PREFACE.
I hardly believe that anyone who has not had the actual experience will appreciate the labor of this work. Days, yea weeks, of mental exertion and anxiety have been necessary for its compilation. For nearly 30 years I have been in the newspaper field, and thought I knew all the ins and outs of the business, but this book has convinced me otherwise. There is much I do not know in printing, and I do not care for further experimenting.
However, I am proud of the work and believe the people of Byesville will be proud with me.
I have used every available means, and have spared neither money nor brains in trying to make it a credit to myself and worthy the community it represents. In the former I have been successful, in the latter, I must leave the people to judge. From a financial standpoint it is a loss to me, but I hope and believe the town will regain my losses an hundred fold. If so I am satisfied with the effort.
True the work is not complete. I have done everything reasonable to give a complete panorama of the town, and now that it is finished I do not believe that anyone would have been more successful. People generally have entered into the work with a surprising willingness for which they have my sincere thanks, and while there are some business houses not represented, you will find, I think, fully 9o per cent of them in these pages, which all must admit is an unusually large representation in a work of this kind.
With my best wishes for the little work and the people it represents, I respectfully dedicate it to the “People of Byesville.”

Seo Hyun-jin debuted as the lead vocalist of K-pop girl group M.I.L.K in 2001. However, the girl group soon fell by the wayside due to fierce competition among manufactured bands, which led to one of the members quitting before the outfit completely disbanded in 2003.
After M.I.L.K. was dissolved, Seo attended Dongduk Women's University, where she majored in applied music to keep her dream of a career in singing alive. As a solo artist she contributed songs to a few soundtracks and SM Town compilations. When she got a chance to perform in her first musical, The Sound of Music, in 2006, she saw it as a turning point to begin her acting career. Besides joining more theatrical productions, Seo shot a movie and a short drama with boyband DBSK (at the time she and the group were under the agency SM Entertainment).
Supporting roles followed in the TV police procedural H.I.T (2007) and queer film Ashamed (also known as Life Is Peachy, 2011), though Seo got noticed for her subtler performances in period dramas such as Hwang Jini (2006), particularly her career-making performance in The Duo (2011) as a neighborhood tomboy who later becomes a gisaeng. She played her first villain in Feast of the Gods (2012), as an overly ambitious chef caught in a rivalry. Seo was then cast in more leading roles in the period dramas The King's Daughter, Soo Baek-hyang (2013) and The Three Musketeers (2014). But she said the character that most resembled her real-life personality was the foodie freelance writer in Let's Eat 2 (2015), adding that she "didn't realize how much fun shooting a lively and comical drama could be.
Seo has also frequently appeared in projects directed by her best friend, actress Ku Hye-sun, notably short film The Madonna and the feature film Magic, in which she had her first leading role.
