sfilata dura dal pomeriggio fino alla tarda sera, Mamuthones e Issohadores mangiano e bevono poco perché l’esibizione richiede sforzo e le cinghie dei campanacci comprimono il torace o forse perché, dice qualche studioso, in principio digiunavano come negli antichi misteri.
Quella dei Mamuthones e Issohadores non pare una carnevalata ma da più l’idea di una cerimonia solenne vuoi per la taciturnità e compostezza dei partecipanti, vuoi per il loro procedere ordinato come in una processione. Il passo per avanzare e scuotere i campanacci quasi fa pensare ad una danza, «una processione danzata» come l’ha definita l’etnologo Raffaello Marchi che per primo, negli anni ‘40, ha osservato molto da vicino questa manifestazione.
Il gruppo è composto tradizionalmente da 12 Mamuthones e 8 Issohadores.

Delicati orecchini composti da monachella a lobo a forma di piccolissima foglia di vite in pasta polimerica oro sulla quale ho realizzato dei decori floreali, in tecnica petalo a petalo, color bianco sporco. Solo sul lato opposto alla decorazione ho inserito dei pezzi di foglia argento e pigmento bianco.Ho creato il grappolo con rondelle sfaccettate in cristallo color ghiaccio sfumato grigio.

Short Description: A book of 17 photographs taken of my compost caddy whenever I found the contents interesting because of the colours or composition of elements or both. The photographs were taken with natural light from a skylight which gives a variation in the speed and aperture used. This information is recorded on the facing page with date of capture. The camera used was always a Sigma DP2 with Foveon sensor.

Finger Lakes Food/Flower Gardens
We found a source of pallets for our compost, Stu got these for a super good price.
Finally got a chance to try out the 'new' screener. The compost is still frozen in the middle so it was difficult to get a full bucket of 'post. We had to adjust the offset weights to get the vibration but it works very well now. The motor runs at just a hair above idle, any faster and it smooths itself out. We had to put up some plywood due to wind.
I tossed out the old plastic compost bin I kept on my counter; it might have been attracting ants. Until I can get another container, I am using an old plastic drink pitcher that has a lid.
Just finished my triple-bin compost bins. Used cedar fence boards and 2x4s. The mesh lid (open-able) keeps the birds and squirrels out. The front panel is removable for digging.
Fallen leaves make for a wonderful addition to your compost pile as they contribute as a brown trimming or brush which will eventually be totally decomposed by microbes.
I'm in a compost class. Yeah I actually get credits for it and everything. This is an experiment where we are comparing two different bulking agents, wood chips vs straw. Here we are using a manure spreader to mix up the compost in an enclosed bin
started with green kitchen scraps and dry grass. 4:1 brown/carbon:green/nitrogen. A few weeks of adding more kitchen scraps, turning, and dialing in the moisture level has produced very rich results. This is a 32 gallon bin and is about half full of compost so far. There are a lot of larger diameter sticks that are not breaking down, but i believe they enhance aeration. 10mm holes on the sides, top, and bottom about every 10cm.

The sun is shining and it finally feels like summer has officially arrived. Just in time for festival season! Now, if you haven't been following so far then where exactly have you been? Anyway, a brief recap, we went down to Somerset to paint some boards for Pootopia who provide toilets at festivals. They have hundreds of compostable toilets and are beautifying them with some artwork on boards which fit into the toilet doors. Which is where we came in. We set ourselves a somewhat ambitious target of completing 40 boards over the weekend. Despite working just about as hard as we could we only managed a final tally of 32 completed boards (with 7 left just as backgrounds and one MIA). Not too shabby if i say so myself. The hard part was trying to make it so they didn’t all look too similar.
From being a board we were messing about on to actually becoming something I liked was quite an odyssey for 'Hepcat' here. I especially like his id-iom neck tattoo. Bad to the bone...

We are avid recyclers. Every non-meat food scrap ends up in this compost heap. It will be quite a pile come spring.

About 40% leaves; the rest is kitchen recyling, garden stuff, prunings, grass clippings, probably a little soil and whatever else I think I can compost. This compost has been brewing for three years . I was able to get ten wheelbarrow loads from this bin. We have seven in total; this was the largest one.
