Compatibility: Discus are a very peaceful fish and should be kept with other peaceful fish like some of the S. American dwarf cichlid species and tetras. They do best when kept as a group of 6 or more.
Temperature: 82 – 88 Deg F / 28 – 30 Deg C
Water Chemistry: Juvenile and wild F1 Discus generally require softer water and a lower pH than tank raised Discus. The best thing is to simulate the conditions your Discus were raised in. Wild Discus require pH 6.0 – 6.5 while tank raised Discus can go all the way up to 8.0 pH.
Feeding: When purchasing, always ask what they are being fed. Discus can be quite particular when it comes to food, but can be trained to readily accept almost any type of food. Tank mates that eat the food that you want them to eat will encourage Discus to eat it also. They WILL eat a broad range of foods from flakes, small pellets, frozen, and live worms along with brine shrimp, but not always on the first attempt. DO NOT feed them tubifex worms. Tubifex carries too many pathogens and the risk of introducing disease to your Discus is too great a risk. Hole-in-the-head disease (HITH) is associated with poor water quality and feeding tubifex.
Sexing: Venting is the best way to sex Discus.
Breeding: Discus will lay their eggs on broad leaved plants like Amazon Swords or almost any vertical flat surface that is to their liking. Fry are best kept with the parents as they will eat the slime that the parents secrete. At two weeks of age they will start to accept finely ground flake food or baby brine shrimp.
Additional Information: There are almost too may different color variations of Discus with new ones coming out all the time. They are not difficult to keep as long as water parameters and temperature are to their liking. They can be a shy fish, because of this the aquarium should not be placed in high traffic areas where people are always walking by. A novice fish keeper will have better success with Discus that are larger than 3 inches in size.
Pigeon Blood Discus are a selectively bred or man-made species of Discus that typically have a creamy yellowish to orange base color, highlighted by bright red eyes and trimmed off in black stripes and spots. The tails of Pigeon Blood Discus are almost always black. Some of the varieties of this strain have more or less striations or black spotting with more cream colored body coloring. This strain was developed by Kitti Phanaitthi in 1991 from a mutation in Thailand. Some breeders have noted that if you can grow young Pigeon Blood Discus in a brightly lit aquarium, that there should be less black spots or peppering on both the body and finnage.

I have bought myself a new camera body (Canon R7) to fit by 70-300 lens. So today went to Arne RSPB reserve for a lesson. The lens is not totally compatible so had to buy a connecting ring as well, so far it seems there is only 1 feature lacking & that is a compatibility issue.
Not many birds around so a variety of subjects trying to get my head around the difference between new & old camera body.

Nadat de nieuwe TGV M (Avelia Horizon van Alstom) op vrijdag 23 januari vanuit Ronet overgebracht werd naar de HST werkplaats in Vorst en daar in de eerste plaats een reeks statische testen onderging, was het vanaf maandag 9 februari dan tijd voor het echte werk met de elektromagnetische compatibiliteitstesten op L94 in de buurt van Ath.
Ik polste even bij mijn bronnen of de TGV M na de overbrenging vanuit Vorst in de voormiddag überhaupt nog getest zou worden in de namiddag... Tot groot jolijt was dat wel het geval en met het positieve antwoord op zak trok ik dus richting Le Coucou. En nog beter: hoe meer ik vanuit mijn thuisstad richting Ath reed, hoe meer de bewolking openbrak. Ik hoopte dus al stiekem op een zonnige foto. En ja hoor, ter hoogte van de Base de Coucou deed het stel vrolijk zijn testritjes... nu eens onder de wolken, dan weer met een flauw zonnetje en een keertje zelfs met volle zon!
Dat gaf de burger moed en dus trok ik na een goede 45 minuten verder naar Arbre. De TGV M zou namelijk eerst even (zelfstandig) naar Ath rijden om van daaruit dan terug overgebracht te worden naar de Base de Coucou waar het stel overnacht. En zo zien jullie de splinternieuwe TGV M dan ook in de mooie bocht van Arbre onder een heerlijk zonnetje. Missie meer dan geslaagd!

After the new TGV M (Avelia Horizon by Alstom) was transferred from Ronet to the HST workshop in Vorst on Friday 23 January and initially underwent a series of static tests, it was time for the real work as from Monday 9 February with the electromagnetic compatibility tests on L94 near Ath.
I checked with my sources whether the TGV M would be tested at all in the afternoon after the transfer from Vorst in the morning... To my great delight, it was, and with the positive answer in hand, I headed for Le Coucou. And even better: the further I drove from my hometown towards Ath, the more the clouds broke. So I secretly hoped for a sunny photo. And sure enough, near the Base de Coucou, the train was happily doing its test runs... sometimes under the clouds, sometimes with a faint sun, and once even in full sun!
That gave the citizen courage, so after a good 45 minutes I continued on to Arbre. The TGV M would first travel (independently) to Ath and then be transferred back to the Base de Coucou where the train would spend the night. And so you see the brand-new TGV M on the beautiful bend of Arbre under a glorious sun. Mission more than accomplished!

Mika, who had come from Japan to study at St. Clair State University, found herself deeply drawn to Ana’s work in the art department. Her pieces were composed only of black and white—pencil, mechanical pencil, ballpoint pen, fountain pen—everyday tools of the hand. Each portrait, landscape, and still life, stripped of color, appeared fresh to Mika, who was accustomed to oil paintings overflowing with pigment. They carried a certain austerity, a clear, ringing resonance. Within that colorless world, Ana’s gaze unmistakably breathed.
And yet, even as the campus basked in warm sunlight, there were fractures no one could ignore. Posters taped to the university walls were torn down, replaced, then scrawled over. Across the slogan proclaiming “Freedom and Diversity” ran the words “Go home” and “Don’t steal our scholarships,” smeared under fluorescent light. The walls, worn and frayed, looked like scraped skin.
That roughness was the very face of America. Even Harvard was denounced as “privileged” and “biased,” and dragged into congressional hearings. Under the Republican administration, ICE intensified its checks on students and immigrants, while ERO raids and detentions became commonplace. On television, politicians turned elites, immigrants, and universities into a single enemy, and their words spread like a heatwave across the nation, scorching even small-town campuses. Academic freedom still held its shape, but it was already as precarious as a mirage shimmering in the desert.
At a window seat in the dining hall, Ana pushed at the yolk of her ham and eggs with her fork.
— The town where I grew up was barren. No trees, no river, only dry sand swirling in the wind. But I didn’t dislike it.
Her voice was quiet, yet her fingers carried a distinct aftertone.
— Not only the landscape. In truth, there was nothing at all around me. Nothing but paper and a pencil.
Her words seemed to echo the emptiness pressing on the university itself. American scholarship, however abundant it appeared, was being scoured by politics and policy, left dry like the desert wind.
Mika nodded deeply. She too, as a Japanese, knew the contrast between landscape and emptiness. Shibuya’s dazzling ads and giant screens blazed so bright they drowned the night sky. Yet the neighborhood where she lived, Kamiyamachō, was lined with old houses, hushed and still, as if time had forgotten them. Excessive light and silence’s darkness—this disparity had shaped her childhood, and now it resonated with Ana’s words in the deepest chamber of her heart.
On the library desk lay Ana’s black-and-white lines beside the fragments of color Mika brought. Pencil shavings and the scent of paint were proof of life, yet behind them lurked newspaper headlines like shadows: Scholarship Reform, Tighter Surveillance of Immigrant Students. The library’s hush still held, but its silence was taut, like the surface of a lake just before a storm.
— The glamorous lives I saw on social media seemed so rich. But I never felt envy. Rather, I wanted to show someone my own ordinary days.
Ana’s voice was small, but burning. To offer up her modest daily life amid division—this was resistance, the last fragile shape of freedom that scholarship could still claim.
At dusk, as they sat on the grass, the laughter of distant students drifted on the wind. Yet even that sound was drowned by the echo of news calling for stronger borders, and dissolved into the dry night air. The two of them opened their sketchbooks and drew lines on paper, affirming, with each stroke, that they were here, alive.
Before long the sun went down, and the streetlamps lit one by one. The humid summer air stirred their hair. In its tremor, she felt the mingling of exhilaration and unease.

サンクレア州立大学に日本からやってきたミカは、同じ美術学部に在籍していたアナの、白と黒だけで構成された作品に強く惹かれていた。鉛筆やシャープペンシル、ボールペン、万年筆──日常の手道具だけで描かれた人物や風景、静物のひとつひとつが、色彩豊かな油絵に慣れたミカには新鮮で、どこか凛とした響きをもって映った。色を奪った世界のなかに、アナの眼差しが確かに息づいていたのだ。
だがキャンパスの空気は、暖かな陽光に包まれていながらも、目に見えぬ亀裂を抱えていた。大学の壁に貼られたポスターは剥がされ、貼り直され、やがて落書きに塗りつぶされる。「自由と多様性」のスローガンの上から殴り書きされた「帰れ」「奨学金を奪うな」の文字が蛍光灯ににじみ、壁は擦り切れた皮膚のように荒れていた。
そのざらつきは、アメリカそのものの表情だった。ハーバード大学でさえ「特権的」「偏向的」と糾弾され、議会の標的となる時代だ。共和党政権下ではICEが留学生や移民の身元確認を強化し、EROが通報や拘束を実行する光景が日常化していた。政治家たちはテレビカメラの前で、エリートや移民や大学をひとつの敵に仕立て上げ、その言葉は熱波となって国中に広がり、地方の小さなキャンパスをも焼いていた。学問の自由はまだ形を保っていたが、それはすでに砂漠に浮かぶ蜃気楼のように危うかった。
食堂の窓際で、アナはプレートのハムエッグの黄身を小さく突きながら言った。
ーー わたしが育った街は、殺風景だった。緑も川もなく、乾いた砂が風に舞うばかり。でも、嫌いではなかった ーー
その声は静かで、しかし指先の動きに確かな残響を宿していた。
ーー 風景だけでなく、実際、まわりには何もなかった。あったのは、紙と鉛筆くらい ーー
その響きは、大学という場が直面している空虚さをも思わせた。豊かに見えるアメリカの学問も、制度と政治の風にさらされ、砂漠のように乾いていた。
ミカは深く頷いた。日本人である彼女もまた風景と空虚の対比を知っていたからだ。渋谷の艶やかな広告や巨大スクリーンは眩しすぎて、夜空をかき消すほどだった。一方、自宅のあった神山町は、古風な邸宅がひっそりと並ぶ、時間に取り残されたかのような街並みだった。過剰な光と沈黙の闇。その落差が、幼い日のミカを支え、今アナの言葉を胸の奥で共鳴させていた。
図書館の机には、アナの黒と白の線と、ミカの持ち込む色彩の断片が並んでいた。鉛筆の削りかすや絵具の匂いは確かに生の証だったが、その背後には新聞の見出しが影のように迫っていた。「奨学金の見直し」「移民学生への監視強化」。図書館の静謐はまだ保たれていたが、その沈黙は嵐を前にした湖面のように張りつめていた。
ーー SNSで目にする誰かの華やかな生活は、とても豊かに見えた。でも、羨ましいとは思わなかった。むしろ、私の日常を、誰かに見せたくて仕方がなかった ーー
アナの声はとても小さかったが熱していた。分断のただ中で差し出す自分の小さな日常、それはひとつの抵抗であり、学問が残す最後の自由のかたちだった。
夕暮れ、芝生に腰を下ろすと、遠くの学生たちの笑い声が風に運ばれてきた。だがその響きも、国境の強化を叫ぶニュースの残響にかき消され、乾いた夜風に溶けていった。ふたりはただスケッチブックを広げ、紙に線を刻むことで、ここに生きていることを確かめ合った。
やがて夕陽が沈み、街灯がひとつ、またひとつと灯り始めた。夏の湿った風が髪を揺らし、昂ぶりと不安が交錯するのを、彼女は確かに感じていた。
