Crystallized salts compose the jagged formations of this forbidding landscape. Deposited by ancient salt lakes and shaped by winds and rain, the crystals are forever changing.

The Death Valley saltpan is one of the largest protected saltpans in North America. Salt continues to be deposited by recurring floods that occasionally submerge the lowest parts of the valley floor. Delicate salt formations are hidden among the harsh and rigid spires.

Oncolitic limestone (~7.8 centimeters across at its widest)

Limestone is a common biogenic sedimentary rock composed of the mineral calcite (CaCO3), which bubbles in acid. Many geologically young limestones are composed of aragonite (also CaCO3). Numerous varieties of limestone exist (e.g., fine-grained limestone/micritic limestone/lime mudstone, coquina, chalk, wackestone, packstone, grainstone, rudstone, rubblestone, coralstone, calcarenite, calcisiltite, calcilutite, calcirudite, floatstone, boundstone, framestone, oolitic limestone, oncolitic limestone, etc.). Most limestones represent deposition in ancient warm, shallow ocean environments.

Oncolitic limestones are readily identified by the presence of abundant oncolites. Oncolites are macroscopic, concentrically layered, ~irregularly spheroidal masses of variable size. The oncolites & surrounding matrix are composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), which bubbles in acid.

The oncolites are biogenic in origin. They grew in successive layers by the active or passive precipitation of calcium carbonate by cyanobacterial films (oncolites can be considered as mobile varieties of stromatolites). Oncolites are usually attributed to “algae”, and these structures are often called “algal balls”. Referring to cyanobacteria as “algae” is a widespread error - they are frequently called “blue-green algae”. Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic, as algae are, but they are not algae.

While composing this photo, I mentioned how beautiful and “stellar” McWay Falls was, a Steller’s Jay was eavesdropping on the conversation and thought I was talking about him. He decided to hop into the scene just as I was clicking the shutter.

Be careful what you say around partially-deaf little birdies…that’s how they start spreading rumors.

I composed a little movie from the "mobile 365" project that was happening here on Flickr in 2010.

Here it is: vimeo.com/19477831

Composed this image with 30x240s subs for 2hrs of exposure.

Equip: SW80EDBD using DSI3pro (mono) stacked with DeepSkyStacker and leveled using Gimp.

Composed of nearly 37,000 bricks it took me 14 months to build. it contains all but one of the rooms featured in the movie (i couldn't fit the Bathroom in!).

About Me - about.me/edwardconde

An interesting tourist folder that is composed of an generic set of illustrated outer pages with, in this case, a central section in Italian, giving details of rail travel in Britain. Issued by the Eastern Region of British Railways, and this copy from the Rome offices of "Ferrovie Britanniche", is illustrated by artist Frederick Donald Blake R.I.

Blake (1908 - 1977) was a noted Scottish artist who was frequently commissioned by British Railways for poster and publicity work. The illustrations and sketches show various 'British" scenes in London and across the country.

Things more 'military' are seen here with three colour plates showing the Yeomen of the Guard, or Beefeaters, at the Tower of London, a Scottish piper and the mounted Lifeguards. Theres is also a familiar British 'bobby' or policeman. The map shows the main connection routes across Europe to ports serving the British Isles and Éire along with main lines.

#119 -- Your Favorite Cuisine -- 121 Pictures in 2021

(I wasn't sure I could pick a favorite cuisine, as I like all kinds & ethnicities of food. But this salad at La Casa Sena convinced me to pick a favorite, at least for now. Exquisitely prepared red & golden beets with a preserved lemon glaze, avocado & avocado mousse, grapefruit, watercress, paper-thin turnip slices, & pumpkin seed garnish---mmmm---)

shot taken at Stow Lake, San Francisco. I was looking to capture some Hawks or Moscovy ducks, but they were no where to be found, but I did get a few shots of turtles and a squirrel and a few geese, but the pigeons were my favorite! So here is another posting.

PEOPLE AND CIVILIZATIONS

75% of the population are composed of Singhalese.

Two important minorities are found: Tamouls and Moors.

Tamouls: one can distinguish the autochtones tamouls from the immigrants, made at last century. The tamouls autochtones (12,6% of the population), installed in North and the East form an important minority, because of their number but especially of their roles. Indeed, they occupy of the important stations in the liberal professions and the administration.

Tamouls Indians (5,5% of the population) have immigrant at last century to work in the culture of the coffee then the. Today they are parked in isolated plantations and live in margin of the company. This community stateless person of more than one million men poses a crucial problem with the government which must face an important crisis.

Moors: called Moors by the Portuguese, the Moslems of Sri Lanka account for 7% of the population, that is to say 1 million people. Integrated well in the economic system of the countries, most favoured hold most of the trade of the invaluable stones. They are also farmers mainly on the east coast.

The Moors always collaborated with the leading classes and would not know, contrary to Tamouls being suspects of claims separatists.

Veddas, descendants of aboriginals, whose name means “hunters” occupied already the island on arrival of the first Singhaleses and Tamouls with which they mixed. Veddas of the jungle still live with the variation of the world and remain thanks to the products of their huntings. Decimated by the disease, they are today hardly a few hundreds.

Burghers, descendants of former Dutch colonists married to Singhaleses, are nothing any more but approximately 40.000, installed for the majority with Colombo.

The Malayan ones, approximately 43.000, are the descendants of Javanese soldiers who accompanied the Dutchmen at the XVIIe century. They live today for the majority with Colombo.

In this workshop, artist, and perfumer Frank Bloem will introduce you to the world of perfume making. You will learn the basics of scent composing and at the end of the workshop, you will have theoretical knowledge on the principles of perfuming, on how to mix fragrant notes and on the difference between natural and synthetic smells. You will go home with a 10 ml bottle of your signature fragrance.

A vermicomposting bucket is mixed with food waste and worms. Several different species of worms such as Canadian nightcrawlers, red wigglers or earthworms are excellent at decomposing organic waste products and turn those throwaway food scraps, paper or yard waste into compost as beneficial soil amendments. Compost is the key to organic farming and researchers at MU's Bradford Research Center in Columbia are looking at ways to make this style of food production more efficient and affordable.
