Launch Complex 14 is most well known as the launch site for NASA's Mercury-Atlas 6 flight, which made John H. Glenn the first American in orbit. It was also the launch site of the other Mercury-Atlas flights and various unmanned Atlas launches. Later, it was the site for Atlas-Agena launches, with the Gemini Agena Target Vehicle (GATV), for Project Gemini.

Following decommissioning and abandonment as active launch site, Launch Complex 14 slowly fell into decay. Although a stop on the pre-11 September 2001 public bus tours of Cape Canaveral, the proximity of the site to the Atlantic Ocean created an ideal environment for the corrosion of metal components and the complex's red metal gantry structures were dismantled for safety purposes in the 1970s.

Voronezh is a city and the administrative centre of Voronezh Oblast in southwestern Russia straddling the Voronezh River, located 12 kilometers (7.5 mi) from where it flows into the Don River. The city sits on the Southeastern Railway, which connects western Russia with the Urals and Siberia, the Caucasus and Ukraine, and the M4 highway (Moscow–Voronezh–Rostov-on-Don–Novorossiysk). In recent years the city has experienced rapid population growth, rising in 2021 to 1,057,681, up from 889,680 recorded in the 2010 Census, making it the 14th-most populous city in the country.

For many years, the hypothesis of the Soviet historian Vladimir Zagorovsky dominated: he produced the toponym "Voronezh" from the hypothetical Slavic personal name Voroneg. This man allegedly gave the name of a small town in the Chernigov Principality (now the village of Voronizh in Ukraine). Later, in the 11th or 12th century, the settlers were able to "transfer" this name to the Don region, where they named the second city Voronezh, and the river got its name from the city. However, now many researchers criticize the hypothesis, since in reality neither the name of Voroneg nor the second city was revealed, and usually the names of Russian cities repeated the names of the rivers, but not vice versa.

A comprehensive scientific analysis was conducted in 2015–2016 by the historian Pavel Popov. His conclusion: "Voronezh" is a probable Slavic macrotoponym associated with outstanding signs of nature, has a root voron- (from the proto-Slavic vorn) in the meaning of "black, dark" and the suffix -ezh (-azh, -ozh). It was not “transferred” and in the 8th - 9th centuries it marked a vast territory covered with black forests (oak forests) - from the mouth of the Voronezh river to the Voronozhsky annalistic forests in the middle and upper reaches of the river, and in the west to the Don (many forests were cut down). The historian believes that the main "city" of the early town-planning complex could repeat the name of the region – Voronezh. Now the hillfort is located in the administrative part of the modern city, in the Voronezh upland oak forest. This is one of Europe's largest ancient Slavic hillforts, the area of which – more than 9 hectares – 13 times the area of the main settlement in Kyiv before the baptism of Rus.

In it is assumed that the word "Voronezh" means bluing - a technique to increase the corrosion resistance of iron products. This explanation fits well with the proximity to the ancient city of Voronezh of a large iron deposit and the city of Stary Oskol. As well as the name of Voroneț Monastery known for its blue shade.

Folk etymology claims the name comes from combining the Russian words for raven (ворон) and hedgehog (еж) into Воронеж. According to this explanation two Slavic tribes named after the animals used this combination to name the river which later in turn provided the name for a settlement. There is not believed to be any scientific support for this explanation.

In the 16th century, the Middle Don basin, including the Voronezh river, was gradually conquered by Muscovy from the Nogai Horde (a successor state of the Golden Horde), and the current city of Voronezh was established in 1585 by Feodor I as a fort protecting the Muravsky Trail trade route against the slave raids of the Nogai and Crimean Tatars. The city was named after the river.

In the 17th century, Voronezh gradually evolved into a sizable town. Weronecz is shown on the Worona river in Resania in Joan Blaeu's map of 1645. Peter the Great built a dockyard in Voronezh where the Azov Flotilla was constructed for the Azov campaigns in 1695 and 1696. This fleet, the first ever built in Russia, included the first Russian ship of the line, Goto Predestinatsia. The Orthodox diocese of Voronezh was instituted in 1682 and its first bishop, Mitrofan of Voronezh, was later proclaimed the town's patron saint.

Owing to the Voronezh Admiralty Wharf, for a short time, Voronezh became the largest city of South Russia and the economic center of a large and fertile region. In 1711, it was made the seat of the Azov Governorate, which eventually morphed into the Voronezh Governorate.

In the 19th century, Voronezh was a center of the Central Black Earth Region. Manufacturing industry (mills, tallow-melting, butter-making, soap, leather, and other works) as well as bread, cattle, suet, and the hair trade developed in the town. A railway connected Voronezh with Moscow in 1868 and Rostov-on-Don in 1871.

Pura Besakih is a temple complex in the village of Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung in eastern Bali, Indonesia. It is the most important, the largest and holiest temple of Hindu religion in Bali, and one of a series of Balinese temples. Perched nearly 1000 meters up the side of Gunung Agung, it is an extensive complex of 23 separate but related temples with the largest and most important being Pura Penataran Agung. The temple is built on six levels, terraced up the slope. The entrance is an formed by a Candi Bentar (split gateway), and beyond it the Kori Agung is the gateway to the second courtyard.

HISTORY

The precise origins of the temple are not clear but it almost certainly dates from prehistoric times. The stone bases of Pura Penataran Agung and several other temples resemble megalithic stepped pyramids, which date back at least 2000 years. It was certainly used as a Hindu place of worship from 1284 when the first Javanese conquerors settled in Bali. By the 15th century, Besakih had become a state temple of the Gelgel dynasty.

LOCATION

It was built on the south slopes of Mount Agung, the principal volcano of Bali.

ARCHITETURE

Pura Besakih is a complex made up of twenty-three temples that sit on parallel ridges. It has stepped terraces and flights of stairs which ascend to a number of courtyards and brick gateways that in turn lead up to the main spire or Meru structure, which is called Pura Penataran Agung. All this is aligned along a single axis and designed to lead the spiritual person upward and closer to the mountain which is considered sacred.

The main sanctuary of the complex is the Pura Penataran Agung. The symbolic center of the main sanctuary is the lotus throne or padmasana, which is therefore the ritual focus of the entire complex. It dates to around the seventeenth century.

A series of eruptions of Mount Agung in 1963, which killed approximately 1,700 people also threatened Pura Besakih. The lava flows missed the temple complex by mere meters. The saving of the temple is regarded by the Balinese people as miraculous, and a signal from the gods that they wished to demonstrate their power but not destroy the monument the Balinese faithful had erected.

FESTIVALS

Each year there are at least seventy festivals held at the complex, since almost every shrine celebrates a yearly anniversary. This cycle is based on the 210-day Balinese Pawukon calendar year.

It had been nominated as a World Heritage Site as early as 1995, but remains unvested.

Visitors to this temple should exercise caution as there is a syndicate operating in and around the premise of this temple. They target tourists by offering a compulsory "tour guide" at exorbitant charges. They also perform "prayers" and request for tips at the end of the "tour". Visitors who decline their "services" are dealt with rather aggressively.

VISITORS

In 2013, foreign visitors count is 84,368 persons (77.2 percent), while domestic visitors is 24,853 persons (22.8 percent).

The end of the main bent-bar complex, where the courthouse program gives way to a skylit underground jail (designed and built by DMJM in the 1990s - well after Wright's time). This was a subject of some controversy, mainly in terms of how the jail would be made to fit in architecturally with Wright's complex (answer: by burying it) but obviously there is a larger story to investigate here concerning the prisoners, the poor conditions that mandated a new jail, the different visions of justice in circulation at different moments in the twentieth century, etc.

Introductory text here.

The Nasrid Palaces are a complex of palaces that served as the residence of the kings of Granada. Its construction was started by the founder of the dynasty, Alhamar, in the thirteenth century, although the surviving buildings date mainly from the fourteenth century. The style and decoration of these palaces reflect the taste of the last Hispano-Arab governors of Al Andalus, the Nasrids.

There are three independent areas in the Nasrid Palaces: the Mexuar, which corresponds to the semipublic part of the palace, for justice administration and State affairs; the Comares Palace, which was the official residence of the king; and the Palace of the Lions, which was the private area of the palace, where the Harem was located. Not only were these areas different because of their functions, but also because of their artistic characteristics. The Comares Palace was decorated in a typically Muslim way, but the Palace of the Lions presents Christian influences, probably as a consequence of the friendship between Mohammed V and his Castilian counterpart Pedro I, the Cruel.

The Ijen volcano complex is a group of stratovolcanoes, in East Java, Indonesia. It is inside a larger caldera Ijen, which is about 20 kilometers wide. The Gunung Merapi stratovolcano is the highest point of that complex. The name of this volcano resembles that of a different volcano, Mount Merapi in central Java, also known as Gunung Merapi. The name "Merapi" means "fire" in the Indonesian language. From: wiki.

Java is the world's most densely populated island (population: 136 million). It is home to 60% of Indonesia's population. Much of Indonesian history took place on Java; it was the centre of powerful Hindu-Buddhist empires, Islamic sultanates, the core of the colonial Dutch East Indies, and was at the centre of Indonesia's campaign for independence. The island dominates Indonesian social, political and economic life. More information on wikipedia.

The Buffalo Life Sciences Complex which is part of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute was designed by Francis Cauffman Foley Hoffman Architects and opened in 2005.

In 1921, a survey conducted by the State Board of Mental Hygiene, found all State Hospitals overcrowded and in dire need of repairs, especially Greystone Park. The State funded repairs and new construction, specifically to assist Greystone Park's expansion and to meet the needs of the 2,700 patients. As a result, by 1927, the Curry Complex was completed along with a new power plant, barns, greenhouses, a fire station and auxiliary buildings. The Curry Complex consisted of a Reception Building, Clinic Building, large staff congregate dining rooms and new housing for staff. The Clinic Building, which was the first building opened in 1923, closed 52 years later when the Central Avenue Complex opened in 1975. The Reception Building was closed in 1976 and the dining rooms in the mid-1980's

The Gaia Hypothesis

"The Earth System behaves as a single, self-regulating system with physical, chemical, biological, and human components"

I loved the idea that the Earth itself is a self regulating complex organism in its own right, and that all the elements natural and human are linked. Gaia, of course, is the Ancient Greek Goddess Mother Earth

This collection is inspired by this idea. I used a central gemstone to represent the planet, and have handwoven, beautiful Tourmaline rondelles around the "planets" to represent the elements and the biosphere.

The central gemstones, are a blue and a yellow cloudy Aquamarine gemstones, and two Indian Jasper gemstones, one a deep green, the other a pinky/reddy brown

I hope you enjoy the pictures

Klintegaarden is an apartment complex in Aarhus, the 2nd largest town in Denmark. It was built in 1936 – 1938 and it was projected by Hans Ove Christensen. He was also the man behind a number of other functionalistic buildings in Aarhus.

The philosophy behind Klintegaarden was that the families were to share a lot of facilities. In a villa in the middle of the complex was a café, laundrette and a big kitchen where the tenants had lunch together. There even was a collective service that took care of the cleaning of the apartments. Most of these collective functions where later scrapped. The villa is in a more classic style and it is only partly visible in these pictures.

The building has a terrific overview of the harbour and the water and is, in my view one of the most impressive buildings in my home town, Aarhus.

I took these pictures on a very cold day in the early spring time on a real trip down Memory Lane for me. I was born and raised in another house on the same street, Skovvejen. When I was a kid we were not allowed to play in the yard of Klintegaarden. If we were to play with the children of Klintegaarden they could come to our yard, we were not allowed in theirs. I do not; however remember playing with them, not even once. Still, it is an impressive building complex.

Below Klintegaarden lies a newer complex called Langeliniehuset. It is one of the more luxurious complexes in Aarhus and a number of the apartments are owned by Danes living abroad, who use them as holiday compounds. It is a beautiful place in its own right and I have tried to capture its interplay with Klintegaarden in some of these pictures.
