Compost extract. The extractor uses water and air to concentrate living biology in compost into liquid that can be used in sprayers, seeders, and other equipment to jump start soil biology. Shawn Preputin, Larry Johnson, and Alec McIntosh, farmers, create compost extract that is applied to their crop fields to bolster soil microbes and improve soil health. Hill County, MT; June 2022
We found hundreds of worms under a broken compost bin in our community garden in Cambridge. We observed carefully how they were clumped in fairly wet areas of heavy-ish organic material that was infused with lots of straw. It smelled great so we knew the worms and the system were happy. We brought them home and arranged them in a bin, trying to maintain the "feel" and smell of the ecosystem we took them out of.
I needed to move the compost heap from one side of the garden to the other, in order to dig up the flags next to the bench.
I tried shoving it and working it, but in the end, it was easier to shove it over, slide the plastic free, put it where it needed to go, and then re-fill it with the compost, which had been lying about on the floor.

We dug up compost from the woods in back and sifted them into this wagon. I mixed it with last year's potting soil. The white container is for strawberries.
I originally bought this bin and named it "Yard Waste" because my city used to have free curbside recycling of such things. With the recent budget cuts, they stopped that but still offer free regular trash pickup. Rather than put my yard waste in with the trash that ends up in the landfill, where it turns into methane gas, I'm attempting to turn this bin into a mini home composter by drilling holes into it for aeration.
Today I spent about half an hour digging over the compost & wheel barrowing it to the greenhouse. Not much fun with a wheel barrow that has a flat tyre!
These utensils are made of either a sugar or corn-based plastic, so they will break down and decompose in any composting program or in a landfill. SeaWorld and SeaWorld's Aquatica use these, along with paper straws. Now, if only someone could talk some sense into them about wasting food.
This home built machine uses a concrete mixer and screen to separate the large and fine materials after the compost is finished. Only the fine materials will be used in the extractor. Marni Thompson, NRCS soil health specialist, examines crop roots where compost extract is applied in the field. Notice soil sticking to roots showing the formation of glomalin, a sugar that helps to glue soil aggregates together creating stable soils that are able to infiltrate and store more water. Last of the flowering tulips and residue of this week's vegetable, fruit, and coffee consumption are relegated to the compost bin.
I built this enclosure for my compost heap out of these ceramic things I found in somebody's parking lot.
Mixing compost tea with our Black Gold - finished, cured home-turned compost - to brew overnight. Not appetizing to you and me, but I swear I see the plants in the garden perking up and salivating impatiently for it!

I made a thing. While not exactly fine woodworking, it is wood, and it should work fine. Lynda seems happy. Those front slats just lift out, so don't worry, she's not trapped in there.
Everything from the Tomato & Pepper Garden is in this compost pile along with some leaves and existing compost...
