A broken lightbulb I'd been meaning to paint on. I might make it more complicated in the future with more colors..

...but just simple grass.

Russell (Hunslet No.901 from 1906) works the WHHR Heritage train (it’s all complicated as the WHHR is air braked and the FR / WHR isn’t) is seen rounding the curves on the approach to Rhyd Ddu with a southbound train.

In order to bring this fellow into the right light, a had setup a flash light (with kind of cold white light) behind an empty toilet paper roll, which I covered with some ducked tap to have a very small exit point for the light. The setup and the outcome turned out to be as complicated as I expected upfront.

Looking for the essence of B&W photography .

Another competition and another dilemma … Black and White

What makes good B&W image, that beats the heck out of me. I like complicated , details , contrast on so many different levels , multiple points of interest … but B&W takes away all the little things and nails you to the point – no ifs, ands or buts .

This is rework of older image from Arches National Park in Utah.

Thank you to my beautiful ( and talented ) wife for the guidance and advice .

The first episode of my 501st Journal series is here. Starting off this week we have the starter level on Geonosis.

Also make sure to look closely as there are some droids blended in ;)

This MOC has some interesting techniques around the build (pun intended as it's round) that I'd like to point out. For the geonosian ground I decided to use 1x1 Dark Orange plates and just pour them in to make it have that rough feel to it. For the base as usual we have 1x2 DBG plates that have been forced together into this circular shape. Something I've used plenty times before. Lastly we have the command center that I mostly built just using the parts on hand. I didn't want anything to complicated, but I like how it fits together very well with the rest of the MOC.

New Zealand Birds On Line note that "...Tui are boisterous, medium-sized, common and widespread bird of forest and suburbia... They look black from a distance, but in good light Tui have a blue, green and bronze iridescent sheen, and distinctive white throat tufts (poi). They are usually very vocal, with a complicated mix of tuneful notes interspersed with coughs, grunts and wheezes.

Tui have almost-black heads, underparts, wings and tails that have an iridescent blue and green sheen, especially on the head and wings. The upper back and flanks are dark reddish brown with a bronze sheen, the nape and sides of the neck have filamentous white feathers, and there are two unusual curled white feather tufts on the throat... The bill and feet are black, and the eye dark brown.

Tui are (also) notoriously aggressive, and will defend a flowering or fruiting tree, or a small part of a large tree, from all-comers, whether another Tui or another bird species. They vigorously chase other birds away from their feeding territory with loud whirring wings...".

STOP PRESS - And if you still have some time, have a look at New Zealand Geographic's very readable article on Tui; I highly recommend it:

The children are mobiles, ubiquitous and unpredictable, and given their innocence and ease, to photograph them can seem easy. But I don't believe that it is this way. On the contrary, the children are mirrors that reflect with such a crudeness the life and the circumstances that surround them that to capture them without artifice, in their pure and simple essence, it can be but complicated that an adult to portray.

The intriguing Common Raven has accompanied people around the Northern Hemisphere for centuries, following their wagons, sleds, sleighs, and hunting parties in hopes of a quick meal. Ravens are among the smartest of all birds, gaining a reputation for solving ever more complicated problems invented by ever more creative scientists. These big, sooty birds thrive among humans and in the back of beyond, stretching across the sky on easy, flowing wingbeats and filling the empty spaces with an echoing croak. (Cornell).

All comments regarding this picture, subject, composition, etc are welcome and appreciated. TIA.

Now I understand why mysterious stories circulate around here...

Not a tank expert, but appears to be a Soviet made T-62 tank. It sits just off the road at Beale AFB, CA, near the entrance to the gun range.

Not knowing the history of this tank, it was probably one used by the US Marine Corps. The United States Marine Corps (USMC) obtained T-62 tanks from Egypt and Israel. The USMC used these tanks at the National Training Center.

The T-62 Main Battle Tank is a Soviet-era armored vehicle.

It was designed in the early 1960s and saw extensive use during the Cold War.

The T-62 featured advanced technology for its time, including a smoothbore gun and composite armor.

The T-62 Main Battle Tank (MBT) was the last in a series of excellent Soviet tank designs that began with the T-34 in the late 1930s.

T-62 production began in 1962, and an estimated 20,000 were built during the next eight years.

The T-62 was not as successful as Soviet designers had hoped. Its main gun could not be aimed low enough to deal with attacking infantry, and its rate of fire was slowed by the complicated fire control system.

I'm getting ready to head to Florida next week and soon hope to have lots of new material but that made me think about the last time I was there a half dozen years ago. So here are a few from that last trip.

Another load of phosphate is northbound on CSXT's Brewster Sub near MP 844 passing the remains of South Bradley Yard (ex SAL) in the famed Bone Valley region of central Florida, Encompassing portions of present-day Hardee, Hillsborough, Manatee, and Polk counties, in which phosphate is mined for use in the production of agricultural fertilizer. Florida currently contains the largest known deposits of phosphate in the United States and the mining and production and distribution relies heavily on rail service. The region is the exclusive domain of CSX Transportation which maintains a complicated tangled web of lines in the region southwest of Tampa that is anchored by Mulberry Yard.

I only had the chance to visit the area for a few hours one afternoon and what it lacks in scenery it makes up for in classic older power and crazy complicated operations threading seemingly everywhere.

I don't know the symbol of this train led by a classic SD50 & SD40-2 duo. The leader was blt. Jan. 1984 as CO 8563 in Chessie System livery while the trailing unit was blt. Apr. 1979 as LN 8016 in Family Lines gray and both have kept their original numbers under the CSX banner. They are about a mile from the location known as Bradey Junction where the Brewster Sub, Achan Sub, and Agricola Spur all meet at a wye and diamond crossing. The trackage at the junction is all former Seaboard Air Line but the SAL's arch rival the Atlantic Coast Line also served the valley historically.

Bradley Junction is named for Peter Bradley of New York who was one of the fertilizer capitalists (Bradley Fertilizer Co.) that Captain LeBaron (of the US Army Corps of Engineers who first discovered the phosphate deposits in 1881) had first approached about the sand bars on the Peace River where he'd made his discovery. In May 1899, Bradley was involved in the merger of 22 fertilizer companies into the American Agricultural Chemical Co., (AGRICO) becoming vice president and a director of the new corporation.

For months, the world has watched and listened to arguments and discussions about what the course of action should be in the Middle East by the rest of the world. The thoughts are complex and very complicated

Wadi Rum, ironically, was the site of Lawrence of Arabia's war and the backdrop for one of the greatest films ever made. Now, scenes like this exist, with tents being used by tourists visiting the quiet solitary sand dunes to see the sweeping views. This is a "must do" if you visit Jordan.

"incendiary devices" going off around the Annapolis/Baltimore area at various state headquarters today....

it's complicated

"I mean, I don’t know how the world broke. And I don’t know if there’s a God who can help us fix it. But the fact that the world is broken - I absolutely believe that. Just look around us. Every minute - every single second - there are a million things you could be thinking about. A million things you could be worrying about. Our world - don’t you just feel we’re becoming more fragmented? I used to think that when I got older, the world would make so much more sense. But you know what? The older I get, the more confusing it is to me. The more complicated it is. Harder. You’d think we’d be getting better at it. But there’s just more and more chaos. The pieces - they’re everywhere. And nobody knows what to do about it. I find myself grasping, Nick. You know that feeling? That feeling when you just want the right thing to fall into the right place, not only because it’s right, but because it would mean that such a thing is still possible? I want to believe that."
