The Heartlands Project is a community-led vision to transform 7.5ha of Cornwall’s most derelict industrial landscape into a truly inspirational cultural attraction.
LUC won an international competition to masterplan and design an imaginative mixed-use site that would become a catalyst for regeneration in the future. Working with a large multidisciplinary team, for the client Cornwall Council, our team delivered a project that referenced Cornwall’s history and the site’s heritage, making it a space that fosters convergence and reflection.
Our design aimed to capture the spirit of Cornwall, providing dynamic new spaces for the community and visitors to enjoy. The masterplan included places to relax in the Diaspora Gardens, an outdoor events space and surrounding parkland. We also created the largest free adventure playground in Cornwall, with play specialists Timberplay. Revelling in Cornish folklore, the playground includes custom-made wooden climbing structures, tunnels and a beach with diggers and a sand transportation system.
The development also encompassed the Grade II listed Robinson’s Shaft, which was restored to provide a gateway for the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site, artists’ studios and residential units.

FP drew the lines of this canoe model some 12 days ago. The hulls are joined by
a total of 6 cross-beams, one of which , slightly larger, is the supportive beam for the mast step.
The mast step is anchored onto that beam and secured by a lower deck lashed on

Road bridge named after famed walker
LAKELAND legend Alfred Wainwright, author of the million-selling guide books to the fells, has had a bridge named after him in his native town of Blackburn.
Favourite son: Although Alfred Wainwright spent much time in The Lakes, he was originally from Blackburn and the city remembers him
A naming ceremony for the Wainwright Bridge will take place next Friday when members of the society set up in his honour will be present.
Following a poll by readers of the Lancashire Telegraph, Wainwright polled almost half the total votes cast for the naming of Blackburn's landmark £10 million bridge due for completion this summer.
Council executives and councillors, along with Blackburn MP Jack Straw, put together a shortlist of seven famous names from Blackburn's past, and votes were cast by post and on the newspaper's website. Readers were also able to suggest their own favourite besides the list the paper drew up.
Wainwright Society spokesman John Burland said: “We applaud the readers for choosing AW.
“He was followed in the voting by author Josephine Cox, singer Kathleen Ferrier and former Blackburn Rovers owner Jack Walker. AW was, of course, born in Blackburn, and lived there for the first 33 years of his life. He founded Blackburn Rovers Supporters’ Club, which may have been a major factor in his topping the poll.”
Council leader Cohn Rigby said: “I am glad that so many people have voted and had a say in the naming of the bridge. It will be here for generations to come so it is only right that people of the borough have helped to decide what it should be called.'

The Gladesville Bridge recently turned 50, so I thought it would be nice to celebrate with a few photos.
At the time of completion on 2 October 1964, it was the largest single span concrete arch in the world. Joining Huntleys Point and Drummoyne across the Parramatta River, it provides a vital link from the north-west of Sydney through to the city. I use it every day.

All done, 18th June 2014. Apart from decorating the back loo and a fair bit of decorating. Oh and we need to grow a new lawn.
I had some friends saying they were coming over (unexpected) so I decided to cook something fast - but I had never tried this before. I had a pack ao Pork Country Style Ribs - I tossed them in my pressure cooker, with garlic, potatoes, onions, carrots, cooking sherry, white vinegar, two types of bar-b-que sauce, and a cup of water.
I cooked it for 25 minutes, vented the pressure off, seperated the meat and vegetables, strain the juicy stuff in a small pitcher for sauce - and there you go dinner.
The meat was falling off the bone and everything was cooked perfect and tasted great.
