Small of stature, quick and alert, disgustingly filthy, completely irascible and quite determined once a goal is set, gnolls are the expendables of evil forces in fantasy warfare.

We've seen the Gnoll Hunters * which leaves their only other useful function: thievery. Gnolls are not as good at robbing as they are at hunting. The lure of the object they are to steal does not hold as firm a lock on their attention as the scent of prey, and they can become distracted off to other matters. Also, Gnoll Robbers are most effective alone or in a pair. But, they are pack creatures and it is difficult to isolate them.

Those caveats aside, if you want an object you want, perhaps heavily guarded or in a hard-to-reach place, a Gnoll Robber that does remain focused is quite capable.

While a pack of gnolls can be dangerous to anyone, their lack of discipline, resolve, and focus results in gnolls rarely seen on the battlefield but useful in hunting and robbing.

This Great Horned Owl completely ignored me, looking in every direction except for where I stood - so no piercing stare into the camera.

At one point he seemed to spot something of interest in the distance. Clearly I had been dismissed.

Week 3/52

This week was anything but easy. Two robberies in the family, two hard dates to deal with and a whole lot of darkness left me completely devoid of inspiration for this week's shot. So I did what I usually do when I'm uninspired: I got my things and went up to the rooftop, armed with a dress, a set of jars and candles and my camera. I sat there for an hour and thought. I let everything run through my mind: how hopeless I am about the years to come, how I can't deal with the things I should be able to deal with, at this age. How much I miss him and how every day I want to talk to him. How my life changed this week and how I have to adjust. How I wish I had taken another 365, to keep my mind busy. How volunteering wasn't what I thought it would be. And then, at some point, things started to look better.

I started to think about the set of studio lights that I have on their way, about the summer days that are yet to come, about the road trips I'm starting to schedule. I started to remember good things; late-afternoons in the park, golden hours at that same rooftop. Afternoons of fun with friends, of pure joy and laughter, that I hope to find again sometime in the future.

The light came to me again, and I found myself smiling and getting ready for this shot. Because, if you look carefully, it's all about light. It's all about the candles you light and how you nurture them and keep them alive. It's all about keeping your happiness close to you. And even when that source of happiness can't be close to you, even when you're not strong enough yet to look at that flame, you know that it's still there, and that if you're meant to be connected to that source, sometime, you will be. You just have to take one day at a time and deal with things as they come.

One day at a time, right? And a smile on your face. :)

ETA: One of the textures I used was Pareeerica's, the other two are of my own making. Still, I had forgotten to credit the maker! :)

I completely forgot existence of this observation deck. It is several years since having come last. It was suggested that I photograph the Shinkansen here by a friend, but, in the case of my photography method, it is necessary for the Shinkansen to stop here for several seconds.

It was still a winter season, but please clear up well on this day.

Since doing in winter, it was warm.

I feel like judging a town in Tokyo from Aquatic, and, the evening

I take the sightseeing boat which is so, and it's about only one hour, but two.

I took Sumida river cruise of a degree eye.

That it's seen from Aquatic, a viewpoint completely changes again, and, interest

The deep landscape is developing the taste one after another, and, time, in an instant,

GI, but, this scenic interest isn't simply.

It's a condition!

Ngl, I completely forgot I had this, and a bunch of others, hence the massive gap between this and the blood teller. So, like last time, let's get into the story:

'Be wary, dear traveller, of he who can raise the dead. He goes by many names. King of the Risen, the Black King, The Eternal howling, but most refer to him as the Risen King. Once thought to be a legend, the Risen King travels the land, followed by his legion of the dead, his loyal followers, deadly in battle and with unimaginable strength.

It is said that he was once a mortal man, a King of a faraway land centuries ago. He was a fair and noble leader, until he found...the rock. The rock, emanating a mysterious purple glow, caused a change in the King, he became obsessed with escaping death. Though the nature of the rock is unknown, it is said that he carried it around with him for the rest of his days, and when he did inevitably die, he was buried with it.

His son succeeded him as ruler, and the country carried on. Until ten years after his death, the royal tomb cracked open, a purple fog flowing from it. Any caught in the fog were killed instantly. But not for long. Within a week, the city was overwhelmed, within a month the land itself. A message was soon sent to the then King of our country, a dire warning:

'All within this land are claimed by the Risen King'

No cry for help, just a simple statement. It is not known who sent that message, if they were living or...dead. With that, the decision was taken to scorch the Risen Kings kingdom, burning the Legions of the dead away, until the land was left barren, inhospitable to life, as well as the dead.

But he survived. Washed up on the shore of our lands, Seen by no one, he disappeared, roaming the land, claiming the dead of our country as his legion. His Army. Be wary traveller, of the Risen King and his legion of lost souls.'

And that's the story of the Risen King, told as a ghost story, but treated as fact. As always, please lemme know what you think :D

This Ensign Wasp in the family Evaniidae was filmed in the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador. The black abdomen (metasoma) moves up and down as if signalling with a flag, which gave rise to the common name ensign wasp. They are completely harmless to humans and actually are beneficial since they lay an egg in the egg cases of cockroaches and the hatched wasp larva feeds on the roach eggs.

The trick with exploring is that you never start out somewhere completely unexplored. It takes patience and dedication to take the time to orient one's self with the landscape they find themselves within, to follow the footsteps of those that ventured before them and use that path as a temporary guide, leading them deeper and deeper toward new territory, until finally - hopefully - you arrive at a place where there are no more footsteps preceding your own and each step you take is on fresh ground. To turn around before this point and exclaim, "look what I have found!" is a bit of a silly notion as that has already been found by someone else. Then again, the discovery of new lands does not always have to be one's goal either, you can be perfectly content getting off the beaten path onto a slightly less beaten path and calling that good. But if true exploration is your goal, then I can say that these things take time, they take determination, they take patience. It requires you to be willing to walk through and past all that land that has been explored and documented by others before you. And yes, you will make photos and those photos will be very similar in technique to ones already made and this is ok too. This is part of exploring, just realize that there is more waiting to be discovered yet and ask yourself if you are willing to push on til you get there.

And that is how I feel about using photographic techniques such as this method of double exposing. It is a fun thing to explore, and many in addition to I have explored it. That means my initial explorations are going to look just like many other initial explorations. And that is ok. It is to be expected. It is part of the process. The question then is not, Is there more to find? The question is, Will I stick with it long enough to find what else is out there that this technique could allow me to create?

Completely messed the setting up on this one but converting it to B/W has saved it.

I have somewhat evolved in my reticence towards HDR, in fact I think if its done well (and the jury is still out for me on this image!) - I think it can evoke a completely different mood. I have shot Secret Beach in Makena dozens of times, this is my second HDR attempt.

A shot taken at Sutton Harbour in Plymouth back in April on a gorgeous still morning. There was absolutely no wind which helped give near perfect reflections in the harbour.

I had completely forgotten about this shot until the other day when I saw Digital Camera World doing a little Facebook competition on the theme of Reflections, I added this shot to the comments section and it has now been selected for possible future publication in the magazine, which is nice!

I'm sure you're all excited now.

I completely screwed up focus in this one, but the colors are just unbelievable, coming from a film expired more than 20 years ago.

Completely improvised. Made plenty mistakes.

The Fallas of Valencia (Falles in Valencian) are festivals that go from the 14th (children's plant) to the 19th (cremà) of March with a tradition rooted in the Spanish city of Valencia. They officially begin on the last Sunday of February with the act of the crida (in Valencian; 'pregón or call', in Spanish).

Currently, this holiday has become a very important tourist attraction, since in addition to being classified as a festival of International Tourist Interest, in November 2016 UNESCO inscribed them on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. These festivals are also called Josefin festivals or feasts of San José, since they are celebrated in honor of St. Joseph, patron saint of carpenters, who was a very widespread guild in the city when they began to be held at the end of the nineteenth century, and which has preserved until today, given the importance of the furniture industry in the region.

A falla, or Fallas monument, is an artistic, satirical, and ephemeral work of art, generally of large dimensions (between three and twenty meters high, although they can be larger) with figures called ninots surrounding one or more central figures (called remates) that are placed in the streets during the Valencian (Spain) Fallas festival. The monument generally has a motto and is covered with posters with verses, phrases, and humorous slogans. The monument is constructed of combustible materials (cardboard, wood, paper, fabric, expanded polystyrene, etc.) so that, after a few days of exposure in the streets, it can be completely burned.

I've become the first Portuguese photographer to win TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR!!! I'm completely stoked by this truly amazing news. It's immensely positive to see our work/passion to be internationally recognized by one of the world's most global and prestigious photography awards — the Travel Photographer of the Year. Thanks to #tpoty and to everyone whom helped me along the way, from family to friends, all over the world. Congratulations to all the other category winning photographers and all the extremely talented participants. WHAT THE JUDGES THOUGHT — "Joel's two portfolios - entered in the Land Sea Sky and Journeys & Adventures categories - exhibit a remarkable diversity in subject, technique and feel. The first portfolio, shot in Ethiopia's Danakil Depression, is the first winner to be shot using a drone-mounted camera, giving us a different perspective on this dramatic landscape and revealing dramatic detail which wouldn't be visible at ground level. The second portfolio is a sensitive and intimate insight into the life of a Ghanaian fisherman on Lake Bosumtwi. In dull weather conditions these subtle images create beautiful shapes against the light, balancing detail in lowlights and highlights without the need to overlighten the all important shadow areas of the image which give it depth." You can see all winning images from every category in TPOTY 2016 in the winners' gallery at ift.tt/2gL5MVN

OK.. something completely different! Shot in Budapest in 2018 (I think) with model Lily. I stayed in the amazing apartment complex so shot a roll using the location. I think I prefer B&W film.. too much going on in the image but different for a change.

It's strange how it can be really blowing in one place and completely still not that far away. That's how it was today. It was really windy at my house, but the weather was perfect down the coast in Irvine. Nice still waters for this Grebe to pop up for a full-frame shot.
