Incense (Latin: incendere, "to burn") is composed of aromatic biotic materials, which release fragrant smoke when burned. The term "incense" refers to the substance itself, rather than to the odor that it produces. It is used in religious ceremonies, ritual purification, aromatherapy, meditation, for creating a mood, masking bad odours, and in medicine. The use of incense may have originated in Ancient Egypt, where the gums and resins of aromatic trees were imported from the Arabian and Somali coasts to be used in religious ceremonies.

Playing around with visual weight extremes can be a fun way to compose a scene. Here we set up a dynamic between a towering granite rock and a little spotlit doe in a meadow in an attempt to create both tension and harmony. We use a large format here to emphasize contrasts.

 

Original: Marvy and Memento dye based inks applied with Colorbox Stylus Tools (available at www.stampscapes.com). Hero Arts Unicorn white pigment ink. Versafine black pigment ink. 11" x 17" glossy card stock (not glossy photopaper). Shuttle Art and Uniball Signo gel pens.

I had a seascape in mind when I composed this but not sure how it will end up. After this shot was taken, I placed another piece of water soluble stabilizer on top and machine stitched all over. After washing the stabilizers away I started to stitch it with twisted chain stitch (my first time with this stitch- I love the texture it brings) and now I'm not sure if it is a seascape at all. Photos to follow of the next step, hopefully later today.

We woke up before 6:00AM to enjoy the sunrise at Angkor Wat, but unfortunately it had clouded over too much over night and the sunrise was far from impressive. Nonetheless, I was able to take some photos, such as this one, which shows some interesting reflections in the water.

Green Beret Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler composed the #1 song in 1966, "The Ballad of the Green Berets." John Wayne used it as a theme song in his 1968 "The Green Berets."

This portrait of Sadler was used, as a drawing, on the cover of his novel "Casca;" and altered with different costumes in subsequent sequels in the series.

  

"The Ballad" sold 12 million copies, a million in Japan alone and "went into nine versions in Germany," even though it was banned in East Germany where the government labeled the Green Berets "perverts", liking them to the Nazi SS. The first royalty check was for a quarter of a million dollars. That day Sadler, dumped on the living room floor in front of his wife Levona, $50,000 in cash. He had never earned more than $5,000 a year.

 

"I like creating, but I don't like going on tour - I don't want to be an entertainer. I don't think I like the traveling that much. Seems like for about 15 years, my bedroom was over a juke box. My folks were professional gamblers and we traveled a lot, wherever there was a game. Once, I went to nine schools in one year."

 

The Army sent Sadler on tour to promote their enlistment programs. He made more than 800 public appearances in a year and a half. Then he was released from service even though Sadler wanted to re-enlist.

 

"And I'd been wounded anyway. They took a chunk of beef out of my leg. I was on a patrol and stepped on a damn punji stick. Some Viet Cong had spent a few minutes sharpening a piece of bamboo and dumped it in a dung heap and there I was - infected and out of action. Can you imagine $50,000 of trained soldier sent home because of a lousy two-cent bamboo stick and manure? It was a hell of a war."...Barry Sadler (1940-1989)

Composée (Astéracée) de 2-15 cm, stolonifère et pubescente, à feuilles toutes en rosette basale. Limbes obovales légèrement crénelés. Hampes soyeuses, bien plus longues que les feuilles, portant un seul capitule de 2-3 cm de diamètre (ligules comprises). Involucre pubescent à bractées foliacées lancéolées-obtuses, le plus souvent sur deux rangs.

 

Fleurs centrales tubulées, hermaphrodites, jaunes, les périphériques ligulées (radiées) et étalées, avec de nombreuses languettes rayonnantes blanches, souvent rosées en dessous. Akènes obovales d'environ 1 mm, un peu pubescents surtout les externes, sans aigrette ni couronne, munis d'une bordure obtuse et saillante.

 

Autres noms français : Fleur de Pâques (Pâquerette en est un diminutif) ou de pâturage, Petite marguerite (le nom de Marguerite, du grec margarites : perle, est plutôt associé à Leucathemum vulgare). Grâce à ses stolons très cassants, cette espèce est adaptée au piétinement, ce qui lui assure une multiplication végétative efficace et du coup la banalise (cf. H des Abbayes, P Fournier et P Jauzein).

The facade is composed of a "Louvre", an "Opera", an "Arc de Triomphe" and an "Eiffel Tower", all at reduced scale.

Taken in the gorgeous Art-Deco Foshay Tower in Downtown Minneapolis. This building was completed in 1929, and John Philip Sousa was commissioned to compose a celebratory march for the occassion. The Foshay Tower has a very interesting history, as does its doomed architect, Wilbur B. Foshay . From the Minnesota Historical Society:

Listed on NRHP: September 20, 1978

 

The first skyscraper built west of the Mississippi and the tallest building in Minneapolis until 1971, the Foshay Tower was intended as a tribute to the Washington Monument. The Art Deco-style office tower was the brainchild of Wilbur B. Foshay, a multimillionaire real estate developer who prospered in the public utilities business. Shortly before he lost his fortune in the 1929 stock market crash, Foshay opened his tower with an extravagant three-day dedication ceremony, capped by John Philip Sousa’s 75-piece band performing the “Foshay Tower-Washington Memorial March,” commissioned for the occasion.

 

The tower’s distinctive obelisk shape and construction method were patented by Foshay and Minneapolis architect Gottlieb R. Magney soon after the $3.75 million edifice was completed. Built of fabricated steel, hot-riveted with reinforced concrete, the 447-foot Foshay Tower is faced with Indiana limestone. The interior was lavishly finished in the finest materials available, including African mahogany, Italian marble, terrazzo, ornamental bronze and wrought iron. A recent restoration returned the office tower to its original splendor."

"Foshay Tower is the namesake of Wilbur Foshay, a businessman who bought and sold utilties companies in order to build his fortune. When the building was completed, he held a large ceremony featuring music by John Philip Sousa. Foshay even persuaded him to create a special march named "Foshay Tower-Washington Memorial March" that was only played once during Foshay's lifetime, for the opening of the Tower. Six weeks after the building's opening, Foshay's corporate empire had crumbled to dust as the Great Depression began. Ignominiously, Foshay's check to Sousa bounced, and in retaliation, Sousa prohibited the playing of the march so long as Foshay's debt to him remained outstanding. In 1999, a group of Minnesota investors repaid Foshay's debt to Sousa's estate, and the march was permitted to be played again."

  

I composed the shot of having Willy look back next to the one way sign because I wanted him to look as if he's been on the road and ain't going back. There's only one way in life... it's moving forward. I found the photo interesting because this really looks as if he's in a humid environment but it was actually at Bayport. When taking this shot, I was trying to convey the feeling of loneliness I guess. I wanted him to look as if he ran away from home so now he's on the road. I used 1/4000 of a second for shutter speed in order to capture the image faster. With a fast shutter speed, I used a lower f stop. The aperture was at f/1.8 in order to bring in more light. The ISO was at 100 because I had enough exposure from the aperture.

3ЭС4К (3ES4K) is a 3 kV D.C. electric locomotive composed of 3 sections with 9600 kW total power and 52.5 meters long. These multy-unit DC electric locomotives of the Donchak model having one booster B-unit are in production of Novocherkassk Electric Locomotive Plant (NEVZ) from 2014. They are the successors of VL10 (VL11) family, the mass-produced DC electric locomotives built in Soviet Georgia by TEVZ and in Russia at NEVZ. In most mechanical parts they are unified with the Е5К (E5K) and 2/3/4ЕС5К (ES5K) The Ermak ("Ермак"), a family of new 25 kV AC mainline freight electric locomotives with four-axle sections equipped with collector traction motors. The number of sections can be from one to four (internal - boosters without cabs). This model of AC locomotives is named in honour of Russia's national hero Ermak, conqueror of Siberia in the times of Ivan IV The Terrible. They are the next evolutionary stage in the development of ВЛ80 (VL80) freight electric locomotives and are positioned as their main replacement. Like the VL80, they were developed by the All-Russian Research Institute of Electric Locomotive Building (VELNII) in Novocherkassk and have been produced since 2004 at the Novocherkassk Electric Locomotive Plant, a part of the CJSC Transmashholding concern, currently being the most mass-produced family of Russian electric locomotives. More than 2200 ones have already been built, including 1500 three-section 3ES5K. Production of DC eclectric locomotives is more limited with 148 of 2ES4K and 78 3ES4K were built to 2022 consequently.

Locomotives have a steel wagon-type body with a main frame, on which a plastic block control cabin and a set of equipment are mounted. The running gear is designed with axle-axle suspension of traction electric motors with motor-axle plain bearings. The bogies of the low-production 6-axle freight-passenger (Bo'Bo'Bo') electric locomotive ВЛ65 (VL65) are used, this bogie differs from the bogies of VL80 and VL85 by the absence of leaf springs (flexicoil suspension is used), and from the bogie of ВЛ80, in addition, by the absence of kingpins, the force transmission is through the central inclined link. The AC locomotives are equipped with advanced 850 kW collector traction motors НБ-514Д (NB-514D; in new modification ES5S is used asynchronous motors ДТА-1100 and IGBT transistors), as well as a microprocessor control system that provides manual and automatic motion control, diagnostics of motion parameters and operation of all locomotive equipment, electric regenerative braking. Its DC counterparts use different 800 kW DTC-800 traction motors and have a dynamic brake in addition to regenerative braking.

Description of Historic Place:

 

The Cambie Heritage Boulevard is composed of a linear central median planted with approximately 450 trees, with two flanking one-way streets and street edge boulevards, that runs between King Edward Avenue in the north to Southwest Marine Drive in the south. The Cambie Street corridor is a major north-south transportation corridor for both private and public modes of transportation. The central median is known as the Cambie Heritage Boulevard.

 

Heritage Value:

 

The Cambie Heritage Boulevard is valued as an early Canadian example of urban design and planning, influenced by principles of the English Garden City movement, combined with the ideals of the U.S. City Beautiful movement. It is largely the product of the 1930 ‘Plan for the City of Vancouver’ a grand urban master plan produced for the purpose of beautifying the city and improving its functionality, and the Plan’s supplementary revision in 1947. Within these plans, Cambie Street was identified as a principle north-south route to downtown, due to its central geographic location within the city, and because it passed or was close to such important sites as City Hall and several major hospitals – Vancouver General, Grace, Saint Vincent’s and Shaughnessy Military Hospitals. It also connected downtown to Queen Elizabeth Park, the highest point of land in the city. South of Queen Elizabeth Park, Cambie Street extends to Southwest Marine Drive, another link in the proposed chain of similar ‘pleasure drives.’ The Cambie Heritage Boulevard is significant due to the rarity of completed median boulevards of this age, length, width and prominence in the city.

 

Cambie Heritage Boulevard is additionally valued for its association with the planning firm of Harland Bartholomew and Associates, authors of ‘The Plan for the City of Vancouver.’ This firm was a leading force in city planning throughout much of the twentieth century. American-born Bartholomew (1889-1989) was the first full-time planner employed by an American city. From the Bartholomew office came the designs for momentous city and transportation plans in the U.S., such as the George Washington Parkway in Virginia, considered one of the most venerable roads in America. The Bartholomew Plan for Vancouver, a visionary document, was significant for its considerable impact on the subsequent development of the City of Vancouver, with one of the most tangible components being the Cambie Heritage Boulevard.

 

Furthermore, the value of the Cambie Heritage Boulevard is also associated with its plantings. Several sections of the boulevard have been planted in zones in an organized method. Between 25th and 29th Avenues are some of the earliest plantings, which are formal, centred in the median and consist of alternating mature Sequoias and Golden Elms. The section of Cambie Heritage Boulevard adjacent to the quarry garden at Queen Elizabeth Park was planted in conjunction with the development of the Park as an arboretum during the 1940s and 1950s. South of Queen Elizabeth Park, the plantings are more informal, with a mixture of tall coniferous trees and lower deciduous ornamental plantings.

Character-Defining Elements:

 

Key elements that define the heritage character of the Cambie Heritage Boulevard include its:

 

- linear form, with forty-five uninterrupted blocks of grassed and tree planted median

- monumental scale; sixty-one metre width to 25th Avenue; narrowing from sixty-one metres at 29th Avenue to a forty-six metre width at 31st Avenue; south of 31st Avenue the street width is forty-six metres

- open views to the North Shore mountains

- three separate zones of planting: the section between 25th and 29th Avenues with its grand, formal, centred alternating Sequoias and Golden elms; the section adjacent to the Park, with plantings consistent with the Arboretum; and the section south of the Park, with its more informal mixture of tall coniferous trees and shorter deciduous trees with flowering canopies

- flanking one-way streets, serving as a major arterial route for both public and private modes of transportation

- additional landscape resources on the street edge boulevards that contribute to the ambience of the corridor

400x. Mucor sp. can use asexual reproduction when erect hyphal sporangiophores are formed. The tip of the latter swells to form a globose sporangium (upper right corner) that contains haploid sporangiospores which can be easily released and germinate to form a new mycelium.

 

Do not confuse with Penicillium italicum that occurs on citrus fruit and causes a characteristic soft rot of the fruit (covered with a greenish blue layer). P. digitatum (olive coloured) dries out oranges and lemons. These two species are frequently found on the same fruit.

The Five Gardens

 

The 5.5 acre Japanese Garden is composed of five distinct garden styles. When we enter a Japanese garden, the desired effect is to realize a sense of peace, harmony, and tranquility and to experience the feeling of being a part of nature. In a deep sense, the Japanese garden is a living reflection of the long history and traditional culture of Japan. Influenced by Shinto, Buddhist, and Taoist philosophies, there is always “something more” in these compositions of stone, water, and plants than meets the eye.

 

Three of the essential elements used to create a Japanese garden are stone, the “bones” of the landscape; water, the life-giving force; and plants, the tapestry of the four seasons. Japanese garden designers feel that good stone composition is one of the most important elements in creating a well-designed garden. Secondary elements include pagodas, stone lanterns, water basins, arbors, and bridges. Japanese gardens are asymmetrical in design and reflect nature in idealized form. Traditionally, human scale is maintained throughout so that one always feels part of the environment, not overpowered by it. As Professor Tono wanted to incorporate native trees in our Garden so that it would blend naturally with its environment, some of the plantings here are on a larger scale.
