We thought a compost bin was a good idea, till the javelinas (wild collared peccaries) discovered it...No we have a critter fence to exclude them from most of our gardens, except when someone forgets to close a gate!

The goji bed has been given its compost mulch

When out kitchen scrap bucket (in our kitchen) is filled, we empty it outside in the compost bin. This is what we had today.

There were two of these on the lid of my compost bin, only emptied earlier in the day. About the size of ladybirds I don't know the species, there are a vast number of these, beetles being one of the most successful insect families.

Nearly completed rotating composter. The gray material is above-ground swimming pool liner, formed into a cylinder with heavy aluminum and lots of pop rivets. Its axle is chain link fence post with bearings of Schedule 80 PVC plumbing pieces, aluminum tubing, polyethelyene pipe, and 1/2 inch stainless steel bolts.

Ingredienti

250 g circa petti di tacchino [ricetta orig: 140 g petti di pollo + 4 cosce di pollo]

g 140 composta di fichi fioroni [ricetta orig: confettura di fichi]

g 120 panna fresca

g 60 brodo vegetale

prezzemolo [ricetta orig: maggiorana]

olio extravergine d'oliva

sale e pepe

4 fette di pane [ricetta orig: g 200 focaccia]

Preparazione

Despite the recent freezing temperatures at night, the garden compost is holding steady at a toasty 97 degrees. The orchard compost is about 80. We're working on that. The temps have me thinking more about the outdoor shower.

Residents were encouraged to drop off post-Halloween pumpkins on Nov. 4. Some 3,300 pounds of moldering orange flesh were fed into the composter for a possible after-life in parks landscaping.

(and accompanying toilet paper). I figured that people would be curious, so I took a picture of the chalet's composting toilet. The hole is covered by two plastic flaps; when you sit down those flaps go down and open the hole. The sawdust on the left goes in when you finish. The liquid and the solids are separated, and when each container is full, it's dumped somewhere in the forest (we didn't have to do this in the week I was there).

Bessie and City are quite happy with the fact they got to help me rake the backyard. They think they get to ride to the community compost pile and help unload. I told them after what they did to my rake they might just be left there. They started out quite nice, just exploring the area I had raked with City ocassionally picking up a stray stick, but it changed with both of them attacking the rake and breaking off several tines.

Now, add worms. Home.

Windrow composting area.

This morning there was a funny smell in the house. Our neighbour farmer started to spread his cow manure. We joined him and worked (and the next couple of days) in our garden and spread our own stable compost.

This photo shows our home compost piles that exhibit various states of decomposition. The bowl is filled with the food scraps on their way to the pile on the right. The right hand pile is our active pile, while the pile on the left if our finished pile from which I was extracting compost for the garden. Notice that the pile is infused with fine roots from the nearby trees -- they have been using the nutrients faster than I can extract them!

I needed to move the compost heap from one side of the garden to the other, in order to dig up the flags next to the bench.

I tried shoving it and working it, but in the end, it was easier to shove it over, slide the plastic free, put it where it needed to go, and then re-fill it with the compost, which had been lying about on the floor.

Oh yeah check out all that compost

Bert and I built this composter. All the wood was recycled and we needed to purchase only the screening and latches. The lid latches shut to keep critters out and the front can be removed for ease of turning the pile.

ELAB is loading compost from the heap into the new screen he built. The screen will separate what is finished from stuff that needs to go back in. We are spreading the finished compost all over the yard and garden to make it very happy. The screen works GREAT, and he made it almost entirely from scrap wood. He cut down larger pieces of lumber to make the parts, which was a lot of effort.

Started a couple of weeks ago using a batch of worm castings, kitchen scraps and dried leaves and grass clippings, covered with plastic. It has started to heat up, a very good sign.
