“In increments both measurable and not, our childhood is stolen from us -- not always in one momentous event but often in a series of small robberies, which add up to the same loss.”

Walking through the mirror maze in the petroleum exhibit at the Museum of Science & Industry. I was supposedly imagining myself as a hydrocarbon molecule, and getting lost among the increasingly complex hydrocarbon molecules on the mirrors. I was actually just getting annoyed at all the kids running around, but that's about par for the course.

The entire complex of buildings is quite diverse, as is the case with the Old Town Hall. Houses were built from the 13th up to 18 century. The oldest part of the complex is the cloister, which was part of the Dominican monastery built in the early 13th century. The buildings of the complex with the broad united front entrance were built according to the design of M. Grimm from 1726 to 1732. Before this facade is the original historic courtyard. Interestingly Renaissance staircase, the work of architects brothers Gabriel. In the hall we find three sets of sundials, all dated to 1728 showing ideas looking at Brno, with the eagle of Zeus and the Provincial House. Metal fountain standing in the middle of the courtyard dates back to 1928, when it was part of an exhibition of contemporary culture. The fountain is decorated with allegories of the twelve months of the year. Interesting is also the interior hall decorated with frescoes. Also visit the Assembly Hall of the Knights' Hall and Hall of provincial boards, the first courtyard, in addition to designated Renaissance staircase are also several historic sites.

Dominican Square - " Fish Market "

The Dominican Square comes from Freedom Square Zámečnická short street. The most prominent structures are complex New Town Hall ( formerly the seat of the Provincial Assembly and the court) and the St. Michael church with a beautiful baroque pulpit, which binds to one of Brno's reputation.

Church. Michael is the temple of the former Dominican monastery, founded in the years 1228-1238. When this church founded Moravian Margrave Ottokar I., son of Vladislav II ., in the first half of the 13th century Dominican order. Dilapidated medieval church was destroyed during the siege of Brno by Swedes. The baroque reconstruction in the 17th century (consecrated in 1679), author of the project was John the Baptist Erna. A special feature is the orientation change of the church whose façade with an impressive double spiers is heading east.

A special feature of the church is the pulpit in Baroque style, which pressed Josef Winterhalder 1747. The main altar is a monumental three-story structure, decorated with statues.

The earlier part of the Dominican Square was also a gothic chapel which stood on the street corner entering the mouth of the Locksmith street. In fact, the two chapels: one dedicated to St. Wenceslas and the other Mary. In the fifteenth or sixteenth century chapel changed patron, the Virgin Mary replaced Cyril and Methodius. Chapel of Our Lady founded by Czech King Wenceslas II. Deed on 25 března (March) 1297.

Royal property did not stay long. John of Luxemburg the third November 1322 gave the widow of Vaclav II., Eliska Rejčce and joined the house, which was located near the tabernacle. Rejčka house and chapel transferred Cistercian monastery in Old Brno. The scope of the Cistercian chapel remained until the abolition of their order by Josef II. in 1782. Like many other religious buildings it has since served as a military depot (a similar fate had church. Nicholas in Freedom Square).

City of Brno former chapel took over in 1902. City officials simply decided to demolish part of the redevelopment. Against this step rebelled cultural elite and conservation authorities, even they and the Central Commission for art historical sights in Vienna protested, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy . Nothing, however, what was in 1908 not applicable went of this historically valuable building to the ground. Today you can see some of the historical fragments of the former royal chapel in the cloister of the New City Hall, many other stone fragments is closed to the public because they are kept in the corridors bomb shelter in the Petrova rock.

The terrace at the church. Michael is 10 baroque statues.

The Katas Temple Complex

Nestled away in the eastern part of the great Salt Range, east of Islamabad, lie ancient temples whose beauty has inspired countless travellers for centuries. With the construction of the Islamabad-Lahore Motorway which skirts its edge, it is emerging - fortunately or unfortunately - as a popular tourist destination in the region.

Located in the Chakwal district of Punjab province, this complex is approximately 150 kilometers from Islamabad and can be reached from the capital in less than 3 hours.

It is located on the main road leading from Lake Kallar Kahar to Choa Saidan Shah and is not far from the Kallar Kahar Lake. Built in the 9th-11th century when the Salt Range was part of the powerful Hindu Kingdom of Kashmir, this large complex houses several temples most of which, unfortunately, are in a rather derelict condition. There is also a fortress surrounding a pool. Legend has it that the pool was formed by the tears of the Hindu God Shiva while weeping over his dead wife. According to an Indian website I looked up, the pool reportedly has "magical powers" and is mentioned in the great Indian epic Mahabharata. The Katas Temple Complex used to be a major place of pilgrimage for the Hindus before the partition of India in 1947 and to this day several devotees visit it in Spring every year. There is talk that it may be placed on the World Heritage List and a joint India-Pakistan project to restore and renovate it is under discussion.

According to Gen Cunningham, Katas was considered the second largest holy place in Punjab for Hindu pilgrims after Jawala Mukhi. It is said famous Pando brothers spent 12 years in Katas and built the temples of Satghara. It is said Al-Beruni also spent some time at Katas to learn Sanskrit in a linguistic university which, at that time, was established here. Temples at Katas have been transferred from the federal government to the Punjab Archaeology Department recently.

Katas Raj is also the place where Alberuni attempted to measure the circumference of the Earth, studied Sanskrit and wrote his renowned Kitab-ul-Hind (Book of Hind) which depicted the religion, scientific knowledge, and social customs of Hindus. Paras Nath Jogi drew his last breath on Katas. Jagat Guru Nanak Ji also visited the place on the 1st of Visakh. Katas came to be known as Nanaknawas and was a site of contemplation for many large groups of mystics, ascetics and jogis. According to Hindu beliefs, taking bath in the holy pond at the site washes away all sins and makes man innocent.

Philae Temple Complex is on an island in the reservoir of the Aswan Low Dam, downstream of the Aswan Dam and Lake Nasser, Egypt. Philae was originally located near the expansive First Cataract of the Nile in Upper Egypt and was the site of an Egyptian temple complex. These rapids and the surrounding area have been flooded since the initial construction of the Aswan Low Dam in 1902. The temple complex was dismantled and moved to nearby Agilkia Island as part of the UNESCO Nubia Campaign project, protecting this and other complexes before the 1970 completion of the Aswan High Dam.

One of Nubia's most important monument sites, the Temples of Philae, 12 kilometers south of Aswan, was an ancient pilgrimage center for the cult of Isis and dazzled travelers with its power for centuries. This sacred site was venerated from the Pharaonic era up to the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine periods with each ruler adding their own stamp onto the stones here.

The First Pylon leads into the main temple area. Its two towers and central doorway provide a grand 18-meter-high entry that is decorated with reliefs by Nectanebo. A doorway in the western tower with reliefs by Philometor, leads directly to the Birth House. In front of the pylon there originally stood two granite obelisks erected by Euergetes II and two granite lions. Adjoining the east tower, an elegant gateway has reliefs by Ptolemy II Philadelphus (on the lintel) and the Emperor Tiberius (on the jambs). The gateway, built by Philadelphus, originally stood in a brick wall.

On the front of the east tower, a huge relief depicts Ptolemy XII Neos Dionysos grasping a band of enemies by the hair and raising his club to smite them, with Isis, the falcon-headed Horus of Edfu, and Hathor on the left. Above are two reliefs of Neos Dionysos presenting the crowns of Upper and Lower Egypt to Horus and Nephthys (right) and offering incense to Isis and Harpocrates (left).

On either side of the Forecourt, you'll see structures fronted by colonnades. The small building to the east contained rooms for the priests, which served some scientific purpose. Look for the plant columns in its vestibule, which are notable for their elegant proportions. On the north side of the building's vestibule, a door accesses the inner passage around the temple.

The building on the western side of the Forecourt is the Birth House (mammisi), dedicated to Hathor-Isis in honor of the birth of her son Horus. It is surrounded on all four sides by colonnades, the columns in which have foliage capitals surmounted by sistrum capitals. The walls, columns, and screens between the columns are covered with reliefs and inscriptions, mostly by Euergetes II, Neos Dionysos, Augustus, and Tiberius.

In the Birth House check out the interesting reliefs in the last chamber, which depict scenes from the childhood of Horus, including Horus as a falcon in the swamps of the Delta and Isis suckling Horus in the swamps.

The Second Pylon provides a fittingly regal entry to the inner sanctum of the temple with a magnificent doorway 32 meters wide and 12 meters high. The reliefs on the central doorway are by Euergetes II. In front of the doorway are the foundations of a small chapel. Within the central doorway (on the right, above) are some much faded early Christian paintings.

The eight-columned Vestibule is the first room of the inner temple area and was originally separated from the court by screens between the columns on the front. Look for the Coptic crosses and Greek inscription incised into the walls that show how the temple was transformed into a Christian place of worship during the early Byzantine age under the Coptic Bishop Theodore.

After passing through a number of antechambers flanked by dark side chambers, you come to the Sanctuary, lit by two small windows. On the west side of this room is a door leading out of the temple to arrive at the Gateway of Hadrian. Gateway of Hadrian was built in the reign of the Emperor Hadrian and decorated with reliefs by Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius, and Lucius Verus.

Long after the introduction of Christianity, the Nubians remained faithful to the cult of Isis, and it was only in the time of Justinian (AD 527-565) that the temples were closed and some of their chambers converted for use in Christian worship. From then until the coming of Islam, a Coptic town flourished on the island.

Southeast of the Temple of Hathor, on the bank of the river, is the Kiosk of Trajan, which during Egypt's age of Victorian explorers was a favorite subject of famous English artists. It dates from the Roman Imperial period and was left unfinished.
