Financial independence. Power. Fame. These are often the components by which an individual’s success is measured. But what about character, competency, collaboration and trust? Do these qualities count in the measurement of success? This was the focus of this year’s 2012 Student Leadership Conference hosted by NASBA’s Center for the Public Trust’s (CPT) that took place June 12-13 in Philadelphia, PA. Students from universities and colleges all over the nation gathered for a valuable lesson in how to learn, live and lead a life of leadership.

In just its second year, the 2012 Student Leadership Conference saw record growth in attendance with 37 students representing 18 colleges and universities from around the country. Many students attended in hopes of starting a Student CPT chapter on their campus, while others hoped to enhance participation at an existing chapter.

This is an experiment into the theme of Connected images. I was testing the light and exposure so that I could do a continous shot and overlap the images. I included the image because of the way the skater is framed so strikingly.

Carl Sandburg College hosted the First Annual Business Simulation event today featuring 10 area teams with the concept of running their own "Biz Cafe" coffee start-up. Teams created several components including names, logo design, equipment and furniture purchases, staffing, and simulated scenarios that could happen in the real world. There's a fun recap of this on our Snapchat account for the next few hours - visit Sandburg66 to see it!

No.4 Loch rolls into Port Erin

Named after lieutenant governor Henry Brougham Loch and seen as a "favourite" engine on the railway, as originally built "Loch" was a small-boilered locomotive, but was rebuilt as a medium-boilered model in 1909, which gave it the same tractive effort as Nos. 10 and 11. No. 4 has the unusual distinction of having reentered service on the day the line closed. Having been earmarked for reboilering in 1967, by the 1968 season it was ready for service and steam tests were carried out accordingly. Conditions changed however, and at the end of September 1968 the Peel and Ramsey lines permanently shut down. The Port Erin line was retained and No. 4 was used there as the south based engine for many years, until it withdrawal from service after the railway's 1995 Christmas services. It was the only locomotive to carry a non functioning "bell-mouth" dome until the Salter safety valves were reinstated in 2021, and a non-standard livery of maroon was carried from 1979 to withdrawal. It currently wears the familiar Indian red, and until the 2021 overhaul was distinguished from it shed-mates by carrying a Legs Of Mann and "4" numeral on it buffer beam. It was used heavily in the marketing campaign for the 1993 "Year Of Railways" when it was the locomotive chosen to haul special services on the Manx Electric Railway. Following withdraw in 1995 the Un-Loch Your Cash appeal by the Isle of Man Steam Railway Supporters' Association in 1998–2000 funded a replacement boiler. Reboilered for the fifth time in its career in 2002, Loch returned as a regular fleet member once more. On 20 May 2008, it collided with a van and badly damaged its buffer beam, destroying the timber portion. The boiler certificate expired on 31 August 2015, and following that day's services the locomotive with withdrawn from traffic. The overhaul began in 2017. This involved major rebuilding all of the engine's moving parts; replacing the most worn out components, new side tanks, cab floor, coal bunker and all pipework. The boiler was overhauled by the Severn Valley Railway, replacing about half of it with new parts, including the entire inner firebox. It was given Salter safety valves, which had not been seen in service on the railway for over 60 years. In early 2021, No. 4 had several test runs and was returned to service when the season commenced in late May.
