The Flag Building also referred to as the Super Power Building is the largest building in Clearwater, Florida. It is owned by the Church of Scientology and was built principally to deliver the Super Power Rundown, a high-level Scientology training course intended to train Scientologists to use what Scientology describes as all of their 57 "perceptics" or senses. The interior of the building contains training suites, course rooms, theaters, and various devices intended to test these "perceptics," including a "time machine", an anti-gravity simulator, an "infinite" pit, and a pain station.

The complex occupies a city block at 215 South Fort Harrison Avenue. It includes a 15-story tower topped by a bronze Scientology cross visible from much of Clearwater. Construction began in 1998, was halted in 2003, and was ultimately resumed to reach substantial completion during 2011. The long delay in construction led to substantial fines being levied by the city authorities. The building is valued at $80 million and at least $145 million was raised by Church fundraising towards the project. The church denies accusations that the Flag Building's completion was deliberately delayed so that it could serve as a cash cow.[citation needed]

The Church of Scientology announced in August 2013 that the building would be opened to the public on October 6, 2013, with a dedication ceremony that the church estimated would attract approximately 10,000 Scientologists. However, a month later it emerged that the Church had canceled the ceremony and postponed the opening of the building. The building finally opened on November 17, 2013.

At 127,000 square feet (11,800 m2), the building is the largest property in Clearwater. It was originally budgeted to cost $24 million, but the cost has more than doubled to an estimated $50 million after repeated redesigns of the interior. According to the building plans, the Super Power Building will feature a grand lobby lined with sculptures depicting aspects of Scientology; theaters for training and introductory films; a museum honoring the Sea Org; and a separate museum honoring Scientology's founder, L. Ron Hubbard. The sixth floor will house an indoor running track for Scientologists undergoing the Purification Rundown detoxification program.

The Mediterranean Revival-style building will also contain a bookstore, a library, and hundreds of course and study rooms; with a total of 889 rooms, 447 windows, and 42 bathrooms, plus a 1,140-seat dining room and two kitchens. A 124-foot (38 m) bridge connects the Super Power Building to the Scientology-owned Fort Harrison Hotel on the other side of S. Fort Harrison Avenue.[1] In January 2012, Tony Ortega of the Village Voice published leaked blueprints of the Super Power Building that revealed architectural features including a recreation of a deck on the Apollo, L. Ron Hubbard's flagship in the 1960s.

The Wawel Royal Castle and the Wawel Hill on which it sits constitute the most historically and culturally significant site in Poland. A fortified residency on the Vistula River in Kraków, it was established on the orders of King Casimir III the Great[2] and enlarged over the centuries into a number of structures around an Italian-styled courtyard. It represents nearly all European architectural styles of the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods.

Paper used: "Wenzhou" rice paper, treated with cellulose wallpaper glue. 132x132 cm.

This is a major improvement over my last attempt, and, while not perfect, is definitely one of my favourite folds I have done so far.

As always, comments and/or critique is welcome.

In this one sliver of a wintry Manhattan I noticed a slew of fire escapes nestled between several structures. From this angle escaping from a building seems amazingly complex.

nrhp # 80003426- The Joanna Furnace Complex was an iron furnace that operated from 1792 to 1901 in Robeson Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. It was founded by Samuel Potts and Thomas Rutter III and named for Potts's wife Joanna.[2][3] The furnace and its associated buildings were listed as a historic district by the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

After the Civil War the charcoal-fired furnace was owned by Clement Grubb's son-in-law, L. Heber Smith, a Civil War Colonel who married Clement's daughter Ella Jane Brooke Grubb in 1868. It passed through several hands before Smith took ownership, probably after the war and before his marriage to Ella Jane. It is likely that the Grubbs assisted with the furnace's major technological upgrade in 1889, when Ella Jane was an heiress to her father's sizable estate that year. The furnace continued in operation under Smith until it was "blown out" after his death in 1898 at the age of 61. The furnace was acquired by Bethlehem Steel, who deeded it to the Hay Creek Valley Historical Association in 1979. The ruins have been preserved and are open to visitors.

Supreme Court Complex, Hobart, by Department of Public Works / Peter Partridge won the 25 Year Award for Enduring Architecture at the AIA's 2010 National Architecture Awards.

This building is an exemplary, enduring piece of public architecture that makes a poised contribution to the city of Hobart. The plaza between the two court buildings opens up a diagonal landscape link between St Davids Park above, the adjacent Parliament Square and the Sullivans Cove waterfront.

From Salamanca Place a slate base folds up like a piece of carved landscape and supports two sandstone-clad pavilions. This is a building that is indebted to classicism but carries the burden of a period of architecture much maligned for its material brutality. The use of materials here is super direct and the detailing studious. Inside, the complex is judicially innovative through the planning of four courts in the round. The interior carries the gravity of the building’s function but is human in its detail and scale.

The complex is in remarkably original order because of the skill with which it was designed. Here is a reminder that investment in public architecture has a lasting effect on the city.

What makes this photo special is not what is but what almost was.

As for what is, this is CSXT Selkirk to Worcester manifest M436 hustling along just east of CP79 about to pass under the Mass Pike. They are following the Quaboag River valley along the former Boston and Albany mainline dating from way back in 1839 and still serving as the main east west freight route in and out of New England as modern day CSXT's Boston Sub.

This spot is unremarkable by any measure which may explain why in nearly 30 years exploring the area I'd never bothered to come here. What makes this interesting is the large concrete block visible behind the tree on the left side of the frame which is a part of what almost was.

That concrete block is a footing for what would have been a massive curved steel trestle over 1000 ft long and more than 100 feet in height spanning Boston Road, the Quaboag River, the B&A main, and Washington Road as it crossed from Palmer into Brimfield. This would have been the superlative piece of infrastructure on super railroad that was under construction between 1912 and 1916. Known as the Southern New England Railroad it was an 85 mile route linking the Central Vermont near Palmer with the deepwater port of Providence, RI on a 100% grade separated right of way. Financed by British interests at the urging of Grand Trunk Railway president Charles Melville Hayes it was conceived to break the stranglehold on New England commerce then held by the Morgan interests (New Haven and Boston and Maine railroads) and the Vanderbilt interests (the B&A by then a New York Central property). The story is a complex one and far too long for me to even summarize here, but for those who don't know this line had gained the moniker 'The Titanic Railroad.' While the scale of the project and bridges such as the one to have been built here may lead some to believe that was the origin of the name the the actual reason lies at the 12,000 ft beneath the Atlantic Ocean. GTR president CM Hayes was perished on board that doomed White Star line vessel when it sank to the bottom of the sea on April 12, 1912.

Despite the oft told tale, the railroad did not die with him and in fact the first construction didn't even commence until about a month after his death. Nonetheless with the loss of the railroad's leader who was the driving force behind the audacious plan, the project was never followed through to completion. Whether it would have if he'd lived is a matter of speculation to this day, though I doubt that even if it had been built access to the port would have not have made any difference in the Grand Trunk's ultimate failure that led to the road being taken over in 1923 by the government to become a part of the Canadian National Railway, a Crown corporation. The history of GTR and its many subsidiarys (particularly the Grand Trunk Pacific which arguably led to its demise) and its relationship with the government of Canada is a very complex subject worthy of more investigation.

If one knows where to look relics like this dot the landscape across south central Massachusetts as far as the Rhode Island state line account the road was fully graded with all concrete structures poured by 1916. But no steel was ever erected and not one foot of track was laid so what may have been is left to the imagination....

I'll leave you with two recent discoveries. One is that if you research historic USGS maps the one from 1915 shows this route in its entirety as if it had been completed and is a fascinating document to pore over if you're inclined to enjoy cartography.

The second is that I didn't realize until recently that the White Star Line was owned by J.P. Morgan at the time Titanic was built and that he was scheduled to be on her maiden voyage. It is interesting that his corporate rival in this last great New England railroad war perished on the great vessel he owned....

You never know what stories you might unearth in the woods if you just know where to look!
