So cheery with the dreadful clouds looming in the background!

The Thanjavir Maratha Palace Complex is home to several museums, including the excellent Thanjavur Art Gallery, with its magnificent collection of Chola era bronzes and stone statues. This photograph shows some of the latter: the Rishni Patnis (wives of the seven great yogis) from Darasuram (12th century).

On the north slope of Longevity Hill.

This gigantic silo-like building is said to mark where Buddha presented his eightfold path to nirvana and has been here since 500 C.E.

 

The monumental stupa is a sacred place for Buddhists. Buddhists come from all over the world to circle around it, as it is where Buddha delivered his first sermon.
