I take my slowly thawing compost over to Kerry's for further decomposition... at least, until the City gets municipal composting for those of us living in higher density housing.

Deti Picasso

Arménia / Rússia

Festival Músicas do Mundo Sines 2007

21 Julho 2007, Porto Covo, 00h30

XXI.

I have just made some improvements to my compost heap. I added pallets to the sides so that I can pile it even higher than before. I got the pallets for free. Because of the spaces between the slats, I tacked on some scrap plywood to keep the leaves/compost material from escaping. The base is four foot lengths of 4 inch by four inch treated lumber. Off to the right you notice my auxiliary composting area. This is site of a former outdoor barbeque from the 1960s and there is a cement patch on the ground. This makes it easy to use a shovel to dig up my finished product which is deep black compost.

I put all sorts of food waste from the kitchen into the compost and leaves I rake from the yard. Also garden waste. We put much less garbage at the streetside pick up than other residents on our street.

We emptied out half of the black gold from our two worm beds this

morning. Various plants and trees around the property were showing

discoloration. In less than a hour we had buried little stashes or

simply liquified and poured the compost our worms had been breaking

down for weeks.

We found hundreds of worms under a broken compost bin in our community garden in Cambridge. We observed carefully how they were clumped in fairly wet areas of heavy-ish organic material that was infused with lots of straw. It smelled great so we knew the worms and the system were happy. We brought them home and arranged them in a bin, trying to maintain the "feel" and smell of the ecosystem we took them out of.

I needed to move the compost heap from one side of the garden to the other, in order to dig up the flags next to the bench.

I tried shoving it and working it, but in the end, it was easier to shove it over, slide the plastic free, put it where it needed to go, and then re-fill it with the compost, which had been lying about on the floor.
