A standard FarmCity compost bin - approximately 2x2x4', made of cedar (naturally weather- and rot-resistant, no added chemicals), with lots of air circulation. The front boards lift out so that you can get a shovel in easily.

I took the Compost Tea, placed it in this sprayer and sprayed some of our plants.

An old cattle feeder with used snow fencing on the inside. These are about 8 feet across and four feet high. The steel bar sticking out on the left side is used as the temperature probe. As long as it is too hot to touch when pulled out, I know the inside is "cooking".

We have stopped using this system June 2011.

Worm Power composts their feedstock materials prior to vermicomposting. This kills of weed seeds and reduces the potential for pathogens.

It turns out the old compost setup had apparently been working... here's the proof.

A composting toilet is a dry toilet that uses a predominantly aerobic processing system that treats excreta, typically with no water or small volumes of flush water, via composting or managed aerobic decomposition.

Composting toilets may be used as an alternative to flush toilets in situations where there is no suitable water supply or waste treatment facility available or to capture nutrients in human excreta as humanure. They are in use in many of the roadside facilities in Sweden and in national parks in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

The human excrement is normally mixed with sawdust, coconut coir, peat moss to support aerobic processing, absorb liquids, and to reduce the odor. The decomposition process is generally faster than the anaerobic decomposition used in wet sewage treatment systems such as septic tanks.

The Excel is the best-selling unit in North America. It is a high capacity Bio-drum toilet that is very simple to operate, features well proven technology and is extremely reliable. The Excel was the first ever self-contained composting toilet to be certified by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF).

To simulate residential use the Excel was tested by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) at maximum capacity for 6 continuous months, during which the Excel produced no odour and produced a clean, safe compost.

The 2" vent is attached at the top back of the Excel and can be installed invisibly by running it through the wall and up the outside wall. For comfort the Excel has a sturdy detachable footrest which can be removed to pull out the finishing drawer.

Cohasset's dump includes giant heaps of compost, where town residents can bring their compost and take away beautiful black dirt. This snapshot doesn't do justice to the scene of little hills of various degrees of compost -- from freshly raked leafs and kitchen scraps, to unidentifiable half-broken-down muck, to full-out dirt. It does show you just how big those piles are though.

Our newly reconstructed compost bin.

We cleared all of the rubbish out of it, took off the front of it and shored up the sides. We've also sunk a door to split it in two. The left is full of nicely rotted compost, the left is for fresh stuff. It's all covered in carpet to protect the valuable nutrients (and keep the frogs warm).

I decided not to compost the page, because my "Bunny Ghetto" drawing is on the back, so I replaced it with my favorite poem "Belated Valentine: A Work in Progress" by Steven Marsh.

20190303_9445_G12-6 Sieving Compost #1

I spent several hours over the weekend sieving compost from my oldest aged compost bin and spreading it out over the recently cleared sections of the vegetable garden, in preparation for sowing some winter greens and/or leaving fallow over winter.

If I need a finer mix I have two smaller sieves, one a small one for potting mix.

Kate Zidar, neighborhood activist, compost guru, and all around amazing chica. She is the founder of the North Brooklyn Compost Project, which is a genius community composting project which runs parallel to the Greenpoint-Williamsburg CSA. Each week I drop off my scraps from the previous week's vegetables, flowers, fruit, and eggs at the compost project completing the cycle.

The composting program began in March 2010 as a pilot to divert food preparation waste and leftovers from the regular waste stream that is sent to Rio Rancho's landfill to a local business that recycles food waste into useable and sell-able compost.

Modified by adding a deflector so the compost would make a windrow directly behind the spreader. Worked like a charm.

Multi tumbler frame in place in the composting area. Still have to level the whole unit and add the drums as we get them made up. The large bin and barrel composters on the right will be moved in the spring to allow for access to the drums.

After 2 days it has settled about a foot. I heaped it up when I filled it with a mix of leaves and green grass. I used some pizza boxes around the side thinking it would help retain some moisture.

The working part of the garden. As we have sandy soil we need to build up the organic matter.

I do this in a variety of ways...

Compost heaps made using hay bales as walls of the compost heaps. I then use the rotted bales as mulch.

Worm farms (have 2 farms with 3 layers each)

Guinea pigs & ducks add fertiliser to the system

I use black bins to rot down nasty spreading weeds... once safe these are added to the compost heaps
