The four-bin compost pile has compost at various stages of decomposition. Moveable signs hung on the front of each bin tell which stage the compost in that bin has reached.

Acacia and Calliandra branches tied and dried to make compost.

Just set up the vermicomposter at the farm. So many more mouths to feed now.

Built a compost heap containment device out of lumber from the "junk barn". Old fencing, decking, gates and pallets make up the lumber used. Added a yee haa horseshoe for effect.

we got this composter today and i am gonna get it started with some fallen leaves and yard stuff, and add some food waste--veggie peels, fruit peels, egg shells, recycled paper products + more!

After three weeks in the first composter, the compost is moved here where special worms turn the remnants of fruits, vegetables, and bones into dirt.

1. Too hot, too much nitrogen. Add more carbon materials like the sawdust and dried weeds.

 

2. Too cold, not enough nitrogen. Add more nitrogen-rich materials like manure and green weeds. Better yet, pee on the compost stack to help activate it.

 

...today’s lesson was a great illustration of INFORMATION vs. CONCEPT.

I tried my (naive) hand at fertilizing this poor dying plant with coffee grounds and rabbit droppings (two things produced in abundance in this house). What we got were these mystery mushrooms.

Two days after I made a compost heap out of old yew shrubs, sawdust and chicken manure the Tel-Tru thermometer indicates that all is well inside the pile.

Nicholas Parenteau, a CUSO Cooperant, collects dirt for the compost pile on the NEED-Burma model organic farm near Chiang Mai. This farm was set up by the NGO to teach organic farming principles to farmers from Burma, many of whom have lost traditional farming knowlege due to strong state control of crops, fertilizers and pesticides.

 

NEED-Burma is the Network for Environment and Economic Development, a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization that operates out of its head office in Chiang Mai, Thailand. NEED has been in operation since March of 2006. They are an inclusive network that is non-ethnic specific, with the mission: to work towards strengthening Burmese civil society so that all the people of Burma may benefit from the practice of endogenous and holistic development strategies, based on economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable ideas.
